Book excerpt: The bloody story of the rise of paramilitaries in Colombia, told through three characters -- a fearless activist, a dogged journalist, and a relentless investigator -- whose lives intersected in the midst of unspeakable terror. Colombia's drug-fueled cycle of terror, corruption, and tragedy did not end with Pablo Escobar's death in 1993. Just when Colombians were ready to move past the murderous legacy of the country's cartels, a new, bloody chapter unfolded. In the late 1990s, right-wing paramilitary groups with close ties to the cocaine business carried out a violent expansion campaign, massacring, raping, and torturing thousands. There Are No Dead Here is the harrowing story of three ordinary Colombians who risked everything to reveal the collusion between the new mafia and much of the country's military and political establishment: JesúríValle, a human rights activist who was murdered for exposing a dark secret; IváVeláuez, a quiet prosecutor who took up Valle's cause and became an unlikely hero; and Ricardo Calderóa dogged journalist who is still being targeted for his revelations. Their groundbreaking investigations landed a third of the country's Congress in prison and fed new demands for justice and peace that Colombia's leaders could not ignore. Taking readers from the sweltering Medellístreets where criminal investigators were hunted by assassins, through the countryside where paramilitaries wiped out entire towns, and into the corridors of the presidential palace in BogotáThere Are No Dead Here is an unforgettable portrait of the valiant men and women who dared to stand up to the tide of greed, rage, and bloodlust that threatened to engulf their country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acclaimed as a modern dramatic masterpiece, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead is the fabulously inventive tale of Hamlet as told from the worm’s-eve view of the bewildered Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, two minor characters in Shakespeare’s play. In Tom Stoppard’s best-known work, this Shakespearean Laurel and Hardy finally get a chance to take the lead role, but do so in a world where echoes of Waiting for Godot resound, where reality and illusion intermix, and where fate leads our two heroes to a tragic but inevitable end. Tom Stoppard was catapulted into the front ranks of modem playwrights overnight when Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead opened in London in 1967. Its subsequent run in New York brought it the same enthusiastic acclaim, and the play has since been performed numerous times in the major theatrical centers of the world. It has won top honors for play and playwright in a poll of London Theater critics, and in its printed form it was chosen one of the “Notable Books of 1967” by the American Library Association.

It’s a pleasure to be in their company.”—Michael Dirda, The Washington Post “An extended meditation on the processes of friendship, [Here and Now] has something substantive to offer.”—The New York Times Book Review After a meeting at an Australian literary festival brought them together in 2008, novelists Paul Auster and J. M. Coetzee began exchanging letters on a regular basis with the hope they might “strike sparks off each other." Here and Now is the result: a three-year epistolary dialogue that touches on nearly every subject from sports to fatherhood, literature to film, philosophy to politics, from the financial crisis to art, death, marriage, friendship, and love. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Norman L. Geisler has been called the "father of evangelical Christian philosophy." He has written more than one hundred books and taught at universities and top seminaries for some fifty-six years. He was the first president of the Evangelical Philosophical Society and the founder and first president of the International Society of Christian Apologetics. He has spoken or debated in more than two dozen countries and held pastoral/pulpit ministries in four states. Many view him as a cross between Thomas Aquinas and Billy Graham. No one has done more to communicate the modern challenges of the Faith to the "average" Christian, to the church, and to the academy. This volume offers creative and constructive essays from twenty-three contributors, all notable in their own right, who preserve and propagate Dr. Geisler's ideas and express appreciation for his influence. Those who know him best say he is "true, faithful, and blessed by God!"

Nathan Farrugia is in a class by himself. You can’t help but enjoy this adventure." ★★★★★ "What an amazing series. Plenty of action, thrills, gut-wrenching pace, cool weapons/gadgets and well written story." ★★★★★ "Can I give this book 10 stars? It kept me on the edge of my seat from the first page to the last!" ★★★★★ "The Fifth Column series is a tour de force. This amazing series deserves a 5 star review." ★★★★★ "Really humorous, lots of action and the characters are so much fun. Loved it. Fast-paced, entertaining read." ★★★★★ "I picked up a copy of The Chimera Vector thinking it would be a standard adventure novel. I was wrong. From the sands of the Middle East to the streets of New York, Nathan Farrugia has taken the techno-action/spy novel pioneered by David Morrell and given it steroids." ★★★★★ "Farrugia weaves an amazing tale of power, deceit and double crosses. Espionage at its finest, intrigue that will tighten your gut and light every nerve on fire, The Chimera Vector goes far beyond science fiction and becomes a fast-paced mystery-thriller that defies early detection of where we are headed." ★★★★★ "This is going down as one of the best series I've read. And that's saying something. Filled with intense action with enough sci-fi and thriller to make me grin like I found the girl of my dreams." ★★★★★ "Loved it. High paced action thriller it definitely is. You think you know where it is going then the plot twists again. It really kept me turning the pages to see what was going to happen next." ★★★★★ "An excellent fast paced series that merges science, science fiction and adventure in one well written read that will make it impossible to put down." ★★★★★ "Oh. Wow. What a book. I found The Chimera Vector to be well written, thoroughly entertaining, and at times unbearably suspenseful. I was literally holding my breath." ★★★★★ "All the action that I really enjoyed in the first one and hoped would continue... the sequel blew that out of the ballpark. Amazing book, even better than the first, if that's possible! Love all the characters.” ★★★★★ “Be warned! This series is totally addictive. Don’t start this unless you’re ready for a wild action-packed ride." About the author Nathan M. Book Synopsis Here, and Here by : Vasilis Papageorgiou
Download or read book Here, and Here written by Vasilis Papageorgiou and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-12-14 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Important to the essays here is the possibility of using logos without the negative, restricting and violent aspects of logos. In this respect I speak about affirmation and about tragic awareness rather than about the tragic itself or tragic conflict, as I read texts of a literary democracy that is already here, texts by Don DeLillo, Tomas Tranströmer, John Ashbery and Thanasis Valtinos, or see arrangements by Lo Snöfall. Indeed it is all about arrangements, about knowing how to affirm and doing it rather than using language and its codes in order to transcribe, however accurate this might be. Arrangements say yes, since they do not raise any absolute boundaries. The arrangement is a logos without logos: it is a cosmos, where affirming is a tragically aware cosmetics. Cosmos is neither the world nor any ordering or embellishment of this world, but an openness as the incalculable accumulation of arrangements that say yes in their awareness that they do not amount to an ontology.
