Book excerpt: America’s leading religious scholar and public intellectual introduces lay readers to the Qur’an with a measured, powerful reading of the ancient text Garry Wills has spent a lifetime thinking and writing about Christianity. In What the Qur’an Meant, Wills invites readers to join him as he embarks on a timely and necessary reconsideration of the Qur’an, leading us through perplexing passages with insight and erudition. What does the Qur’an actually say about veiling women? Does it justify religious war? There was a time when ordinary Americans did not have to know much about Islam. That is no longer the case. We blundered into the longest war in our history without knowing basic facts about the Islamic civilization with which we were dealing. We are constantly fed false information about Islam—claims that it is essentially a religion of violence, that its sacred book is a handbook for terrorists. There is no way to assess these claims unless we have at least some knowledge of the Qur’an. In this book Wills, as a non-Muslim with an open mind, reads the Qur’an with sympathy but with rigor, trying to discover why other non-Muslims—such as Pope Francis—find it an inspiring book, worthy to guide people down through the centuries. There are many traditions that add to and distort and blunt the actual words of the text. What Wills does resembles the work of art restorers who clean away accumulated layers of dust to find the original meaning. He compares the Qur’an with other sacred books, the Old Testament and the New Testament, to show many parallels between them. There are also parallel difficulties of interpretation, which call for patient exploration—and which offer some thrills of discovery. What the Qur’an Meant is the opening of a conversation on one of the world’s most practiced religions.

Book excerpt: Part I: Disproving Religious Authority: Disproving the religious system which manifests in those who claimed guardianship and superiority in the name of Allah- those who held power after the prophets and messengers in what has come to be known as the Islamic Caliphate or Imamate- in the legitimacy of these regimes, in the principles of obedience and subjugation, in the legitimacy of judging and punishing the other in the name of Allah, and in establishing theocracies and religious guardianship. Part II: Refuting Jihad (holy wars): Taking apart the legitimacy of jihad (holy wars against nonbelievers), invasions and conquests; of usurping the assets of the other; of entitling oneself to his blood, money and honor; and of the captivity, defeat, humiliation and domination that come together with these crimes in the name of Allah and for the sake of Allah as being claimed. Part III: Refuting Inherited Religious Beliefs: Bringing down all the so-called heavenly religions with all the details they comprise, and proving they are man-made religions, even if they were constructed from a sublime source over hundreds of years. I describe these religions as trees of evil cultivated between people with lies together with falsehood and irrigated with grudges and blood, trees which bore fruit to hatred, elimination and enmity, and which proliferated into many sects, schools and groups, and it is about time they are plucked out once and for all; as there is no legitimacy for jihad except in the days of the Apostles, revelation and Divine supervision over the matter. (There is no a binding divine religion except in the life of the Apostles and revelation, and God then assigned it only to a certain group of people). By bringing down this authority, system and legitimacy, we are also bringing down the illusions that overwhelm the minds of believers in Abrahamic religions in particular (Jews, Christians and Muslims) together with the inherited obligations, traditions, judgments, liberties and beliefs that they circulate among themselves and propagate to others. Such beliefs resulted in enmity, hatred and fighting for thousands of years, fighting that still continues to this very day in the name of God and for the sake of God. We will prove the falsehood of all this using only one source, the holy Quran. Part IV: God Wills: We will tackle here the subject of the creation of human beings since Adam and until the end of creation, and we will do this for the purpose of familiarizing ourselves with what God expects from humanity.

This book is written for the Muslim reader to consider various aspects of his/her religion as found in the Qur'an and other traditional texts and cultural norms and compare them to what Jesus brings as found in the Bible and Christian history. Book excerpt: Any divide between revelation and rationality, religion and logic has to be irrational. If religion and rationality cannot proceed hand in hand, there has to be something deeply wrong with either of the two. Does revelation play any vital role in human affairs? Is not rationality sufficient to guide man in all the problems which confront him? Numerous questions such as these are examined with minute attention. All major issues which intrigue the modern mind are attempted to be incorporated in this fascinatingly comprehensive statute. Whatever the intellectual or educational background of the reader, this book is bound to offer him something of his interest. It examines a very diverse and wide range of subjects including the concept of revelation in different religions, history of philosophy, cosmology, extraterrestrial life, the future of life on earth, natural selection and its role in evolution. It also elaborately discusses the advent of the Messiah, or other universal reformers, awaited by different religions. Likewise, many other topical issues which have been agitating the human mind since time immemorial are also incorporated. The main emphasis is on the ability of the Quran to correctly discuss all important events of the past, present and future from the beginning of the universe to its ultimate end. Aided by strong incontrovertible logic and scientific evidence, the Quran does not shy away from presenting itself to the merciless scrutiny of rationality. It will be hard to find a reader whose queries are not satisfactorily answered. We hope that most readers will testify that this will always stand out as a book among books – perhaps the greatest literary achievement of this century.

Book excerpt: Over 4 years in the making, Bleeding for Allah scrutinizes Islam from the very birth of the religion. The Koran, the Holy Book of more than one billion people worldwide, is systematically analyzed to reflect the true nature of its message. Bleeding for Allah goes the full distance in detailing the uncomfortable and painful truth of that message. Although touted as a peaceful religion and Islamic terrorists dismissed as misguided fanatics, it is clear that the very words of Allah, as voiced through the Archangel Gabriel to the Prophet Muhammad, are anything but peaceful. Markus Aurelius, in concise and clear fashion, gives countless examples of Koranic verse that readily demonstrates its militancy and violence. The author speaks to cultural bias and is quite sensitive to its influence on interpretation. But the author finds it extremely difficult to dismiss countless holy verse such as: Believers, take neither the Jews nor the Christians for your friends. (Koran, 5:51) or: Prophet, make war on the unbelievers and the hypocrites, and deal sternly with them. (Koran, 66:9). To further try to eliminate cultural bias, the book includes a comparative analysis of specific words between the New Testament and the Koran. For example, the words punishment and torture appear 600% more in the Koran while the word love appears 500% less. The author carefully examines the Prophet Muhammads life and outlines the gruesome details of his explosive success in the 7th century. The shrewd Prophet creatively found divine support from Allah for his banditry and mass murder. Sadly, more than one billion people believe those words today. Americans are woefully in the dark regarding the Koran. But few Americans have taken the time to read the Koran itself. Markus Aurelius challenges the American public to do just that. Bleeding for Allah is the perfect primer.

What emerges is a highly informative look at the religious, political, and social spheres of the modern Islamic world. Naturally, readers will find many entries on topics of intense current interest, such as terrorism and the Taliban, Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida, the PLO and HAMAS. But the coverage goes well beyond recent headlines. There are biographical profiles, ranging from Naguib Mahfouz (the Nobel Prize winner from Egypt) to Malcolm X, including political leaders, influential thinkers, poets, scientists, and writers. Other entries cover major political movements, militant groups, and religious sects as well as terms from Islamic law, culture, and religion, key historical events, and important landmarks (such as Mecca and Medina). A series of entries looks at Islam in individual nations, such as Afghanistan, the West Bank and Gaza, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and the United States, and the
