Book excerpt: IT’S FINALLY HERE As a boy growing up, I always wondered if there was something more to life than what I was taught, surprisingly enough, there really is, much more than you would expect. Through the experiences in life, research and of luck or was it? I have observed that the, supposedly, intelligent people in the world might not be so wise after all. I have learned, as you are maturing out in society that some of life is a humongous cover up. Explaining this to you means, all of these lies exist out of religion and politics. I used to believe that mom and dad were responsible for these lies that were told to us, BUT only because they didn’t know that they were being lied to also. It never had crossed their minds of anything being wrong in society because that’s just the way the system works. However, even though I expose these lies to you, some will be agitated by the information for the reasoning of “Parents are never wrong” at least not your parents ,therefore society, proceeds along for you, on the merry way of ignorance for not even considering that perhaps it just might be true. This book is not written to convert you to any particular religion or towards any corrupt ways of politics. It only provides you with information which otherwise was hidden from you, purposely or it was unavailable for you. The choice of belief or of non belief is of your choice. It may appear to you while reading this book that I am prejudice and or biased in my writing. This is a misconception on the part of the reader showing me, as well as to others, that you do not understand that of what you are reading and of what the writing was intended for. I certainly am not a ‘God’ nor a prophet but a concerned human being who is upset because if you are less aware of a situation then the more people are suckered into a unseeingly way of life, controlled by those who know how to manipulate the masses of people. THE BEAUTY OF LIFE HAS BEEN CORRUPTED

Book excerpt: Written during a critical period of his life, Some of the Dharma is a key volume for understanding Kerouac and the spiritual underpinnings of his work While his future masterpiece, On the Road, languished on the desks of unresponsive editors, Kerouac turned to Buddhist practice, and in 1953 began compiling reading notes on the subject intended for his friend Allen Ginsberg. As Kerouac's Buddhist meditation practice intensified, what had begun as notes evolved into a vast and all-encompassing work of nonfiction into which he poured his life, incorporating poems, haiku, prayers, journal entries, meditations, fragments of letters, ideas about writing, overheard conversations, sketches, blues, and more. The final manuscript, completed in 1956, was as visually complex as the writing: each page was unique, typed in patterns and interlocking shapes. The elaborate form that Kerouac so painstakingly gave the book on his manual typewriter is re-created in this typeset facsimile. Passionate and playful, filled with humor, insight, sorrow, and struggle, Some of the Dharma is one of Kerouac's most profound and original works.

Eleven-year-old Josh Cooper is surprised when his new nanny ends up being a dude, but that pales in comparison to how he feels when he learns the nanny, Aiden, is also a werewolf. Aiden teaches Josh about the Imaginary World, even introducing him to his friends Larry Fancypants (a suave-yet-goofy vampire) and Steve Lickerman (a tall-yet-meek leprechaun). This fascinating world seems harmless, until Josh learns of the shadowy wraith that’s stalking New York, attacking creatures and stealing their powers. As werewolves are ideally suited for fighting wraiths, Aiden is called upon to help capture the elusive Mr. Midnight, unintentionally drawing Josh even deeper into the strange and mysterious.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating read for anyone from general readers to hardcore fans and scholars, this encyclopedia covers virtually every aspect of the zombie as cultural phenomenon, including film, literature, folklore, music, video games, and events. The proliferation of zombie-related fiction, film, games, events, and other media in the last decade would seem to indicate that zombies are "the new vampires" in popular culture. The editors and contributors of Encyclopedia of the Zombie: The Walking Dead in Popular Culture and Myth took on the prodigious task of covering all aspects of the phenomenon, from the less-known historical and cultural origins of the zombie myth to the significant works of film and literature as well as video games in the modern day that feature the insatiable, relentless zombie character. The encyclopedia examines a wide range of significant topics pertaining to zombies, such as zombies in the pulp magazines; the creation of the figure of the zuvembie to subvert decades of censorship by the Comics Code of Authority; Humans vs. Zombies, a popular zombie-themed game played on college campuses across the country; and annual Halloween zombie walks. Organized alphabetically to facilitate use of the encyclopedia as a research tool, it also includes entries on important scholarly works in the expanding field of zombie studies.

