Book excerpt: Zombies, deadly chipmunks, tacos, and an out of control infection. So, reality, but funnier. Sid Singleton came to the El Coyote Gordo hoping for decent tacos and salsa fresca worthy of the name. Instead, he found zombies as zombie as any zombie ever zombied. Now it’s up to him to find every last staggering flesh-eating fiend in the surrounding Coyote National Forest in order to stop this local infection from making the world into a great big apocalypse enchilada. A grande burrito of a novel seasoned with snarky wit and unforgettable characters, it is book one in a series full of zombies, deadly chipmunks, and dark humor. Fans of Zombieland and John Dies at the End this is just your cup of infected gore! A tasty sample: I made it out to the parking lot in time to see the dishwasher pedaling away on his bike followed by a gruesome sombrero’d silhouette. Against the parking lot light, the tassels of that big sombrero dangled in time with the left forearm hanging by only a few stretched tendons from the place where the cook’s cleaver had chopped it. I heard his soccer dad sneakers scraping the pavement in dead bass notes under the receding high-pitched squeaks of the dishwasher’s bicycle chain. I wondered, would I see any sign of that cool soccer camping Dad demeanor if I looked in his eyes. I saw no difference in his behavior. From here, he was all zombie, no dad.

It serves not only as a follow-up to its predecessor (The Zombie Movie Encyclopedia, McFarland 2001), which covered movies from 1932 up until the late 1990s, but also as a fresh exploration of what uniquely defines the genre in the 2000s. In-depth entries provide critical analysis of the zombie as creature in more than 280 feature-length movies, from 28 countries and filmed on six continents. An appendix offers shorter entries for more than 100 shorts and serials.

Book excerpt: New York Times bestseller Introduction by New York Times bestselling author and famous minor television personality John Hodgman One of my dad’s favorite jokes about getting older was: “I went out for coffee when I was twenty-one and when I got back I was fifty-eight!” I get what he meant now. Time flies. My first book, If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a "B" Movie Actor, was published back in 2001 and it chronicles the adventures of a “mid-grade, kind of hammy actor" (my words), cutting his teeth on exploitation movies far removed from mainstream Hollywood. This next book, an “Act II” if you will, could be considered my “maturing years” in show business, when I began to say “no” more often and gravitated toward self-generated material. Taking stock in the overall quality of my life, I fled Los Angeles and moved to a remote part of Oregon to renew, regroup and reload. If that sounds tame, the journey from Evil Dead to Spider-Man to Burn Notice was long, with plenty of adventures/mishaps along the way. I never pictured myself hovering above Baghdad in a Blackhawk helicopter, facing a pack of wild dogs in Bulgaria, or playing an aging Elvis Presley with cancer on his penis - how can you predict this stuff? The sheer lunacy of show business is part of the fun for me and I hope you'll come along for the ride. – Bruce “Don’t Call Me Ash” Campbell

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If this book were just a satire, it would grow old pretty quickly: 1.Stumble to the front. 2.Raise your arms. 3.Groooooaaaannnnn. Instead, this book is a deeply researched investigation into why most public speeches don't really accomplish our goals and what we can do about that. As I was writing it, perhaps because I teach popular culture as well as public speaking, I became somewhat obsessed with the ways that the scary, brainless interaction that passes for speaking is so similar to the scary, brainless zombies in popular culture. You shamble up to the front of the room. The audience groans and shuffles around. Everyone is looking for brains. There are none to be found. All suffer from the living death of boredom and lack of engagement. One of the scary things about zombies is that they look like people, your neighbors, family, colleagues and friends, but they are not. At least one person in most zombie movies will make the mistake of thinking there is still humanity in there and they get chomped for it. This is also what is scary and sad about most speeches. Everyone looks human. But there are no human connections. Our minds disappear into a glaze of Power Point. In most places where we give speeches, we do the same thing. We brainlessly show up to the same places, go through the same motions, use the same kinds of slides, and repeat the things that seem to matter even when they don't. All too often we show up to meetings or events or class, pretending that we are doing a lot of work. And we want our audiences to believe it too. And when they clap and we sit down, for a minute all of us feel that it was all right, that we really did all just endure something together that was worth it. A second later, that feeling is gone, and we wonder what happened to another day or another afternoon and wish, like we did when we were ten, that somehow school would be cancelled and we could, just for a day, choose again to do something cool with our time. Most speeches fail. We pretend that this is okay, that it is not a terrible waste of everyone's time. We go through the motions again like zombies. This book will try to drill down to get to what is most important and what can actually make you better. The argument is simple: you are doing it wrong. Public speaking, at its best, moves people and creates change. But when was the last time you were enthralled by a speech? No phone, no wandering attention, no thoughts of lunch? Speaking has become an inert show, a droning on in front of a flickering failure of visual aids. We have already given up before we stand up to give a speech. No one cares, not even you. Public life has been reduced to a "let's just get this over with" mentality. Too strong a judgment? Look at the faces in the room around you next time you are sitting in an audience and tell me I'm wrong. We need to resurrect this dead thing called speaking. This book has two new chapters. Seven chapters have been extensively altered. All of this, from the first-ever public speaking textbook chapter on depression to the extensive use of Dungeons & Dragons references in the figurative language chapter, is designed to make the book more interesting and useful than the first edition was. Don't get me wrong. I loved the first edition of this book. It was the best thing I'd ever written. But, it needed to be better.

Book excerpt: The CW's long-running series Supernatural follows the adventures of brothers Sam and Dean Winchester as they pursue the "family business" of hunting supernatural beings. Blending monster-of-the-week storylines with the unfolding saga of the brothers' often troubled relationship, the show represents Gothic concerns of anxiety, the monstrous, family trauma and, of course, the supernatural. The lines between human and monster, good and evil, are blurred and individual identities and motivations resist easy categorization. This collection of new essays examines how the series both incorporates and complicates Gothic elements related to traditional tropes, storytelling, women and gender issues and monstrosity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Kathy Acker's death in 1997 the body of critical work on her fiction has continued to grow, and even to flourish. The continuing critical attention that her work has received is testament both to the complexity and intellectual scope of her many artistic and critical projects, and to the continuing relevance of her concerns and ambitions in the recent and contemporary world; a world that her fictions prefigure and interrogate in ways that we perhaps could not have recognized during her lifetime. This collection of essays provides readers with access to a range of critical and theoretical essays that present a detailed analysis of transnationalism in Kathy Acker’s fiction. A wider aim of this book is to locate Acker’s work in the context of current debates on transnationalism, postnationalism, and global identity. Kathy Acker and Transnationalism therefore constitutes a timely re-appraisal of an important American writer, and a contribution to the growing field of studies in transnationalism.

I use the term “joint venture” because both of us have jobs here...you and I. While admittedly, I do most of the heavy lifting by turning a magician’s thin air into readable and flowing prose, your effort is then required to peruse and enjoy said work. Yep, it’s give and take, ying and yang, odd man out, red rover, red rover, send Jimmy right over, world-peace achieved-in-our-lifetime, grab a seat when the music stops kind of stuff. I sincerely hope your life has rolled along as a well-oiled and properly tuned machine since last we spoke. I am well. Thanks for asking. With that said, give me your hand and come this way. I have many new thoughts to share with you....most of them scattered.
