In this unique and wide-ranging collection of writings on poets and poetic trends in Russia, contributors from the United States, Britain, and Russia examine the place of poetry in Russian culture. Through a variety of critical approaches, these scholars, translators, and poets consider a broad cross section of Russian poets, from Pushkin to Brodsky, Shvarts, and Kibirov.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1947, a man is found shot to death in an old military bunker near the Brenner Pass that links Italy to Austria. His papers claim him to be a farm labourer; the scars on his face could only have come from duelling, the mark of a man who was once a member of a German student fraternity. He is Dr. Gerhard Bast, lawyer, athlete, former head of the Gestapo in the Austrian city of Linz and a wanted war criminal. A few years before, his affair with a married woman led to the birth of a son, Martin Pollack, who in his maturity sets out to discover the truth about his father." "Martin Pollack reveals that his loving grandparents, with whom he spent long and happy holidays as a child, were ardent and unrepentant Nazis who never ceased to hate and resent Jews and Slavs, and never acknowledged what their son had really done. And what he did is the heart of this book, as Pollack quietly, relentlessly reconstructs the family history, moving from present-day Slovenia - where his grandparents were involved in vicious sectarian strife with their Slav neighbours - through Austria between the wars, where the family were enthusiastic members of the illegal Nazi party. Once war begins in 1939, Pollack tracks his father from Austria to Poland and on into Russia, where he was the head of an Einsatzgruppe, a killing squad, and back into Poland during the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. The closing months of the war find him rounding up Jews and partisans in Slovakia. In every place that Pollack's father has been, the evidence of mass murder mounts higher and higher, the undeniable evidence impossible to resist."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: 'Atta Troll' is a poem written by Heinrich Heine. The work mocks the literary failings Heine saw in the radical poets, particularly Freiligrath. It tells the story of the hunt for a runaway bear, Atta Troll, who symbolises many of the attitudes Heine despised, including a simple-minded egalitarianism and a religious view which makes God in the believer's image (Atta Troll conceives God as an enormous, heavenly polar bear). Atta Troll's cubs embody the nationalistic views Heine loathed.

Book excerpt: Although this story of a romance between an aristocratic Wehrmacht officer and a mysterious woman in Vienna set against the 1939 invasion of Poland was deemed unacceptable fare for Third Reich readership due to its ambiguity, lack of heroic military images, and the sympathetic portrayal of a suffering Poland, the novel's actual purpose and highly subversive quality were hardly suspected by the Ministry of Propaganda."--Jacket.

Book excerpt: “A terrific fast-moving book. . . a truly clever, rather wonderful book that both plays with and defies genre” – Irish Times A taxi-driver in 1930s Vienna impersonates a murder victim, and is caught into a dangerous spiral Twice adapted for film, I Was Jack Mortimer is a tale of misappropriated identity as darkly captivating and twisting as the books of Patricia Highsmith. “One doesn’t step into anyone’s life, not even a dead man’s, without having to live it to the end.” A man climbs into Ferdinand Sponer's cab, gives the name of a hotel, and before he reaches it has been murdered: shot through the throat. And though Sponer has so far committed no crime, he is drawn into the late Jack Mortimer's life, and might not be able to escape its tangles and intrigues before it is too late... Book excerpt: By closely examining the interaction between intellectual and material culture in the period before the Nazis came to power in Germany, the author comes to the conclusion that, contrary to widely held assumptions, consumer culture in the Weimar period, far from undermining reading, used reading culture to enhance its goods and values. Reading material was marked as a consumer good, while reading as an activity, raising expectations as it did, influenced consumer culture. Consequently, consumption contributed to the diffusion of reading culture, while at the same time a popular reading culture strengthened consumption and its values. Gideon Reuveni is Director of the Centre for German Jewish Studies at the University of Sussex. He is the co-editor of The Economy in Jewish History (Berghahn, 2010) and several other books on different aspects of Jewish history. Presently he is working on a book on consumer culture and the making of Jewish identity in Europe.

Book excerpt: To Be Continued... explores the world's most popular form of television drama; the soap opera. From Denver to Delhi, Moscow to Manchester, audiences eagerly await the next episode of As the World Turns, The Rich Also Weep or Eastenders. But the popularity of soap operas in Britain and the US pales in comparison to the role that they play in media cultures in other parts of the world. To Be Continued... investigates both the cultural specificity of television soap operas and their reception in other cultures, covering soap production and soap watching in the U.S., Asia, Europe, Australia and Latin America. The contributors consider the nature of soap as a media text, the history of the serial narrative as a form, and the role of the soap opera in the development of feminist media criticism. To Be Continued... presents the first scholarly examination of soap opera as global media phenomenon.

Book excerpt: A former Austro-Hungarian officer and a nobleman, Alexander Lernet-Holenia (1897-1976) was a writer obsessed with the related concepts of postimperial Austrian national identity, Central European regionalism, and monarchism. Throughout most of his wide-ranging oeuvre, which includes novels, novellas, historical and biographical studies, short stories, essays, poetry, plays, and film scripts, he conveyed the image of an Austria inescapably haunted by the sociocultural elements of the lost Austro-Hungarian Empire. Reevaluation of Lernet-Holenia's work is overdue, because his fiction, previously understood only as imperial nostalgia, offers a significant representation of twentieth-century Austrian history from a conservative viewpoint. Using a sociopolitical approach, the present study analyzes the author's critical evaluations of post-imperial Austrian problems of national identity. Ten of Lernet-Holenia's works published between 1931 and 1969 - nine novels and one novella which deal specifically with Austrian society - are examined.
