Morris provides many personal and amusing insights into the making of such films as Moulin Rouge, Moby Dick, The Man Who Would Be King, Lolita, The Guns of Navarone, The Hill, and Oliver!" He has many stories to tell about the legendary producer David O. Selznick who battered him with his infamous memos throughout the making of Stazione Termini, Beat the Devil, and A Farewell to Arms. Additionally, Morris describes technical revelations about making films in the predigital era, including groundbreaking innovations and camera tricks." "Morris also writes about his early life and describes his Royal Air Force exploits in World War II, during which he won the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Force Cross. His personal accounts of death-defying sorties in bombers over enemy territory make thrilling reading."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communicate more effectively about science—by taking a page from Hollywood and improving your storytelling skills. Ask a scientist about Hollywood, and you’ll probably get eye rolls. But ask someone in Hollywood about science, and they’ll see dollar signs: Moviemakers know that science can be the source of great stories, with all the drama and action that blockbusters require. That’s a huge mistake, says Randy Olson: Hollywood has a lot to teach scientists about how to tell a story—and, ultimately, how to do science better. With Houston, We Have a Narrative, he lays out a stunningly simple method for turning the dull into the dramatic. Drawing on his unique background, which saw him leave his job as a working scientist to launch a career as a filmmaker, Olson first diagnoses the problem: When scientists tell us about their work, they pile one moment and one detail atop another moment and another detail—a stultifying procession of “and, and, and.” What we need instead is an understanding of the basic elements of story, the narrative structures that our brains are all but hardwired to look for—which Olson boils down, brilliantly, to “And, But, Therefore,” or ABT. At a stroke, the ABT approach introduces momentum (“And”), conflict (“But”), and resolution (“Therefore”)—the fundamental building blocks of story. As Olson has shown by leading countless workshops worldwide, when scientists’ eyes are opened to ABT, the effect is staggering: suddenly, they’re not just talking about their work—they’re telling stories about it. And audiences are captivated. Written with an uncommon verve and enthusiasm, and built on principles that are applicable to fields far beyond science, Houston, We Have a Narrative has the power to transform the way science is understood and appreciated, and ultimately how it’s done.

Book excerpt: APOLLO 13: Houston We Have A Problem - The True Story of the Apollo 13 Disaster Those that are familiar with Apollo 13 know that it was the seventh installment of the Apollo space program. It was classified as a manned mission by NASA as well as the third mission with the intention of landing on the moon, though it never actually succeeded in the lunar landing as it was aborted due to an oxygen tank explosion. On April 11th of 1970, the Apollo 13 craft was sent to launch at 13:13 CST, or 19:13 UTC. It originated from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The incident that caused its mission to fail happened two days into the endeavor, and it crippled the Service Module. This was vitally important for the proper functioning of the Command Module. Other hardships that had to be battled during flight included loss of cabin heat, a limited supply of power, a critical need for makeshift repairs to the system that removed carbon dioxide from the craft, and a shortage of potable water. Despite all of these things, the crew was able to safely return to Earth six days after they launched, on the 17th of April. This is the incredible story of the Apollo 13 disaster, and the breathtaking, miraculous turnaround that saw the entire crew return safe and well.

Math touches everything we do; It's what makes the world make sense. Using the mathematician's methods and hard-won insights-minus the jargon-professor and popular columnist Jordan Ellenberg guides general readers through his ideas with rigor and lively irreverence, infusing everything from election results to baseball to the existence of God and the psychology of slime molds with a heightened sense of clarity and wonder. Armed with the tools of mathematics, we can see the hidden structures beneath the messy and chaotic surface of our daily lives. How Not to Be Wrong shows us how--Publisher's description.

Combining the long-term interests of business, community, and the natural world, the resulting sustainable business reformation is unlike any previous human endeavor. The book deftly synthesizes a diverse collection of movement components, including some original concepts, and provides a single comprehensive and definitive source for understanding the emerging and complex phenomenon of sustainable business.