Book excerpt: The Thing No One Tells You About Dying Is Just How Much Fun It Can Be. Alive, ad exec Amanda Feral worked hard to wring enjoyment out of her days. Now that she's a zombie, it's a different story. Turns out, Seattle is home to glamorous undead of every description, and Amanda--stylish and impeccably groomed even in the afterlife--is swigging cocktails and living large (so to speak) among its elite. But there are downsides. Not being able to stomach anything except alcohol and human flesh, for instance. And the fact that someone is targeting Seattle's otherworldly inhabitants for their own sinister reasons. Preying on the undead is seriously uncool. The only option is for Amanda and her zombie BFF Wendy and gorgeous gay vampire pal Gil to unearth the culprit among the legions of Seattle's bloodsuckers, shapeshifters, reapers, succubi, and demons--before they all meet a fate a lot worse than death. . . "Worth a read;priceless, really. Road Trip of the Living Dead can't come soon enough." --Urban Fantasy Land

Thinking about it will make you smile during boring meetings. People will wonder what you are up to. On a bad day, when you've screwed up at work, your wife is mad at you, and the kids are sick, this book will give you half an hour's respite. It will take you to a place of adventure, danger, and humor, all woven together by one larger than life character. I had to get all that down fast, because it's important. I'm not a writer, and I don't know how long I can hold your attention. Dr. Larry GatesThe stories in this collection are true. In some instances, the names have been changed to protect the innocent and the not so guiltless. With most days of the past forty-seven years spent in Alaska, the thirty-six stories in this collection are connected primarily with Jake's guiding activities in the Great Land. These stories were selected for their humorous content. This selection of tales is trivial, eclectic, and of minimal redeeming value. But there may be some valuable bits of information, if one looks for them. These stories attempt to entertain readers, to give them a giggle, or at least a wry smirk.

Book excerpt: A young man is having an identity crisis while working as the head of the Investigations Department for the Los Angeles bioengineering firm Engineering Genetics Organizations and Systems. A quarter of the way into the twenty-first century, EGOS has developed and produced a groundbreaking technology in the form of a consumer product called, oddly enough, Egos. This product allows customers to become a fictional character or a dead celebrity for six to eight hours by injecting a DNA-laced cocktail into their brain stem, revolutionizing the concept of role-playing games. When a colleague stumbles upon an anomaly in a group of Egos that the unnamed protagonist has been injecting regularly for the past three years, the brass at EGOS waves it off as nothing to be worried about--except he is exhibiting behaviors that are in line with the reported anomaly. The truth is, he's started to lose the ability to separate fact from fiction. The more he continues to play the role of someone else, the less of him remains, as the lines of reality and fantasy continue to blur.

Book excerpt: Faithful Catholic priest become atheist psychologist shows how he himself shucked and how the reader can enjoy shucking childhood prejudices and superstitions to thrill to rational friendliness in our pluralistic planetary society. This book could have been titled “The Book of Tolerance.” The psychologist author recognizes that each of us learned a lot of traditions and beliefs when too young to evaluate them. Such prejudices are very deeply ingrained into the subconscious. Therefore they are often most difficult to overcome even in adult years and with further experience and education. (Dr. Uhl was already in his 30s when he finally got free; many people never get free.) Each of us grows up and learns to analyze and think critically at different speeds. Even in the same family one sibling may remain highly opinionated and prejudiced, stuck in the past, while another thoughtfully unlearns childhood myths and becomes a broadminded adult. Therefore, tolerance of such differing rates of learning and unlearning is necessary for civilized peace good friendships in a pluralistic society. Such patient understanding is less difficult when one follows the new Golden Rule: Treat others as you would reasonably want and expect them to treat you if your roles were reversed. The thrilling details of an exciting journey with our planetary neighbors are clearly laid out in the little book, Leap of Honesty – Priest to Atheist. A generous sprinkling of earthy humor richly seasons this revolutionary book for enjoyable spiritual nourishment. Previously published as Out of God’s Closet and Imagine No Superstition.

Book excerpt: Despite the prevalence of religious belief in the United States (nearly 200 million Americans belong to 350,000 congregations), a growing minority (14 percent) of U.S. adults identify with no religion whatsoever. Journalist James A. Haught addresses the secular segment of American society in this interesting collection of incisive essays that give voice to honest doubts about religious beliefs. Taken together, Haught''s essays endorse the idea that freedom of religion must include freedom to doubt as well as to believe. Individually, the articles present many different reasons to doubt: - Intellectual integrity demands that we express doubts about beliefs for which there is no scientific evidence.- The historical record, past and present, shows that religion is often the cause of evils, from the Inquisition and the burning of witches to current terrorist violence committed in the name of religion.- Natural evils, such as the 2004 Asian tsunami and devastating diseases, should make any thoughtful person question whether an all-powerful and all-merciful God governs the universe.- The sheer number and diversity of often-conflicting belief systems raise serious doubts about the philosophical coherence of religion as an approach to finding the truth.- Scandals among the clergy undermine the credibility of religion as a sound basis for morality.Written in a straightforward conversational style that makes clear the many scientific, philosophical, and ethical difficulties that plague religion, Haught''s thought-provoking essays will appeal to atheists, agnostics, and anyone with questions about religion.
