Book excerpt: It is well known that individualism and consumerism are so pervasive that they have become the spectacles through which we view and understand our lives, including our spirituality. Sadly we keep these glasses on as we read our Bibles, and in the process we allow our reading to reinforce our individualism. Many readers and expositors of the Bible take verses without due concern for their context. In the process, verses that were originally intended to be understood within a community setting are made to mean something different from what their authors intended. One of the most serious consequences is that passages which refer to our community life are made to reinforce our individualism. This is not handling the 'Word of Truth' correctly. In We Not Me Andy Matheson argues that we need to embrace the perspective of 'the God who sees'. His vision is relational; he sees with communal lenses. Community is so core to God's nature and purposes that it undergirds everything that is implicitly inferred or explicitly stated on every page of the Bible. If we can rediscover what it means to be a community - the kind of community where all barriers are broken down and where our lives reflect the original vision of the gospel - then we play a much more effective part in ushering in God's Kingdom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technologies such as direct-to-consumer genetic testing, pharmacogenetically developed therapies in cancer care, private umbilical cord blood banking, and neurocognitive enhancement claim to cater to an individual's specific biological character, and, in some cases, these technologies have shown powerful potential. Yet in others they have produced negligible or even negative results. Donna Dickenson examines the economic and political factors fueling the Me Medicine phenomenon and explores how, over time, this paradigm shift in how we approach our health might damage our individual and collective well-being. Drawing on the latest findings from leading scientists, social scientists, and political analysts, she critically examines four possible hypotheses driving the Me Medicine moment: a growing sense of threat; a wave of patient narcissism; corporate interests driving new niche markets; and the dominance of personal choice as a cultural value. She concludes with insights from political theory that emphasize a conception of the commons and the steps we can take to restore its value to modern biotechnology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the centuries men and women have had to choose which way to go in their lives; "will I do it my way or will I do it God's way." One of the greatest responsibilities in man's and a woman's life is to bring up their children in the Lord; and teach them to reverence the One True God, to believe and trust Him. The world also offers many ways to live life, to raise children and to prosper. This book is a not a book about my way; this book is a book about God's way. To the best of my ability these chapters are right from God's heart straight to his family. God is loving, tender, merciful and forgiving. He is gently calling everyone to his family. What is our response? Do we follow Him or do we go our own way? The choice is up to us. Keith Daniels is a father, a teacher and a Christian author. His major in college was history. He is a retired U.S. Navy veteran of the submarine service. He has spent over 30 years of his life doing biblical research including analyzing the historical background of the first century church. He spends most of the year in Rhode Island and the majority of his summers in Maine. He and his wife Diana have ten-year-old triplets; William, Stuart and Elena. He attends home bible fellowships, spends time as a workman of the word and shares what he learns. He prays daily both in the spirit and with his understanding also. The power of God is manifested in his life and in his service. His motto is "Trust God." If you have any questions about the contents of this book, you can contact him at [email protected].

Book excerpt: "Me-We" Wins is about women discovering who God created them to be, their inner "Me," and improving their lives reflectively. This process involves pulling back the many layers women have developed to hide/protect their "Me" from the potential pain of being vulnerable in their "We" relationships. She is forced to hide her "Me" and yet function daily as a partner of her "We" relationships in families, friendships, careers, marriages, and interactions with God. Each chapter addresses the various issues that may arise in the relationships and the positive versus negative reactions of her "Me." A workbook is included to help you personally connect and explore the details outlined in each chapter. At the onset of the book, we explore who your "Me" is by identifying talents, gifts, and godly desires, as well as the negative distractions interfering with your "Me," evolving into all she was created to become. The focus is on discovering and enjoying your "Me" and, in turn, getting to know God as your creator. This book is a tool for women desiring to live their best life through the self-discovery of their internal, God-given power enabling them to win as "Me" and as a partner in "We."

Book excerpt: Winner of the 2016 NAGC Curriculum Studies Award In I, Me, You, We: Individuality Versus Conformity, students explore essential questions such as “How does our environment shape our identity? What are the consequences of conforming to a group? When does social conformity go too far?” This unit, developed by Vanderbilt University’s Programs for Talented Youth and aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), includes a major emphasis on rigorous evidence-based discourse through the study of common themes across rich, challenging nonfiction and fictional texts. The unit guides students to examine the fine line of individuality versus conformity through the related concepts of belongingness, community, civil disobedience, questioning the status quo, and self-reliance by engaging in creative activities, Socratic seminars, literary analyses, and debates. Lessons include close-readings with text-dependent questions, choice-based differentiated products, rubrics, formative assessments, and ELA tasks that require students to analyze texts for rhetorical features, literary elements, and themes through argument, explanatory, and prose-constructed writing. Ideal for pre-AP and honors courses, the unit features short stories from Kurt Vonnegut and Ray Bradbury, poetry from Emily Dickinson and Maya Angelou, art by M. C. Escher and Pablo Picasso, and primary source documents from Plato, Eleanor D. Roosevelt, William Bradford, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Henry David Thoreau. Grades 6-8
