Book excerpt: Puritan Richard Baxter explains many of the reasons that one develops a melancholy or depressed frame of mind. He pays particular attention to when sorrow becomes unhealthy and what are the warning signs. He explains causes such as diseases of the body, sinful discontents, guilt of sin and mistakes in thinking. He explains cures of melancholy and gives many of his own counsels. He explores the topic of taking care of a melancholy person. This puritan sermon is from the "Morning Exercise at Cripplegate" series. This edition includes an outline of the sermon and a biographical sketch of Richard Baxter. The sermon is also called "The Cure of Melancholy and Overmuch Sorrow."Richard Baxter (1615-1691) was born at Rowton in Shropshire, England. He had little formal education but studied on his own. He spent most of his ministry at St. Mary and All Saints Church at Kidderminster. He was a leader of the Nonconformists at the Savoy Conference. He spent time in jail for his puritan views. He was a prodigious writer. His most famous works are "Call to the Unconverted," "The Saints Everlasting Rest" and "The Reformed Pastor."

Before then a wide range of terms were used: ‘melancholy’ carried enormous weight, and was one of the two confirmed forms of eighteenth-century insanity. This four-volume set is the first large-scale study of depression across an extensive period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking work of first-order scholarship, Eric Johnson makes a vitally important contribution to the field of Christian counseling. He first presents a detailed overview and appreciative but critical evaluation of the reigning paradigms in the field of Christian counseling, particularly biblical counseling and integration. Building on their respective strengths, he seeks to move beyond the current impasse in the field and develop a more unified and robustly Christian understanding. Drawing upon the Bible and various Christian intellectual and soul care traditions, and through a Christian reinterpretation of relevant modern psychological theory and research, Johnson proceeds to offer a new framework for the care of souls that is comprehensive in scope, yet flows from a Christian understanding of human beings--what amounts to a distinctly Christian version of psychology. This book is a must-read for any serious Christian teacher, student, or practitioner in the fields of psychology or counseling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emotional Excess on the Shakespearean Stage demonstrates the links made between excess of emotion and madness in the early modern period. It argues that the ways in which today's popular and theatrical cultures judge how much is too much can distort our understanding of early modern drama and theatre. It argues that permitting the excesses of the early modern drama onto the contemporary stage might free actors and audiences alike from assumptions that in order to engage with the drama of the past, its characters must be just like us. The book deals with characters in the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries who are sad for too long, or angry to the point of irrationality; people who laugh when they shouldn't or make their audiences do so; people whose selfhood has broken down into an excess of fragmentary extremes and who are labelled mad. It is about moments in the theatre when excessive emotion is rewarded and applauded - and about moments when the expression of emotion is in excess of what is socially acceptable: embarrassing, shameful, unsettling or insane. The book explores the broader cultures of emotion that produce these theatrical moments, and the theatre's role in regulating and extending the acceptable expression of emotion. It is concerned with the acting of excessive emotion and with acting emotion excessively. And it asks how these excesses are produced or erased, give pleasure or pain, in versions of early modern drama in theatre, film and television today. Plays discussed include Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, The Spanish Tragedy, Twelfth Night, Much Ado About Nothing, Measure for Measure, and Coriolanus.

Lundy and theologian J. I. Packer present Baxter's writings in order to comfort, instruct, and strengthen all who struggle with depression.

In Developments in Biblical Counseling , J. Cameron Fraser turns a journalistic eye to this question and presents a concise assessment. Introducing us to the formative work of Jay Adams, Fraser outlines several themes of biblical counseling that became foundational for the movement as a whole and observes how the movement received criticisms from outside and made necessary developments from within. He points out that some of these developments have an affinity with Puritan approaches to counseling that Adams rejects but may point in a more consistently biblical direction. Table of Contents: 1. Some Foundational Views of Nouthetic Counseling 2. Some Criticisms of Nouthetic Counseling 3. Some Developments in Biblical Counseling 4. Biblical and Puritan Counseling
