Book excerpt: Abstract: We study the spin-field and the spin-spin entanglement in the ground state of a spin-orbit coupled Bose–Einstein condensate. It is found that the spin-field and the spin-spin entanglement can be induced by the spin-orbit coupling. By mapping the system to the Dicke-like model, the system exhibits a quantum phase transition from a normal (spin balanced) phase to superradiant (spin polarized) phase. The Dicke-like phase transition can be captured by the spin-field and the spin-spin entanglement arising from the spin-orbit coupling. The spin-field and the spin-spin entanglement increase as the Raman coupling increases in the superradiant phase, while they decrease with the Raman coupling increasing in the normal phase. We also consider the effect of a finite detuning on these entanglement show that the presence of the detuning suppresses the spin-field and the spin-spin entanglement.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The ground states of two-component miscible Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) confined in a rotating annular trap are obtained by using the Thomas–Fermi (TF) approximation method. The ground state density distribution of the condensates experiences a transition from a disc shape to an annulus shape either when the angular frequency increases and the width and the center height of the trap are fixed, or when the width and the center height of the trap increase and the angular frequency is fixed. Meantime the numerical solutions of the ground states of the trapped two-component miscible BECs with the same condition are obtained by using imaginary-time propagation method. They are in good agreement with the solutions obtained by the TF approximation method. The ground states of the trapped two-component immiscible BECs are also given by using the imaginary-time propagation method. Furthermore, by introducing a normalized complex-valued spinor, three kinds of pseudospin textures of the BECs, i.e., giant skyrmion, coaxial double-annulus skyrmion, and coaxial three-annulus skyrmion, are found.

Book excerpt: Abstract: We consider the ground-state properties of a rotating spin-orbit-coupled Bose—Einstein condensate under extreme elongation in a harmonic plus quartic potential. The effects of spin-orbit coupling and rotation on the ground-state vortex structures are investigated. In the absence of spin-orbit coupling, new nucleated vortices gradually form vortex lines and annular vortex structures with the increase of the rotation frequency. In the presence of spin-orbit coupling, part of the vortices arrange in a line and form a stable vortex chain, and the remanent vortices coexist in pairs aside such vortex chain. More specially, the remanent vortices of each component repel each other and form vortex pair for isotropic spin-orbit coupling, while attract each other and locate in the same positions for anisotropic spin-orbit coupling.

Book excerpt: In the present work the ground state energy of two weakly coupled Bose Einstein condensates separated by double well potential is estimated in three dimensions. By solving three dimensional time independent Gross Pitaevskii equation wave function, density, kinetic energy, potential energy, self energy and total energy of the Bose-Einstein condensates in double well potential have been studied. All these various quantities are also numerically calculated by using Thomas-Fermi Approximation (TFA). It is found that at small number of condensate atoms (N) in the trap, the results obtained from these two methods are quite different but when number of condensate atoms in the trap goes on increasing, the values calculated by using TFA is closer and closer to that obtained from the numerical calculation method. When the value of N is increased, tunneling current in TFA begins to appear and coherent splitting of matter waves starts to be affected. Hence for sufficiently larger value of N, there is "Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking." Further we have numerically calculated the first excited state wave function, density, kinetic energy, potential energy, self energy and total energy.

Book excerpt: In this work we build a new spin-orbit coupling experiment to observe the supersolidlike stripe phase. The phase diagram of a 1-dimensional spin-orbit coupled Bose- Einstein condensate shows several interesting phases including the stripe phase. We find the stripe phase particularly interesting because the condensate develops a density modulation in free space while remaining superfluid, which are the signature of supersolidity. In order to observe the stripe phase, we develop a novel spin-j basis which uses the orbital bands of an optical superlattice. Our choice of pseudo-spin basis allows the condensate components to remain miscible at high enough spin-orbit coupling strengths to observe the stripe phase. The superlattice constitutes a chain of spins which develop an antiferromagnetic spin texture and a density modulation at twice the lattice spacing. Breaking the discrete translational symmetry of the lattice while maintaining superfluidity indicates the formation of a lattice supersolid which we detected with Bragg scattering. Finally, the density modulation of the stripe phase is measured with a Bragg reflected beam and a camera setup to resolve the angular spread of the beam. An angle resolved, coherent Bragg beam is direct evidence of the stripe phase density modulation in free space. The formation of a free space density modulation in a superfluid Bose-Einstein condensate breaks the continuous spatial translation symmetry of space; fulfilling the definition of supersolidity. My primary contributions to the work include: controlling the superlattice, designing and building the Bragg detection scheme, some data collection and analysis.
