Book excerpt: Candid, Vulnerable, Informative, Inspirational When Skyler was three years old, he was diagnosed with severe, non-verbal autism. When he was 17, his mom wrote a book about his amazing life. From page one, Welcome to My Life delivers on its promise to place you squarely in Skyler's life, surrounded by mom and dad, Laurie and Josh, and superstar sister, Kendall. Detailed sensory descriptions take you to doctors' appointments and trick-or-treating, to Qdoba and the kitchen table, to the bathroom for another "pull-ups" change, to family gatherings, to the Autism Center, and to conversations and internal dialogue so honest that you'll feel like you're part of the family too. Welcome to My Life shares the 14-year journey of a true warrior mom advocating for her non-verbal, severely autistic son from diagnosis through his teenage years. This brutally honest and heartwarming account details the daily struggles and often lack of social understanding that families face when raising a child who relies on parental assistance for every need. "A memoir like no other -- truthful and raw, hilarious and unexpected, heartbreaking and uplifting. Laurie L. Hellmann's Welcome to My Life is a love letter to her son Skyler and a welcome letter to the masses. It is dose of reassurance to us all, and a reminder that the world -- even when it's unpredictable and frightening -- is still shimmering with silver linings and powerful lessons." Because He Has No Words and Yet So Much to Say For mothers and fathers, sister and brothers, autism isn't a personal diagnosis ... it's a family diagnosis. Especially when your autistic loved one copes with significant development delays, suffers from serious chronic medical conditions, is an insomniac, and exhibits behaviors that disrupt the flow of day-to-day life. Autism turns households inside out, cracks hearts wide open and turns daily routines upside down. Take a journey with Laurie L. Hellmann and explore: -- How Skyler's autism diagnosis shook and then restored her faith -- The realities of navigating divorce, co-parenting and new love when your child has special needs -- The emotional and physical toll (on Skyler and his family) of countless medical and behavioral treatments -- The difference between hope, false hope, acceptance and gratitude in the face of disappointment, uncertainty and fear -- The effects of autism on sibling relationships -- How autism can challenge and strengthen a marriage -- Why laughter is good medicine for us all Experience the laughter and love, unspoken bonds and unflagging devotion of one very special family. And be changed forever by the knowledge that a mother's love knows no bounds, and that autism -- though it presents various challenges -- does not define who a person is nor does it devalue or diminish their contributions to this world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My mother, Diane Johnson Barnett, wrote the poem that you read. She is the strongest person I know. As you get further into this book, you will begin to further understand that statement. In order to completely understand and appreciate the words of this poem, you must know its inspiration. In order to know its inspiration, you as a reader, please allow me to take you on a trip. For this trip, you will not need an airplane ticket, train ticket, or automobile ticket. All you need for this trip is an imagination, open mind, and an open heart. I guess the best way for me to kick this story off is to begin at the beginning, and the beginning is the day I was born. Saturday, February 16, 1980, 5:30 a.m., Saginaw General hospital located in Saginaw, Michigan. Let me just stop and say that I am the kind of person that believes that God writes our life stories before we are even born. Now let us run it back to the story. When I was born, it was into a family of hard workers who were and still are full of love. I mean that they would have to be in order to deal with a character like me in a situation that was about to occur six short years later. (More of this later.) Trust me, it all will make sense as we go deeper. Before I continue to tell this story, I hope everyone will be able to draw something. Allow me to formerly introduce myself. My name is Larry Barnett Jr. I am twenty-five years old and a student of Delta College. I am paralyzed from my neck down. I have been for the past nineteen, almost twenty, years. All the words you have read so far are about me. Yes, it is true I was born 2-16-80. My parents, Diane and Larry Barnett Sr., they had a perfectly normal child with the full ability to run, jump, flip, and fight. Yes, I said fight! Some would call me bad. Some other people would call me active. Some would even say hyperactive. However, I prefer to call it “creative.” I told you earlier that my mom is the strongest person I know. Here why I say what I say. My mother told me before she was pregnant with me how she would pray to God and ask him to give her a child she could love. Believe me, she has enough love to fill ten football fields. The reason why I make this statement is that no matter what I have dealt with in my life, she always had my back. Even when I felt everything around me was falling apart, she was always there when the dust settled. Back to my childhood, the first six years of my life was perfectly normal. I was able to take family vacations to places like Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, and Louisiana. I must admit that I was still able to do some traveling after my life changed. I went to places like Cedar Point amusement park in Ohio. I was able to go to wrestle Mania IV in Indiana. However, none of these above trips would compare to the involuntary trip that I would take last June 19, 1986. Thursday, June 19, 1986, the day in my life that I know I’ll never forget because this is the day that I will be forced to leave everything that I know and love. God knows how long, but my life after actually began to take a frightening turn. Two months and nine days before this. From the day that I was born in 1980 until Friday, April 25, 1986, I had a normal childhood. On this day, everything for me almost ended. By this time, I was over half of my kindergarten years in school. I was attending a school called St. Stephens. Just for the record, I dislike everything about this particular school, mainly those stupid blue uniforms that had to be worn daily. Nevertheless, I am getting too far up the track. By this time in my life, my mother and I had a pretty good routine. In fact, it went like this: I would attend school from noon until 3:30 p.m. After school, my mom would pick me up and take me to my Aunt Gloria Jean and Aunt Azailean’s house until it was time for her to get home from work. However, this day, we would have to break from our routine. My mother told me that th

