Book excerpt: Encyclopedia of Human Services and Diversity is the first encyclopedia to reflect the changes in the mission of human services professionals as they face today’s increasingly diverse service population. Diversity encompasses a broad range of human differences, including differences in ability and disability, age, education level, ethnicity, gender, geographic origin, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic class, and values. Understanding the needs and problems of Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, the deaf, the blind, the LGBT community, and many other groups demands an up-to-date and cutting-edge reference. This three-volume encyclopedia provides human services students, professors, librarians, and practitioners the reference information they need to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse population. Features: 600 signed entries are organized A-to-Z across three volumes. Entries, authored by key figures in the field, conclude with cross references and further readings. A Reader’s Guide groups related articles within broad, thematic areas, such as aging, community mental health, family and child services, substance abuse, etc. A detailed index, the Reader’s Guide, and cross references combine for search-and-browse in the electronic version. A helpful Resource Guide guides students to classic books, journals, and web sites, and a glossary assists them with the terminology of the field. Available in both print and electronic formats, Encyclopedia of Human Services and Diversity is an ideal reference for students, practitioners, faculty and librarians.

Here's How to Change That: Did you know that the average millennial in the US is $36,000 in debt? Sound familiar? You've just gotten out of college and you're overwhelmed by student loan payments. Not only that, an entry-level job is keeping you from earning the money that would support the lifestyle you desire. So, what can you do about it? Is there any way to gain financial stability as early as in your 20s or 30s? Of course there is! And the answer happens to be a whole lot simpler than what you may imagine when thinking of saving and investing. For a start, you need to get out of debt asap. The longer you remain a part of the vicious cycle, the more difficult it is to get out of the debt swamp. You can be debt-free in your late 20s. To accomplish this goal, however, you'll need to do some financial growing up. Once you manage to kill the debt beast, you can move on to pursue all your life goals - saving enough to retire early, starting a family, buying a house, or starting your own business. Financial literacy consists of several simple, yet essential, concepts you'll need to master. In other words, you'll need to learn smart instead of hard when it comes to personal asset management. In Financial Literacy: How to Gain Financial Intelligence, Financial Peace and Financial Independence, you will discover: ● The 4 cardinal sins of youthful spending that will keep you in debt (forever) ● An 8-step, iron-clad methodology for getting out of debt in your 20s and 30s ● Smart ways to save money without having to give up your preferred lifestyle ● How to have fun and enjoy adventures for free, or with minimal spending ● 12+ brilliant ideas to earn more money (some have even been employed by top entrepreneurs for years) ● Reasons why no future dream is too big to pursue if you plan properly ● The basics of saving and investing like a boss while still a young adult ● The essence of financial responsibility in a marriage or a committed relationship ● Psychology of abundance: the mindset that sets millionaires apart from everybody else And much more! You don't have to wait until you're 40 to become financially independent. In fact, if you wait this long, it may be too late to introduce meaningful change in your life. Even if you earn a small income right now, you can take the baby steps that will add up and contribute to more security, more freedom, and a higher level of financial responsibility. It doesn't matter if you can save $5 or $1,000 per month. After all, a small trickle can quickly turn into a deluge. Do you want to become the master of your own money and your future? Are you looking forward to retiring in your 40s? If you're eager to learn the secrets of wealth and financial freedom, scroll up and click the "Add to Cart" button now.

Build up your money muscles with America's favorite finance coach. The Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency or more commonly known as Agensi Kaunseling dan Pengurusan Kredit (AKPK) was set up by Bank Negara Malaysia in April 2006. I feel truly honoured to lead this organization from its inception, which prioritizes on promoting personal financial literacy to all Malaysians.Over the last 26 months, approximately 50,000 individuals have sought the free credit counselling and debt manage- ment services of the agency. Our 40 odd counsellors from 9 locations nationwide have worked passionately to assist many of these distressed borrowers and help put them back on track with their finances.More than 50% of those who sought our assistance were below the age of 40. Many of them said that they got into financial trouble because they had low level of under- standing of basic financial literacy. This claim was further endorsed by the findings of a focus group study, done with 80 young working adult graduates in various disciplines, who had been working between 1 - 2 years. All these working adults agreed that early personal financial education is important and believe that if they had been taught personal financial education, they would be better able to manage their finances. These findings and real life encounters by our counsellors with financially-distressed young adults, made us to come out with 'Money $ense.'Money $ense aims to teach you skills on how to manage your money wisely so that you can spend within your means and achieve your financial goals with ease. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At one time, universities educated new generations and were a source of social change. Today colleges and universities are less places of public purpose, than agencies of personal advantage. Remaking the American University provides a penetrating analysis of the ways market forces have shaped and distorted the behaviors, purposes, and ultimately the missions of universities and colleges over the past half-century. The authors describe how a competitive preoccupation with rankings and markets published by the media spawned an admissions arms race that drains institutional resources and energies. Equally revealing are the depictions of the ways faculty distance themselves from their universities with the resulting increase in the number of administrators, which contributes substantially to institutional costs. Other chapters focus on the impact of intercollegiate athletics on educational mission, even among selective institutions; on the unforeseen result of higher education's "outsourcing" a substantial share of the scholarly publication function to for-profit interests; and on the potentially dire consequences of today's zealous investments in e-learning. A central question extends through this series of explorations: Can universities and colleges today still choose to be places of public purpose? In the answers they provide, both sobering and enlightening, the authors underscore a consistent and powerful lesson-academic institutions cannot ignore the workings of the markets. The challenge ahead is to learn how to better use those markets to achieve public purposes.
