Book excerpt: Evelyn's riveting and impeccable-timed message exposes seeds of faith and deeds of darkness. Evelyn's teaching hits the nail on the head as she exposes Satan in every church. Don't think this applies to you? This is a must-read book for everyone, especially church leaders and prayer groups. Your life will never be the same if you heed the wisdom in this book. Evelyn shows that the church has nothing to prove and has no need to pretend. Evelyn leaves no hiding place for the enemy. She shines the light on Satan's territorial cracks and crevices. Many church wolves posing as sheep will have to change clothes! Dr. Drayton describes in poignant details how to become one who prays instead of one who preys. With simplicity, she shares the arena of truth using a cut melon and the heart of man. Come and share with Evelyn her "Watermelon Faith." Evangelist Evelyn Murray Drayton, an ordained minister and Christian author, earned a Masters Degree in Theology and a Doctorate Degree in Christian Counseling from Cathedral Bible College in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Evelyn is an excellent leader and motivational speaker who helps spearhead national and international ministries to help catapult them to the forefront. Her soothing, powerful, and prolific words have captured the hearts of many. Evelyn travels and ministers extensively proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She appears for live television and radio interviews. Evelyn is the author of four other published books. Her titles are I Had to Die Exposing Witchcraft in the Church, Silent Speaker, Feathered Wisdom, and Sweet Success After Bitter Defeat. Dr. Drayton, a community activist, is president and founder of Soul Winner Ministries, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to empower individuals and other organizations to help them reach their full potential.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a mission trip to Haiti in 2014, one of my many tasks was to distribute to local farmers some very special watermelon seeds. I was inspired and moved by the great desire and appreciation these subsistence Haitian farmers had for this meager allotment of seeds. These seeds were life! These seeds were hope! These seeds would bring food to their families, stability to their personal economy, meaning and purpose to their toil. And you better believe that they had prepared their soil. They had plowed the way for the seed to take root and be fruitful. How does the parable of the sower, seed, and soil from Matthew 13 speak to us today? God is the sower of all good seed but partners with us to help farm for the kingdom. I submit that the sowers of God's word could include those who share the word of God with humility and gratitude. They give witness to God's love and the truth of Jesus Christ with compassion, reason, confidence, and courage! They scatter seeds of the gospel and also help cultivate the soil that is our souls. They are not perfect but are genuine. They are those family members, friends, colleagues, strangers, ancestors, and fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, who have had a serendipitous part to play in our spiritual formation. I pray that Watermelon Seeds, in some modest way, will perhaps enlighten a deeper understanding, appreciation, and recognition for all those seed scatterers that come into our lives!

Book excerpt: Watermelon Magic is talk from the soul using watermelons as a metaphor for life. Watermelons symbolize the slurpy happiness of life for Wally Amos (formerly known as “Famous Amos”). From his life experiences, Wally sees many parallels between humans and watermelons. Just as the vine connects watermelons and the umbilical cord connects mother and child, we are all connected by spirit. Wally shares his personal path to wisdom and tells how he never lost his humor, joy, and positive outlook on life in the process. He shows us how to overcome adversity and make healthy choices—how to reframe and rethink challenging situations in positive, optimistic, and uplifting terms. A master storyteller, Wally believes we all have a choice in our own happiness—no matter who we are, no matter what we’ve been through—and his stories will touch you at the very depth of your soul. If these ideas and beliefs speak to you, grab them like slices of watermelon, devour them, and have fun! Look out for the seeds, and live life to the fullest!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We discover life as much with our hearts as with our heads. Personal experiences, relationships, and stories provide more effective media for investigating spiritual realities than any essay or scholarly treatise. That is precisely the gift that the ten contributors in this book have shared. Five of these contributors discuss how they have used faith to help others while five discuss how they have used faith to help themselves. HELPING OTHERS: Many of us wish that we could lead lives of service, and would prefer one day to leave the world a better place because we were in it. Perhaps reading the accounts of these peoples faith and service to others will open a place in your heart to follow suit. HELPING THEMSELVES: Many of us are on a quest for personal redemption. Abuse, compulsive behaviors, trauma, bad parenting, peer pressure, fear of death and a thousand other social pressures serve as albatrosses around our necks. The concluding chapters describe how five individuals discovered upward pathways towards the light through dark forces and circumstances in their lives. This is absolutely one book you must read. It will make you laugh, it will make your cry, it will give you inspiration.

