Book excerpt: Excerpt from Weekly Station Reports of the Division of Dry Land Agriculture: April 1 to 8, 1939-April 29, 1939 Drying weather during the first three days of the period made it possible to start work in the fields on April 3. Snow and rain flurries during the next three days, however, kept the soil too wet for tillage, and operations were discontinued for the time being. The additional moisture, together with favorable growing temperatures have been reflected in marked improvements in the condition of winter wheat. Stands on stubbled-ih and other tillage treatments which showed poor emergence last fall have been increased through the germination of winter-dormant seed. Weeds are also starting in these plots and promise to offer considerable competition to the winter wheat. Winter wheat on fallowed land appears to be in excellent condition.
