This book was released on 2017-06-16 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inequalities play an important role in almost all branches of mathematics as well as in other areas of science and engineering. This book surveys the present state of the theory of weighted integral inequalities of Hardy type, including modifications concerning Hardy-Steklov operators, and some basic results about Hardy-type inequalities and their limit (Carleman-Knopp type) inequalities. It also describes some rather new areas such as higher order and fractional order Hardy-type inequalities and integral inequalities on the cone of monotone functions, together with some applications and open problems. In this second edition, all chapters in the first edition have been updated with new information. Moreover, a new chapter contains new and complementary information concerning: (a) a convexity approach to prove and explain Hardy-type inequalities; (b) sharp constants; (c) scales of inequalities to characterize Hardy-type inequalities; (d) Hardy-type inequalities in other function spaces; and (e) a number of new open questions.

Book excerpt: This book project was initiated at The Tribute Workshop in Honour of Gunnar Sparr and the follow-up workshop Inequalities, Interpolation, Non-commutative, Analysis, Non-commutative Geometry and Applications INANGA08, held at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, Lund University in May and November of 2008. The resulting book is dedicated in celebration of Gunnar Sparr's sixty-fifth anniversary and more than forty years of exceptional service to mathematics and its applications in engineering and technology, mathematics and engineering education, as well as interdisciplinary, industrial and international cooperation. This book presents new advances in several areas of mathematics and engineering mathematics including applications in modern technology, engineering and life sciences. Thirteen high-quality chapters put forward many new methods and results, reviews of up to date research and open directions and problems for future research. A special chapter by Gunnar Sparr and Georg Lindgren contains a historical account and important aspects of engineering mathematics research and education, and the implementation of the highly successful education programme in Engineering Mathematics at Lund Institute of Technology, where not only the mathematical sciences have played a role. This book will serve as a source of inspiration for a broad spectrum of researchers and research students.

Book excerpt: Analysis and its applications have been major areas for research in mathematics and allied fields. The fast growing power of computation has made a significant and useful impact in these areas. This has lead to computational analysis and the emergence of fields like Bezier-Bernstein methods for computer-aided geometric design, constructive approximation and wavelets, and even computational harmonic analysis. Analysis and Applications consists of research articles, including a few survey articles, by eminent mathematicians projecting trends in constructive and computational approximation, summability theory, optimal control and theory and applications of function spaces and wavelets.

Apart from the intrinsic interest, the knowledge of differentiable manifolds has become useful — even mandatory — in an ever-increasing number of areas of mathematics and its applications. Many results/concepts in analysis find their most natural (generalized) setting in manifold theory. An interrelation of geometry and analysis can be found in this volume. The book presents original research, besides a few survey articles by eminent experts from all over the world on current trends of research in differential and algebraic geometry, classical and modern analysis including the theory of distributions (linear and nonlinear), partial differential equations and wavelets.

Book excerpt: The fundamental contributions of Professor Maz'ya to the theory of function spaces and especially Sobolev spaces are well known and often play a key role in the study of different aspects of the theory, which is demonstrated, in particular, by presented new results and reviews from world-recognized specialists. Sobolev type spaces, extensions, capacities, Sobolev inequalities, pseudo-Poincare inequalities, optimal Hardy-Sobolev-Maz'ya inequalities, Maz'ya's isocapacitary inequalities in a measure-metric space setting and many other actual topics are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an accessible introduction to the theory of variable Lebesgue spaces. These spaces generalize the classical Lebesgue spaces by replacing the constant exponent p with a variable exponent p(x). They were introduced in the early 1930s but have become the focus of renewed interest since the early 1990s because of their connection with the calculus of variations and partial differential equations with nonstandard growth conditions, and for their applications to problems in physics and image processing. The book begins with the development of the basic function space properties. It avoids a more abstract, functional analysis approach, instead emphasizing an hands-on approach that makes clear the similarities and differences between the variable and classical Lebesgue spaces. The subsequent chapters are devoted to harmonic analysis on variable Lebesgue spaces. The theory of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator is completely developed, and the connections between variable Lebesgue spaces and the weighted norm inequalities are introduced. The other important operators in harmonic analysis - singular integrals, Riesz potentials, and approximate identities - are treated using a powerful generalization of the Rubio de Francia theory of extrapolation from the theory of weighted norm inequalities. The final chapter applies the results from previous chapters to prove basic results about variable Sobolev spaces.
