Book excerpt: The present volume seeks to offer a novel and interdisciplinary overview of the question of literary interpretation and the numerous perspectives current in the field today. Written by early-career researchers and enriched with the important contributions of three senior lecturers, the articles contained in this compilation are devised to work as a multi-faceted whole that may at the same time give inspiration to students and constitute a guide to more experienced scholars. Acting as an integrating entity that agglutinates works from scholars across Europe, the editors consider this book to be a clear example of the dynamism of present-day literary studies and of the numerous ways in which literature can speak to people. Following Margaret Atwood’s statement, “The answers you get from literature depend on the questions you pose”, this volume may be said to possess the potential to provide as many answers as it poses new questions which will stimulate future research in the field.

Book Synopsis Unravelling Trauma and Weaving Resilience with Systemic and Narrative Therapy by : Sabine Vermeire
Download or read book Unravelling Trauma and Weaving Resilience with Systemic and Narrative Therapy written by Sabine Vermeire and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unravelling Trauma and Weaving Resilience with Systemic and Narrative Therapy is an innovative book that details how clinicians can engage children, families and their networks in creative and collaborative relationships to elicit change within the context of trauma and violence. Combining systemic, narrative and dialogical theoretical frameworks with clinical examples, this volume focuses on therapeutic conversations that can help children, and those involved with them, deconstruct their experienced difficulties, and create more hopeful stories and alternative ways of relating to one another through a sense of play. Vermeire advocates for serious playfulness as a way of directly addressing trauma and its effects, as well as along ‘trauma-sensitive’ side paths. Puppetry, artwork, interviews and theatre play are used to weave networks of resilience in ever-widening circles and this approach is informed by the awareness that individual problems are always to be seen as relational, social and political. This book is an important read for therapists and social workers who work with traumatised children and their multi-stressed families.

Book Synopsis Bauhaus Weaving Theory by : T’ai Smith
Download or read book Bauhaus Weaving Theory written by T’ai Smith and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bauhaus school in Germany has long been understood through the writings of its founding director, Walter Gropius, and well-known artists who taught there such as Wassily Kandinsky and László Moholy-Nagy. Far less recognized are texts by women in the school’s weaving workshop. In Bauhaus Weaving Theory, T’ai Smith uncovers new significance in the work the Bauhaus weavers did as writers. From colorful, expressionist tapestries to the invention of soundproofing and light-reflective fabric, the workshop’s innovative creations influenced a modernist theory of weaving. In the first careful examination of the writings of Bauhaus weavers, including Anni Albers, Gunta Stözl, and Otti Berger, Smith details how these women challenged assumptions about the feminine nature of their craft. As they harnessed the vocabulary of other disciplines like painting, architecture, and photography, Smith argues, the weavers resisted modernist thinking about distinct media. In parsing texts about tapestries and functional textiles, the vital role these women played in debates about medium in the twentieth century and a nuanced history of the Bauhaus comes to light. Bauhaus Weaving Theory deftly reframes the Bauhaus weaving workshop as central to theoretical inquiry at the school. Putting questions of how value and legitimacy are established in the art world into dialogue with the limits of modernism, Smith confronts the belief that the crafts are manual and technical but never intellectual arts.

Book Synopsis A New Deal for Navajo Weaving by : Jennifer McLerran
Download or read book A New Deal for Navajo Weaving written by Jennifer McLerran and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2022-05-10 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New Deal for Navajo Weaving provides a detailed history of early to mid-twentieth-century Diné weaving projects by non-Natives who sought to improve the quality and marketability of Navajo weaving but in so doing failed to understand the cultural significance of weaving and its role in the lives of Diné women. By the 1920s the durability and market value of Diné weavings had declined dramatically. Indian welfare advocates established projects aimed at improving the materials and techniques. Private efforts served as models for federal programs instituted by New Deal administrators. Historian Jennifer McLerran details how federal officials developed programs such as the Southwest Range and Sheep Breeding Laboratory at Fort Wingate in New Mexico and the Navajo Arts and Crafts Guild. Other federal efforts included the publication of Native natural dye recipes; the publication of portfolios of weaving designs to guide artisans; and the education of consumers through the exhibition of weavings, aiding them in their purchases and cultivating an upscale market. McLerran details how government officials sought to use these programs to bring the Diné into the national economy; instead, these federal tactics were ineffective because they marginalized Navajo women and ignored the important role weaving plays in the resilience and endurance of wider Diné culture.
