Book excerpt: West Virginia's wood products manufacturing industry employs 9,400 workers with an output of more than $2.0 billion (NAICS 321-Wood product manufacturing, and NAICS 322-Paper manufacturing) (U.S. Census Bureau 2007). Given the economic importance of West Virginia's wood industry, the purpose of this bulletin is to analyze recent forest industry trends in the State and report the results of a detailed study of West Virginia's forest industry, industrial roundwood production, and associated primary mill wood and bark residue in 2007. Such detailed information is necessary for intelligent planning and decisionmaking in wood procurement, economic research, forest resources management, and forest industry development. Likewise, researchers need current forest industry and industrial roundwood information for planning projects.

Download or read book Introduction to Forestry and Natural Resources written by Donald L. Grebner and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-31 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Forestry and Natural Resources presents a broad overview of the profession of forestry. The book details several key fields within forestry, including forest health, economics, policy, utilization, and forestry careers. Chapters deal specifically with forest products and harvesting, recreation, wildlife habitats, tree anatomy and physiology, and ethics. These topics are ideal for undergraduate introductory courses and include numerous examples (mainly graphical) and questions for students to ponder. Unlike other introductory forestry texts, which focus largely on forest ecology rather than practical forestry concepts, Introduction to Forestry and Natural Resources encompasses economic, ecological, and social aspects providing a uniquely balanced text. The wide range of experience of the contributing authors equips them especially well to identify missing content from other texts in the area and address topics currently covered in corresponding college courses. 300 original illustrations including line art, graphs, tables and maps Syllabus-planning assistance for adopting professors so that they can add the content to their course materials via the companion website's question-and-answer material for each chapter Contributors are experienced textbook authors with diverse professional backgrounds in forestry
Book Synopsis Handbook of Forest Resource Economics by : Shashi Kant
Download or read book Handbook of Forest Resource Economics written by Shashi Kant and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-03 with total page 825 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is increasingly recognized that the economic value of forests is not merely the production of timber. Forests provide other key ecosystem services, such as being sinks for greenhouse gases, hotspots of biodiversity, tourism and recreation. They are also vitally important in preventing soil erosion and controlling water supplies, as well as providing non-timber forest products and supporting the livelihoods of many local people. This handbook provides a detailed, comprehensive and broad coverage of forest economics, including traditional forest economics of timber production, economics of environmental role of forests, and recent developments in forest economics. The chapters are grouped into six parts: fundamental topics in forest resource economics; economics of forest ecosystems; economics of forests, climate change, and bioenergy; economics of risk, uncertainty, and natural disturbances; economics of forest property rights and certification; and emerging issues and developments. Written by leading environmental, forest, and natural resource economists, the book represents a definitive reference volume for students of economics, environment, forestry and natural resource economics and management.
Book Synopsis Renewable Energy from Forest Resources in the United States by : Barry Solomon
Download or read book Renewable Energy from Forest Resources in the United States written by Barry Solomon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-10-30 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in biomass energy resources from forests, farms and other sources has been rapidly increasing in recent years because of growing concern with reducing carbon dioxide emissions and developing alternatives to increasingly scarce, expensive and insecure oil supplies. The uniqueness of this book is its coverage of biomass energy markets in the US from an economic as well as technical perspective. Existing books typically focus on single markets or technical aspects at the exclusion of economics, and have given greater coverage to biomass energy outside the US. This edited collection has three main parts. Part One provides a historical overview of forest biomass energy use in the US; the major technologies, economics, market prospects, and policies. Part Two presents forest biomass energy assessments, including life cycle and sustainability perspectives, and Part Three includes five sets of regional case studies. After reviewing the history of wood energy use in the US and technology options, the book shows that forests could displace sixteen per cent of domestic transportation fuel use in 2030. Renewable Energy from Forest Resources in the United States includes a Foreword from Chris Flavin, President of the Worldwatch Institute.

Book Synopsis Reptile, Amphibian, and Small Mammal Species Associated with Natural Gas Development in the Monongahela National Forest, West Virginia by :
Download or read book Reptile, Amphibian, and Small Mammal Species Associated with Natural Gas Development in the Monongahela National Forest, West Virginia written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Burgeoning energy in the United States has led to increased natural gas exploration in the Appalachian Basin. Despite increasing natural gas development in the region, data about its impacts to wildlife are lacking. Our objective was to assess past and ongoing natural gas development impacts on reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals in the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia. We sampled 40 gas well sites and compared amphibian, reptile, and small mammal captures among active producing, plugged (inactive), and storage well types. Total species richness and diversity were greater at storage gas well sites than at plugged wells. Although natural gas development adversely impacts moisture-sensitive woodland salamanders, our results suggest that maintained gas well openings may benefit other herpetofauna and small mammal species that use early successional habitat within predominately forested central Appalachian landscapes.
