Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A soldier with the German Army’s Wallonian Legion chronicles his experience as a foreign volunteer for the Nazi war machine during WWII. A french-speaking Belgian, Fernand Kaisergruber volunteered to fight with the military force that occupied his country. His detailed chronicle of that time reads like a travelogue of the Eastern Front campaign. Until recently, very little was known of the tens of thousands of foreign nationals who fought with the Germans. Kaisergruber’s book sheds light on issues of collaboration, the experiences and motives of volunteers, and the reactions they encountered in occupied countries. Kaisergruber draws upon his wartime diaries, those of his comrades, and his later work with them while secretary of their postwar veteran's league. Although unapologetic for his service, Khemakes no special claims for the German cause. He writes instead from his firsthand experience as a young man entering war for the first time. His narrative is full of observations of fellow soldiers, commanders, Russian civilians, and battlefields.

Book excerpt: 'The Reckoning is vivid history, the tragic Eastern Front brought to life through the widest range of Russian and German sources I've ever read. Bravo.' – Peter Caddick-Adams, author and broadcaster From critically acclaimed Eastern Front expert Prit Buttar, The Reckoning is a masterful re-evaluation of the fateful year of 1944, and how the Red Army irrevocably turned the tide of war until the final defeat within the heart of Germany itself was guaranteed. The fighting throughout the Ukraine and Romania was brutal, with the German defence dogged and desperate. But for too long the Wehrmacht had relied on the superior combat prowess of its fighting men. What had not been taken into account, however, was that the Red Army would not only rely on its sheer size, but would fine-tune its fighting performance from its senior commanders right down to the individual soldier battling both fear and the elements to take each line, each trench, each inch of land. Ultimately it is a story not of how the Germans lost, as is all too often told, but of how the Russians increasingly learned how to win.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Bobby Fischer gets up, tall, overweight, and slightly clumsy. He tries to fulfil the duties of the host and shakes hands, but his nervously darting eyes betray his unease with the situation. This is not a man accustomed to receiving visitors.’ Dirk Jan ten Geuzendam’s gripping encounter with the legendary American recluse, a journalist’s dream come true, is the worthy apotheosis of this unique collection of interviews which were first published in New In Chess between 1986 and 1992. Why did Kasparov think Fischer was an alien? How many stamps does Karpov have? Was it really Caruso who appeared in Smyslov’s dream to teach him how to sing? Brimming with anecdotes and revealing insights these interviews bring together chess champions of past and present. Meet legends like Botvinnik, Gligoric, Portisch and Spassky or modern stars like Anand, Kramnik, and Judit Polgar. Different as they are, they all seem to ask Ten Geuzendam the favourite question of the inimitable Miguel Najdorf: ‘Do you want to hear a beautiful story?’ A classic collection, finally available again.

Book excerpt: This is the true but incredible story of the survival of the Finn, Olavi Veltheim, in Soviet Russia and how his experiences in this "e;land of dreams"e; turned into a nightmare. A civil war was raging in Finland, and one of Veltheim's brothers was fighting on the side of the Reds and the other on the side of the Whites. Olavi's disability meant that he was unfit for combat and had no future. He left for England to study shipping, was taken on by the Anglo-Russian company, Arcos, and shortly thereafter married an Englishwoman. When the British authorities refused Olavi a visa and he was unwilling to return to Finland, the Soviet Union offered the family the chance of a new life free of "e;exploitation."e; But the reality of this promise was not what they expected. The family lived in poverty and could not find work. Conditions worsened further, and eventually culminated in Lubyanka prison and the suffering of the labour camps in the Urals and Siberia which lasted for 6 long years before his repatriation. Olavi Veltheim's memoirs are a unique archive find. The book was originally published as a Dutch translation entitled De avonturen van een Finn in Sovjet-Rusland (Amsterdam 1939). Olavi Veltheim destroyed the original manuscript at the end of the Continuation War between Finland and the Soviet Union in 1944, and it was only through the re-discovery of the Dutch version in the 1980s and its re-translation into Finnish that it is now appearing in an English edition for a much wider world readership.