Should she indulge her craving for sausage after sixteen years of not eating meat? Will her birth plan involve Enya or hypnosis, or neither? And just how worried should she be about her baby falling into a composting toilet? This captivating memoir combines warmth and humour to reveal the love that binds families together. Welcome to Your New Life evokes the shock of plunging into a life-changing adventure and the kicking required to return to the surface. 'This book does what great literature should: it tries to get a grip on life - the making of it, the living-and-loving it, the leaving it. ' Anna Funder 'Few books have made me howl with laughter as this one has...she has an exquisite ability to recast the banal into another sphere....a deliciously subversive read.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As seen in USA Today's hottest releases and The Washington Post's 10 New Books Spotlight “Sarah Wilson is a force of nature – quite literally. She has taken her pain and grief about our sick and troubled world and alchemized it into action, advocacy, adventure, poetry, and true love.” — ELIZABETH GILBERT Wake up and reclaim your one wild and precious life. New York Times bestselling author Sarah Wilson shows you how in this radical spiritual guidebook, the book we need NOW. Many of us are living with the sense that things are not right with the world and are in a state of spiritual PTSD. We have retreated, morally and psychologically; we are experiencing a crisis of disconnection—from one another, from our true values, from joy, and from life as we feel we are meant to be living it. Sarah Wilson argues that this sense of despair and disconnection is ironically what unites us—that deep down, we are all feeling that same itch for a new way of living. Drawing on science, literature, philosophy and the wisdom of some of the world’s leading experts, and her personal journey, Wilson offers a hopeful path forward to the life we love. En route, she shows us how to wake up and reconnect with life using “wild practices” that include: · Hike. Embrace the “walking cure” as great minds throughout history have. · Go to your edge. Do what scares you and embrace discomfort daily. · #Buylesslivemore. Break the cycle of mindless consumption and get light with your life. · Become a soul nerd. Light up your intellect with the arts. · Get “full-fat spiritual”. Have an active practice and use it to change the world. · Practice wild activism. Through sustained, non-violent protest we can create our better world. The time has come to boldly, wildly imagine better. We are being called upon, individually and as a society, to forge a new path and to find a new way of living. Will you join the journey?

Book excerpt: Welcome to your life. It's probably not what you expected it to be. About to turn thirty years old, Guy Bradford finds himself trapped in his dead-end job at the Gas and Go on the outskirts of Richmond, Illinois. Stuck caring for his perpetually ungrateful father in the tiny hometown he's never been able to escape, he wonders when he'll finally be able to begin living his own life. Sophie Ross spent her twenties living in other people's homes, caring for their aging parents. The work brought her to Richmond and dozens of other small towns like it. Although she's ready for something new, this is the only way she's found that ensures her little sister gets the opportunities she herself never had. After a brief meeting at The Duke on her last night in town, Sophie and Guy decide they might be kindred spirits... and maybe even more. But once she leaves, their struggle to find out is complicated by her transience and his father's health. In order to finally meet again, Sophie will have to weather a devastating betrayal and Guy will need to avoid falling prey to the scheming of an alluring former classmate. If they don't succeed, they'll both be sentenced to a lifetime of wondering what might have been. This is a story about the sacrifices we make for family and the small towns and their little bars where people struggle to find meaning in lives they didn't plan on living.

Book excerpt: "During the ten years in which Austin was their home, Amelia Barr took an active part in the social life of the frontier capital and wrote in her diary vivid pictures of many Texans and local events and scenes. In 1914 much of this material appeared in her autobiography, All the Days of My Life! Her accounts included women, Sam Houston, Indians who visited the capital, and local affairs concerning the Civil War. Though she did not show it outwardly, Amelia Barr was a mystic and deeply religious. Her life was governed by intuitions and prophetic dreams, many of which she related in striking detail. In 1866 the family moved to Galveston, where Barr had found new employment. In the yellow fever scourge of the next year, Barr and three sons died, leaving Mrs. Barr and three daughters.
