Jahrhundert. Eine genaue Eingrenzung in Bezug auf den Begriff des frühen Mittelalters kann nur schwer vorgenommen werden. Das Problem dabei ist die Einteilung oder Gliederung „des unendlichen Flusses der Geschichte“. Gemeint ist damit die Bestimmung von Daten, „die den Charakter von Zäsuren haben: Wende-punkte, an denen alte Entwicklungen zu Ende gehen und von denen neue ihren Ausgang nehmen.“(1) So begann das frühe Mittelalter für die Humanisten mit dem Ende der Antike, also 476 (Untergang des weströmischen Reiches). „Mit gleichem Recht ließen sich jedoch auch andere Zahlen nennen, zum Beispiel 375: das Jahr des Hunneneinfalls, der die gesamte germanische Völkerwanderung im Gefolge hatte, oder auch 325: der Herrscherbeginn Konstantins, der als erster christlicher Kaiser eine neue christliche Ära eingeleitet hat.“(2) Bei der Untersuchung der rechtlichen und sozialen Stellung der Frau im frühen Mittelalter müssen die von Gesellschaft, Wirtschaft und Politik geprägten Rahmenbedingungen hinterfragt, sowie die Denkstrukturen und das ‚Frauenbild‘ jener Zeit berücksichtigt werden. Dies geschieht, um ein besseres Verständnis über die rechtliche und soziale Stellung der Frau im frühen Mittelalter zu erzielen, die isoliert betrachtet für Menschen der heutigen Zeit mit einem auf Gleichberechtigung ausgerichteten Denken nur schwer nachvollziehbar ist. Dies soll im Vergleich der Bedingungen und Formen weiblicher Lebensgestaltung von Frauen im Mittelalter geschehen. Ich werde mich auf die Merkmale des vorherrschenden bäuerlichen Lebens beschränken, da die Handlung des „Armen Heinrich“ außerhalb der höfischen Welt abläuft. Erkenntnisse über die damalige Situation der Frau müssen unter Beachtung des jeweiligen Standes, der sozialen Funktion und der strukturellen Gegebenheiten der mittelalterlichen Gesellschaft differenziert betrachtet werden. Auch wenn sich eine große Anzahl an Quellen zu der Thematik findet, so „fehlt es auf vielen Gebieten noch an gründlichen Einzelanalysen, bleiben zahlreiche Fragen offen, die weitere Forschungen erfordern.“ Eine umfassende Darstellung des mittelalterlichen Lebens der Frau ist nicht möglich, jedoch lassen sich verschiedene Aspekte aufzeigen, die einen Einblick in Lebensformen und das damalige Frauenbild geben. Eine Fragestellung dieser Arbeit ist, wie viel „Wirklichkeit“ (will sagen gesellschaftliche Realität) sich in den Verhaltensweisen der Figur der Meierstochter erkennen lässt; welche Übereinstimmungen gibt es, die zwischen den Aussagen dieser Erzählung einerseits und der Realität der gesellschaftlichen Ordnung andererseits bestehen. Dabei muss jedoch bedacht werden, dass für die mittelalterliche Zeit nicht eindeutig feststellbar ist, inwiefern Beziehungen zwischen Literatur und den tatsächlichen Verhaltensweisen der Menschen und den Gegebenheiten bestehen. Informationen und Erkenntnisse über Frauen aus den „unteren Schichten“ sind sehr begrenzt. Hauptsächlich finden sich Quellen über Frauen aus den „mittleren“ und „oberen“ Schichten. Es ist aber bekannt, dass die Erzählung des „Armen Heinrich“ verstärkt von den Menschen rezipiert wurde und die verarbeitete Thematik sie angesprochen hat., Das Interesse - so lässt sich schließen - rührte auch daher, dass sich die Menschen in den literarischen Figuren und ihren Problemen wieder gefunden haben mögen.

The ten chapters deal with various aspects of the question, and the voices of a variety of authors - both female and male - are heard.
