He was born in 1932 in haripur, a small town in the north-western frontier province of present-day Pakistan. His love for the army developed from watching troops go by during World War II on grand trunk road, a road next to his house. When Partition happened, his family, like many others, went through the trauma which brought them back to India virtually destitute. The author joined the National defence Academy in 1949. He, unfortunately, lost his right eye in an accident happened at the national defence Academy. He in spite of the loss continued and thrived with his career. His display of courage to persevere through the rest of the service with one eye speaks volumes. He was a directing Staff at the defence services Staff college Wellington and describes his teaching tenure as enduring while meaningful. His love of adventure took him to Para trooping, mountaineering and also to volunteer for 1971 indo-pakistan war. His mountaineering experience gave him an extraordinary chance to lead a police expedition along up-tibet border. His inspiring and vivid description of the Wars, operation vijay(goa), in do -China war of 1962, and indo-pakistan war 1971 highlights the adventure and the profession knowledge he displays in dealing with difficult situations and explicit narration of events. Throughout his autobiography, the author depicts a very colourful journey giving insights about his courage in every aspect of his career. Due to his family circumstances, he resigned from the army as a Brigadier, at the height of his professional career. The author is extremely grateful to the Indian Army for providing wonderful opportunities and important life lessons.

Book excerpt: The Three S Factor was conceived, not as fiction, but as a memoir and fact file that narrates Col. Arun Parasar’s personal experiences in uniform, with special emphasis on three major operations: OP MEGHDOOT (Sia Chen), OP PAWAN (Sri Lanka) and OP UNOSOM II (Somali). He narrates his experiences in a very lucid manner for the understanding of the cross-section of society. He explains the vagaries of uniformed life, the good and bad moments, the requirements of winning hearts and minds of the local population in a counter-insurgency area and also conducting covert and overt operations. Hopefully, readers will enjoy reading about real-life adventures. Col. Arun Parasar wishes the readers a happy reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Age-old scholarly dogma holds that the death of serious theatre went hand-in-hand with the 'death' of the city-state and that the fourth century BC ushered in an era of theatrical mediocrity offering shallow entertainment to a depoliticised citizenry. The traditional view of fourth-century culture is encouraged and sustained by the absence of dramatic texts in anything more than fragments. Until recently, little attention was paid to an enormous array of non-literary evidence attesting, not only the sustained vibrancy of theatrical culture, but a huge expansion of theatre throughout (and even beyond) the Greek world. Epigraphic, historiographic, iconographic and archaeological evidence indicates that the fourth century BC was an age of exponential growth in theatre. It saw: the construction of permanent stone theatres across and beyond the Mediterranean world; the addition of theatrical events to existing festivals; the creation of entirely new contexts for drama; and vast investment, both public and private, in all areas of what was rapidly becoming a major 'industry'. This is the first book to explore all the evidence for fourth century ancient theatre: its architecture, drama, dissemination, staging, reception, politics, social impact, finance and memorialisation.

Book excerpt: As a Canadian medical student, Karen Trollope-Kumar went to India to study social and preventive medicine and met a young pediatrician named Pradeep. His dream of working in the Himalayan foothills captured her imagination, and the man captured her heart. They married in a Hindu wedding ceremony and pledged to share a life of service and spiritual growth. In this poignant, heartwarming, and gently humorous memoir, Karen recounts an eleven-year chapter of their unusual lives. She and Pradeep worked as medical doctors in the Himalayas, first in a rural hospital and later in remote mountain villages. When disaster struck — an assassination, an earthquake, a political crisis — their ideals, their safety, and their relationship are put at risk. The Cloud Messenger is a story of adventure and idealism, culture and medicine, faith and love, and it raises enduring questions: How can we cross religious and cultural boundaries? What happens to our dreams in the face of danger and disillusionment? And when dreams diverge, when one spouse can no longer continue on a certain path, what path do we choose?

Book excerpt: Jack London: an American novelist, journalist, railroad hobo, gold prospector, sailor, poet, socialist, an oyster pirate, war correspondent, alcoholic, a rancher... This collection is trying to uncover who was this incredible charismatic author, what hides behind the adventurous life anecdotes he wrote about, what were his convictions, dreams and what were his darkest hours. Content: "The Road" is London's account of London's experiences as a hobo in the 1890s, during the worst economic depression the United States had experienced up to that time. "The Cruise of the Snark" chronicles London's sailing adventure in 1907 across the south Pacific in his ketch the Snark. Accompanying London on this voyage was his wife Charmian London and a small crew. "John Barleycorn" is an autobiographical account of Jack London dealing with his enjoyment of drinking and struggles with alcoholism. "The People of the Abyss" describes London's experiences about life in the East End of London in 1902. He wrote this first-hand account after living in the East End for several months, sometimes staying in workhouses or sleeping on the streets. "Martin Eden" is a novel about a young proletarian autodidact, former sailor, struggling to become a writer. Eden is a semi-autobiographical character, based on London himself. "The Mutiny of the Elsinore" - After death of the captain, the crew of a ship split between the two senior surviving mates. The novel is based on London's voyage around Cape Horn on the Dirigo. Short Stories: Tales of the Fish Patrol - As a 16 year old man, Jack London became a member of the California Fish Patrol. These are the stories drawn from his experiences in catching fish poachers. The Human Drift is a collection of short sketches, stories and essays, mostly concerning sailing and London's love for sea.
