Book excerpt: Fasten your seat belts because David Stukas, author of the riotously fun Someone Killed His Boyfriend and Going Down for the Count, is back with another wickedly entertaining outing featuring accidental sleuths Michael, Robert and Monette. This time, the trio are off to Palm Springs, where a rivalry between the world-famous White Party and the upstart Red Party is sizzling, turning the hottest circuit in town into a festival of murder. . . Mama said there'd be days like this. That's the refrain running through Robert's modest, Midwestern mind as he and Michael are driven to the home of party promoter Rex Gifford by the mogul's naked manservant, Vince. Never mind that the guy is sporting enough hardware in his not-so-software to be a human wind chime. Or that Michael's managed to join the mile-high club on the way down. Or that Rex's plan for a Red Party to rival the celebrated White Party has started an all-out war among the gay mafia controlling the circuit party world. At least the pool is heated, the décor is gorgeous, and they can hang out with Monette, who's in town for the Dinah Shore classic. But things aren't absolutely fabulous in paradise. Someone's moved up from sending threatening letters to Rex's T-Rex Productions to actually trying to kill him. It isn't long before Rex is found face-down in his lap pool, and the trio's vacation turns into a working one. With millions of dollars and exclusive party contracts at stake, anyone could be a suspect. But when another buff bod goes stiff, it's obvious that someone is determined to keep the Red Party from ever getting off the ground, and as the DJs start spinning, the world's cattiest sleuths are going to have to seriously work every bit of the nightlife just to stay one step ahead of a ruthless killer. . . In this third outrageous mystery from David Stukas, the bodies are bronzed, the one-liners are fast and furious, the tension is high, and the circuit life will never be the same again.

Book excerpt: When Clara Bishop, a struggling screenwriter-turned-tabloid journalist in Hollywood, is jilted by her philandering husband, she follows him to London, determined to win him back. Armed with only a glamorous wardrobe of vintage clothing inherited from her grandmother, a former film noir actress, Clara discovers that the clothes really do make the woman. Dressed to kill, she adopts a new femme fatale persona: confident, sexy and set on revenge. But on the road to retaliation, Clara discovers an unfinished film script that sheds light on her grandmother’s mysterious death years before. Then it happens: somehow, magically, her whole life is transported back in time, into a living, breathing film noir that reveals to Clara the potential to write her own ending.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Curtis J. Austin’s Up Against the Wall chronicles how violence brought about the founding of the Black Panther Party in 1966 by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale, dominated its policies, and finally destroyed the party as one member after another—Eldridge Cleaver, Fred Hampton, Alex Rackley—left the party, was killed, or was imprisoned. Austin shows how the party’s early emphasis in the 1960s on self-defense, though sorely needed in black communities at the time, left it open to mischaracterization, infiltration, and devastation by local, state, and federal police forces and government agencies. Austin carefully highlights the internal tension between advocates of a more radical position than the Panthers took, who insisted on military confrontation with the state, and those such as Newton and David Hilliard, who believed in community organizing and alliance building as first priorities. Austin interviewed a number of party members who had heretofore remained silent. With the help of these stories, Austin is able to put the violent history of the party in perspective and show that the “survival” programs, such as the Free Breakfast for Children program and Free Health Clinics, helped the black communities they served to recognize their own bases of power and ability to save themselves.

Book excerpt: "When Damon Tweedy first enters the halls of Duke University Medical School on a full scholarship, he envisions a bright future where his segregated, working class background will become largely irrelevant. Instead, he finds that he has joined a new world where race is front and center. When one of his first professors mistakes him for a maintenance worker, it is a moment that crystallizes the challenges he will face throughout his early career. Making matters worse, in lecture after lecture the common refrain for numerous diseases resounds, "More common in blacks than whites." In riveting, honest prose, Black Man in a White Coat examines the complex ways in which both black doctors and patients must navigate the difficult and often contradictory terrain of race and medicine. As Tweedy transforms from student to practicing physician, he discovers how often race influences his encounters with patients. Through their stories, he illustrates the complex social, cultural, and economic factors at the root of most health problems in the black community. These elements take on greater meaning when Tweedy finds himself diagnosed with a chronic disease far more common among black people. In this powerful, moving, and compassionate book, Tweedy deftly explores the challenges confronting black doctors, and the disproportionate health burdens faced by black patients, ultimately seeking a way forward to better treatment and more compassionate care.- For readers of Atul Gawande, Sandeep Jauhar, Pauline W. Chen, and Henrietta Lacks"--
