Book excerpt: The Birds of Wyoming is the first comprehensive guide since 1939 to the status and distribution of Wyoming's avifauna. The book provides detailed information for over 400 bird species known to have occurred in Wyoming through 2008. Each full-page resident species account features a species photo and distribution map, while the non-resident section provides the reader insight on regular migrants and rarities. Introductory chapters authored by state experts give an indepth look at the state's ornithological history, vegetative landscapes, and avian conservation efforts. Habitat-focused sections by regional experts provide a broader view of management and conservation issues within Wyoming's dominant sagebrush, montane forest, and shortgrass prairie ecotones. Birds of Wyoming fills the niche for a state-based reference that will be useful to a wide range of professional disciplines and amateur birders. Governmental land managers as well as local and out-of-state birders alike will benefit from the easily accessible information (and literature references in most cases) in each species account.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW REVISED EDITION that simplifies the highway naming and adds a number of new features that make the book easier to understand and navigate. Contact [email protected] with any questions. Please read this entire description and the notes at the end... Yellowstone National Park is the focal point of Wyoming; however, there is so much more if you know where to look. Hidden gems like badlands and petroglyphs can be found in the plains and valleys, and with 15 mountain ranges over 9,000 ft, Wyoming is hardly the boring prairie that many people envision. Even where the plains seem unspectacular there is a rich history along pioneer trails that served as the gateway to the west throughout the 19th century. This book identifies ALL of this, and is simply a book you should not be without. Most Wyoming travel guides are written to explore a specific subject or location, but it would take a stack of books to cover the state for all subjects. Think of these books as a mile wide and 100 miles deep. This remarkable guide, on the other hand, has most everything in the entire state laid out by the highway mile markers so you will always know what is ahead and exactly how to get there. This book covers National Parks and Monuments, State Parks, sightseeing, camping, picnicking, hiking, historical sites, archaeological sites, rest areas, RV dumps, and general points of interest. The book has over 1900 entries, so think of it as 100 miles wide and 10 miles deep -- enough information to get around, but not an overload of information to wade through. Without a book like this putting together a trip across the state requires a great commitment of time and effort. The author knows this, because he has done it many times. In order to provide massive amounts of information into a book of reasonable size and cost, first off the book, it is not a pocket guide but instead is full A4 paper size measuring 8.3 x 11.7 x 0.5 inches. If this was a pocket guide it would be well over a thousand pages. Secondly, the book is laid out in a clear and concise report style format. The descriptions are brief and to the point and not filled with colorful adjectives. Instead the book uses a simple 5-star "Cool Rating" to convey the author's opinion of the impressiveness of each attraction. In addition, the first two lines for each attraction provide the mileage, GPS coordinates, elevation, which entity owns the land, and a grid system that corresponds to the maps in the book, or can locate the attraction on any map. The detailed directions are also condensed to generally fit on a single line. Just to put a final point on the amount of information in this book, the index is extracted directly from the book itself, and therefore is so comprehensive that it contains over 2,300 entries. So, don't think of whether you should buy this book or that book, this book stands on its own or as the ultimate companion book to any other Wyoming travel book. It will pay for itself many times over in time and fuel savings. If you put it in perspective, the price of the book is around what it costs to operate a vehicle for about 30 miles; maybe 10 or 20 in a big RV -- pretty insignificant. Complete coverage of Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park, Devils Tower National Monument, Fossil Butte National Monument, Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, Fort Laramie National Historic Site, Medicine Lodge State Archaeological Site, Snowy Range, Bighorn Mountains, Wind River Mountains, Sinks Canyon State Park, Guernsey State Park, Glendo State Park, Keyhole State Park, Green River Lakes, Casper Mountain Park, Jackson Hole and much more. NOTES: Because grayscale photos never do justice to things of beauty, the book contains no photos. However, dozens of color photos can be seen on the book website wyomingroadtripbythemilemarker.com.

Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of Generation X and Microserfs, comes the absurd and tender story of a hard-living movie producer and a former child beauty pageant contender who only find each other by losing themselves. Waking up in an L.A. hospital, John Johnson is amazed that it was the flu and not an overdose of five different drugs mixed with cognac that nearly killed him. As a producer of high-adrenaline action flicks, he's led a decadent and dangerous life, purchasing his way through every conceivable variant of sex. But each variation seems to take him one notch away from a capacity for love, and while movie-making was once a way for him to create worlds of sensation, it now bores him. After his near-death experience, John decides to walk away from his life. Susan Colgate is an unbankable former tv star and child beauty pageant contender. Forced to marry a heavy metal singer in need of a Green Card after her parents squander her sitcom earnings, she becomes the alpha road rat. But when the band's popularity dwindles, the marriage dissolves. Flying back to Los Angeles in Economy, Susan's plane crashes and only she survives. As she walks away from the disaster virtually unscathed, Susan, too, decides to disappear. John and Susan are two souls searching for love across the bizarre, celebrity-obsessed landscape of LA, and are driven, almost fatefully, toward each other. Hilarious, fast-paced and ultimately heart-wrenching, Miss Wyoming is about people who, after throwing off their self-made identities, begin the fearful search for a love that exposes all vulnerabilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by Ethel Waxham Love, a Wellesley College graduate who went to Wyoming in 1905 as a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse, and her son, J. David Love, who later became an eminent geologist, Life on Muskrat Creek tells the fascinating story of a family’s day-to-day life on an isolated ranch in early twentieth-century Wyoming. Readers will be held in suspense as they learn about the family’s battle with a variety of challenges, including a near-fatal bout with Spanish influenza, life-threatening encounters with livestock and wildlife, and disastrous episodes of fires, flooding, blizzards, and drought. The book’s depiction of more ordinary events is equally engaging; Ethel describes becoming a wife and raising children without the support of neighbors, women friends, or a wider family network, and David recounts growing up in a wild and remote place where there was no local school to attend. Readers from all walks of life will find Life on Muskrat Creek to be a lively and provocative book.

Book excerpt: In twenty heavy chapters, this book chronicles Anselmi's experiences growing up as a straight edge, BMX-riding metalhead in Rock Springs, Wyoming, a place with one of the highest per capita suicide rates in the United States. His grandpa was a well-known businessman and politician in the area, and was featured in a 1977 60 Minutes episode for his alleged connections to organized crime. This is only the beginning of Anselmi's heavy saga, and it interweaves all of the social and personal history one might expect from a story like this--including Black Sabbath, Pantera, and Metallica logo tattoos, explorations in LSD, metal, and BMX culture, self-loathing and sobriety, and--finally--a very unique perspective on what it means to live in a heavy fucking world.
