Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The feasibility of a symmetrical, high-power, four-port, waveguide, junction circulator for operation at S band was demonstrated. Both H-plane and E-plane configurations were studied. The ferrites utilized in the circulators were polycrystalline yttrium-iron-garnet (YIG) materials doped with gadolinium (Gd), aluminum (Al), and dysporosium (Dy) in various combinations. In addition, various loading techniques and metallic center posts were evaluated. Single- and double-disk geometries were used with a magnetizing field applied along the ferrite axis in each design. The H-plane configuration has an insertion loss slightly above 1.0 dB, is power-limited at approximately 600 kW peak, 600 watts average, is physically larger than the E-plane design, and requires a comparatively large biasing field. The E-plane configuration can handle a greater amount of power, is lighter and more compact, operates with a lower biasing field, and the insertion loss is approximately 0.5 dB. High-power operation at 1.0 MW peak, 1.0 kW average was achieved. (Author).

Book excerpt: This book collects much of Helszajn's work (formerly, Heriot-Watt University) and includes closed-form and finite element calculations of the propagation constant, attenuation and mode spectrum for the ridge waveguide, and power-current and power-voltage definitions of impedance. Circular polarization is also treated. Propagation properties where the waveguide has a dielectric filler are calculated. The treatment is then extended to more complex designs, including quadruple ridge waveguides with and without a gyromagnetic filler. The text includes descriptions of many of the passive devices which can be realized using these waveguides, including isolators, phase shifters, and circulators. c. Book News Inc.

Book excerpt: Advances in Microwaves, Volume 6 is a three-chapter text that explores the fundamental principles of precision coaxial connectors, traveling wave tubes, and junction circulators. Chapter 1 discusses the significant developments in the design, accuracy, and reference standard lines of precision coaxial connectors, with an emphasis on the application of the 7-mm and 14-mm precision coaxial connectors. Chapter 2 examines the stability of strongly modulated beams in a variety of focusing systems, such as uniform magnetic fields (Brillouin and near-Brillouin flow), linearly tapered magnetic fields, and periodic-permanent-magnet field systems. Chapter 3 deals with the theoretical aspects and characteristics of all types of junction circulators, with an emphasis on the lumped-element and the stripline circulator. Discussions on a theorem on passive three-port networks and star and delta networks are covered in the supplementary texts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stripline circulator theory and applications from the world's foremost authority The stripline junction circulator is a unique three-port non-reciprocal microwave junction used to connect a single antenna to both a transmitter and a receiver. Its operation relies on the interaction between an electron spin in a suitably magnetized insulator with an alternating radio frequency magnetic field. In its simplest form, it consists of a microwave planar gyromagnetic resonator symmetrically coupled by three transmission lines. This book explores the magnetic interaction involved in the stripline circulator's operation, the nature of the microwave resonator shape, and the network problem that arises in coupling the microwave resonator to the microwave circuit. The stripline circulator is an important device met across a wide range of industries, including wireless, military, radar, and satellite communications. The book's design tables are a unique feature, offering valuable design support. Written by an international authority on non-reciprocal microwave circuits and devices, the book is organized into logical blocks of chapters that focus on specific effects and circuit aspects of the stripline circulator. Among the highlights of coverage are: Spatial shape demagnetizing factors of magnetic insulators Standing wave solutions of wye gyromagnetic planar resonators Lumped element circulators Negative permeability tracking and semi-tracking circulators Four-port single-junction circulators Fabrication of very weakly and weakly magnetized microstrip circulators The final chapter explores important and continuing discrepancies between theoretical models and actual practice. For designers building circulators, isolators, and phase shifters; researchers working on the limitation of ferrite devices; and graduate students intending to work in the field, Dr. Helszajn's insights and perspectives are invaluable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 3-port H-plane waveguide junction loaded coaxially with various combinations of dielectric and magnetized ferrite cylinders has been analyzed. Using the first 3 modes (n = 0, + or - 1) in the junction, computer programs have been written to evaluate their performance over the waveguide bandwidth. Qualitatively, measured and predicted behavior agree well. For a homogeneous ferrite rod the circulation frequency, f sub o increases as 4piM sub s and internal static field increase and permittivity decreases. These opposing effects also occur when 4piM sub s and epsilon sub r are radially inhomogeneous, but the magnitudes of the effects are functions of position. Reduction of ferrite volume produces an improvement in performance in some structures, and high power applications are suggested. With a thin conducting pin down the center of the ferrite, bandwidths of 40-50% are predicted in X-, C- and S-bands and details of these structures are given. Central pin tolerances are discussed. In some structures without the pin, higher order modes apparently cause discrepancies between theory and experiment, and these are briefly discussed. Complete details are given of two of the computer programs, and the problem of automatic optimization of design is briefly discussed. (Author).

Book excerpt: Up-to-date coverage of the analysis and applications of coplanar waveguides to microwave circuits and antennas The unique feature of coplanar waveguides, as opposed to more conventional waveguides, is their uniplanar construction, in which all of the conductors are aligned on the same side of the substrate. This feature simplifies manufacturing and allows faster and less expensive characterization using on-wafer techniques. Coplanar Waveguide Circuits, Components, and Systems is an engineer's complete resource, collecting all of the available data on the subject. Rainee Simons thoroughly discusses propagation parameters for conventional coplanar waveguides and includes valuable details such as the derivation of the fundamental equations, physical explanations, and numerical examples. Coverage also includes: Discontinuities and circuit elements Transitions to other transmission media Directional couplers, hybrids, and magic T Microelectromechanical systems based switches and phase shifters Tunable devices using ferroelectric materials Photonic bandgap structures Printed circuit antennas