Book excerpt: This collection bundles the entire 6 volumes of Lori Copeland’s popular Brides of the West series together in one e-book, for a great value! #1 Faith Best-selling author Lori Copeland kicks off this historical Western series with this pleasing tale of mail-order brides set in 1872. When their pastor father dies suddenly, leaving little money, three sisters realize that they need to take drastic action to survive. Each answers a newspaper ad soliciting Christian brides. Faith goes to Texas, where her intended, a well-to-do rancher named Nicholas Shepherd, seems to be having second thoughts. While her wedding is repeatedly postponed, Faith meets a local widower and decides to teach his blind son Braille. In time, Nicholas begins to realize that he may have lost Faith to another man. #2 June Lori Copeland continues her historical romance series, Brides of the West, with book 2, June. Mail-order bride June Kallahan arrives in Seattle from Michigan to discover that her intended, Eli Messenger, the assistant to a famous evangelist named Isaac Inman, is ill. After he dies, June stays on to work at the local orphanage, where she realizes Inman is allowing the orphans to go without in order to build a showy tabernacle. A romance blooms between June and Parker Sentell, a friend of Eli’s, as they try to convince Inman of the errors of his thinking. Readers will learn the important lesson that God is ever faithful, even when we don’t understand his plan or purpose in our lives. June delivers a lighthearted, entertaining story along with strong moral values and a Christian worldview. #3 Hope The best-selling Brides of the West series continues with book 3, Hope. Federal agent Dan Sullivan shelves his retirement to infiltrate a band of payroll thieves. But he didn’t expect to meet stubborn mail-order bride Hope Kallahan, who gets kidnapped by the gang and held for ransom, or that she would be a veritable magnet for danger. As she intimidates hardened criminals into cleaning house and talks Dan into rescuing her, Dan believes God had a reason for throwing her in his path. #4 Glory A sheltered mountain girl, Glory is forced to build a life on her own after her Poppy dies. With a bagful of gold and no change of clothes, she sets out in search of a new life. Far too naive for the cold world before her, she ends up on the run from a greedy uncle who wants her gold—and who will kill her to get it. She manages to latch on to a wagonneer named Jackson and a group of teenage mail order brides. In her travels and adventures, Glory grows into a beautiful young woman with an unshakable faith—but will her faith be enough to win the heart of the handsome wagonneer? #5 Ruth The continuing story of mail-order brides in the successful Brides of the West series. Spunky, young Ruth Priggish is on the run from an 80-year-old suitor. Her only hope of eluding him is to seek help from an unwilling protector, U.S. Marshall Dylan McCall. Copeland’s readers will delight in this rollicking story of romance and danger. #6 Patience In the continuing story of mail-order brides in the successful Brides of the West series, Patience is abducted in a case of mistaken identity. But everything changes when she escapes her kidnapper and stumbles onto a gold mine. Can Patience make her fortune without losing her heart to Sheriff Jay Longer? Copeland’s readers will delight in this rollicking story of romance and danger.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1 Corinthians 12:31, St. Paul exhorts the early Christians in Corinth to follow "a still more excellent way." The "way" he is speaking of is love-genuine, selfless love. For Paul, the ultimate meaning and perfect example of this love is found solely in the crucified, risen, and reigning Christ. With unwavering devotion, Paul's post-conversion life was focused on one goal: to point people to Jesus so they, too, could experience the unsurpassed joy that Paul himself had come to know through his Lord. A Still More Excellent Way encourages and inspires readers through fifty-two brief selections from Paul's writings. Each Scripture selection-short enough to be easily memorized-is followed by a story or meditation that supports the verses. And although the apostle Paul evangelized in the first-century Roman world, author Joseph Durepos uses plenty of twenty-first-century cultural references to make the material highly relevant for people today. Equally appropriate for personal reflection or small-group study, A Still More Excellent Way is an excellent opportunity for anyone to draw closer to Jesus through the unabashedly Christ-centered message of St. Paul.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MY HAUNTED FAITH is a spiritual memoir depicting the spiritual warfare Sherry endured, predominantly as a young adult. When Sherry is eighteen, she hears an angel speak to her, and the sporadic paranormal activity begins soon after. Sherry moves to another apartment with her husband Russ and their newborn; however, the paranormal activity increases. They move again, only to discover their new home is haunted. Sherry experiences a majority of the encounters. Voices and footsteps, unaccounted for, are heard frequently, and there are ghostly apparitions in her bedroom. In time, a terrifying ordeal leads to a confrontation with Satan. Realizing she will have to rid her home of these spirits on her own, she turns to her Bible for guidance. Sherry finds refuge in her Bible as she searches for her purpose in life. At the age of thirty-one, she begins nursing school. While in school, she wrestles with anxiety and depression, and an unresolved issue concerning her Baptism leads to an intense interaction with God. Sherry moves with her family to upstate New York, blessed with a nursing job and the farmhouse she and her husband prayed for. They raise their young children in the country while raising farm animals and experiencing the joy of God’s creation. Regrettably, Sherry finds intrigue in the supernatural again. Determined not to get involved in the paranormal, she draws closer to God. She begins her own Bible study at home and later becomes involved with a Ladies Bible Group. Sherry feels led to share her stories of spiritual warfare and her blessings. She reveals her understanding of how it has strengthened her and has readers reflect on their blessings while recognizing Satan’s influence in their own lives. She reinforces how one can overcome Satan’s influence by accepting Jesus in their life.

The little churches back then in the country, the parents would take a quilt into the church and make a pallet for their younger ones on the floor beneath the bench which they were sitting. One time, Mother and Daddy thought they woke one of my sisters up and assumed she went to the wagon. Without checking, we headed home and did not realize until we arrived home that she was not with us!Some of my earliest memories are of a two-room house with, of course, a dog run in the middle. Sleeping arrangements with a family of six children and my mother and daddy were quite interesting. Sometimes we were fortunate enough to have a featherbed, but more often, it was corn shucks in a mattress. One of the foods that stands out most in my memories were my mother's fried pies—dried fruit wrapped in a pastry circle fried in butter. I still can remember that taste, recipe included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While over the past decade a number of scholars have done significant work on questions of black lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered identities, this volume is the first to collect this groundbreaking work and make black queer studies visible as a developing field of study in the United States. Bringing together essays by established and emergent scholars, this collection assesses the strengths and weaknesses of prior work on race and sexuality and highlights the theoretical and political issues at stake in the nascent field of black queer studies. Including work by scholars based in English, film studies, black studies, sociology, history, political science, legal studies, cultural studies, and performance studies, the volume showcases the broadly interdisciplinary nature of the black queer studies project. The contributors consider representations of the black queer body, black queer literature, the pedagogical implications of black queer studies, and the ways that gender and sexuality have been glossed over in black studies and race and class marginalized in queer studies. Whether exploring the closet as a racially loaded metaphor, arguing for the inclusion of diaspora studies in black queer studies, considering how the black lesbian voice that was so expressive in the 1970s and 1980s is all but inaudible today, or investigating how the social sciences have solidified racial and sexual exclusionary practices, these insightful essays signal an important and necessary expansion of queer studies.
