Book Synopsis Repair and Rehabilitation of Dams by : James E. McDonald
Download or read book Repair and Rehabilitation of Dams written by James E. McDonald and published by Washington, D.C. : U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Engineer Research and Development Center. This book was released on 1999 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was conducted to identify methods that have been used in the repair and rehabilitation of concrete dams. Information was obtained through literary searches, discussions with project personnel, and visits to project sites. Each case history includes a background of the project, the deficiency that necessitated repair or rehabilitation, and descriptions of materials and methods used in the repair or rehabilitation. When available, the cost of the repair project and the performance of the repair to date have been included. Case histories included in this report cover a range of deficiencies in concrete structures, including cracking, spalling, erosion, leakage, inadequate PMF capacity, expansion resulting from alkali-aggregate reaction, instability, and insufficient storage capacity.

Book Synopsis Fish passage technologies : protection at hydropower facilities. by :
Download or read book Fish passage technologies : protection at hydropower facilities. written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1995 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this report is technologies for fish passage around hydropower generation facilities and protection against entrainment and turbine mortality. Emphasis is given to Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)-licensed hydropower projects where fish protection is a subject of controversy and congressional interest due to the Federal Power Act (FPA) and the Electric Consumers Protection Act (ECPA). Thus institutional issues related to FERC-relicensing are also discussed. (Major points of controversy are high-lighted in box 1.1).

Book Synopsis Waterpower in Lowell by : Patrick M. Malone
Download or read book Waterpower in Lowell written by Patrick M. Malone and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2009-11-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, 2010 Peter Neaverson Award, Association for Industrial Archaeology Patrick M. Malone demonstrates how innovative engineering helped make Lowell, Massachusetts, a potent symbol of American industrial prowess in the 19th century. Waterpower spurred the industrialization of the early United States and was the principal power for textile manufacturing until well after the Civil War. Industrial cities therefore grew alongside many of America’s major waterways. Ideally located at Pawtucket Falls on the Merrimack River, Lowell was one such city—a rural village rapidly transformed into a booming center for textile production and machine building. Malone explains how engineers created a complex canal and lock system in Lowell which harnessed the river and powered mills throughout the city. James B. Francis, arguably the finest engineer in 19th-century America, played a key role in the history of Lowell’s urban industrial development. An English immigrant who came to work for Lowell’s Proprietors of Locks and Canals as a young man, Francis rose to become both the company’s chief engineer and its managing executive. Linking Francis’s life and career with the larger story of waterpower in Lowell, Malone offers the only complete history of the design, construction, and operation of the Lowell canal system. Waterpower in Lowell informs broader understanding of urban industrial development, American scientific engineering, and the environmental impacts of technology. Its clear and instructional discussions of hydraulic technology and engineering principles make it a useful resource for a range of courses, including the history of technology, urban history, and American business history.

Book Synopsis Flow-Induced Pulsation and Vibration in Hydroelectric Machinery by : Peter Dörfler
Download or read book Flow-Induced Pulsation and Vibration in Hydroelectric Machinery written by Peter Dörfler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-28 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1970’s, an increasing amount of specialized research has focused on the problems created by instability of internal flow in hydroelectric power plants. However, progress in this field is hampered by the interdisciplinary nature of the subject, between fluid mechanics, structural mechanics and hydraulic transients. Flow-induced Pulsation and Vibration in Hydroelectric Machinery provides a compact guidebook explaining the many different underlying physical mechanisms and their possible effects. Typical phenomena are described to assist in the proper diagnosis of problems and various key strategies for solution are compared and considered with support from practical experience and real-life examples. The link between state-of the-art CFD computation and notorious practical problems is discussed and quantitative data is provided on normal levels of vibration and pulsation so realistic limits can be set for future projects. Current projects are also addressed as the possibilities and limitations of reduced-scale model tests for prediction of prototype performance are explained. Engineers and project planners struggling with the practical problems will find Flow-induced Pulsation and Vibration in Hydroelectric Machinery to be a comprehensive and convenient reference covering key topics and ideas across a range of relevant disciplines.
Book Synopsis Water Power Engineering, 2nd Edition by : Dandekar M.M. & Sharma K.N.
Download or read book Water Power Engineering, 2nd Edition written by Dandekar M.M. & Sharma K.N. and published by Vikas Publishing House. This book was released on with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a comprehensive account of an important sector of engineering—the hydro-power—that is renewable and potentially sustainable. It covers the entire scope of the subject in a lucid manner starting from the fundamentals of hydrology, to various hydraulic and civil structures to electrical and mechanical equipment as required for hydro-power projects. Many new issues and challenges voiced in the energy sector in general and water power in particular during the last decade have been addressed in the book. Recent innovations and developments in some areas like wave power, and new technologies in hydraulic structures, like the P-K weirs, fuse gates, stepped spillways, CFRD, RCC, etc., find place suitably in the book. The book is meant for undergraduate and postgraduate students of civil and electrical engineering and for the professionals interested in the subject. NEW IN THE SECOND EDITION ? Thoroughly rewritten text; takes account of the new and growing technology, including • New types of dams, sedimentation of reservoirs, rehabilitation of dams • Spillway design floods, new types of spillways • Mathematical models for rainfall-runoff analysis, including contribution of snowfall • Structural components of tidal plants, and new types of turbines • Wave power exploitation ? Detailed study on Sardar Sarovar and Tehri projects ? Fully updated with the latest data, up to 2013 ? Two new chapters on 'small-scale hydro, and 'environmental impact of hydro and multi-purpose projects’
