Zunächst wird eine Definition festgelegt, um anschließend auf die Vorteile der zwei größeren Unterarten der Mehrsprachigkeit bzw. den Erwerb dieser einzugehen. Dann wird auf das Code-Switching und -Mixing eingegangen, da auch dieser Aspekt der Mehrsprachigkeit häufig negativ dargestellt wird, doch mehr Potenzial birgt, als die meisten vermuten. Nachdem die unterschiedlichen Arten des Mehrsprachigkeitserwerbs behandelt wurden, wird zum Schluss auf die verschiedenen Sprachen an sich eingegangen, da jede Sprache einen eigenen Wert hat. An dieser Stelle muss betont werden, dass in dieser Arbeit nur auf die Vorteile und positiven Folgen der Mehrsprachigkeit eingegangen wird. Benachteiligung, Stigmatisierung oder Vernachlässigung sind klare Faktoren, die im Leben von mehrsprachigen Schülern und Schülerinnen mit Migrationshintergrund eine große Rolle, auch in Bezug auf die schulische Entwicklung, spielen. Hier wird jedoch die Mehrsprachigkeit an sich analysiert - der Hintergrund durch welchen er entsteht jedoch kaum. Zudem muss gesagt werden, dass die Folgenden Vorteile nicht auf jeden Einzelfall zutreffen, da der sozio-ökonomische Status, eigene Fähigkeit und Intelligenz, Verhalten der Lehrer und Eltern, Bildungsnähe und viele weitere Faktoren das Potenzial für schulischen Erfolg, dass durch die Mehrsprachigkeit entsteht, beeinflussen. In der Literatur wird nicht selten auch die gegensätzliche Meinung vertreten, dass Mehrsprachigkeit negative Folgen, auch auf schulische Leistungen, hat.
