Book excerpt: This report describes a model water tunnel built in 1928 to investigate the possibility of using water tunnels for aerodynamics investigations at large scales. The model tunnel is similar to an open-throat wind tunnel, but uses water for the working fluid. Results are given of tests of the tunnel and also of some observations made with model airfoils in the tunnel to study the phenomena of cavitation. It is concluded that a water tunnel does not offer a convenient method of making aerodynamic investigations at large scales. A large diameter water tunnel would be of value chiefly for use in the study of cavitation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wake of an airfoil which oscillates in pure plunge mode is investigated in a water tunnel over a wide range of reduced frequency and amplitude. The main focus of this study is the comparison of the experimentally determined wake geometry with numerical results from a potential flow code. The wake vortices are visualized by two-color dye injection and velocity profiles are measured with LDV upstream and downstream of the airfoil. Wake signatures are examined with regard to thrust or drag generation. There is a good agreement between calculated and experimental data of the vortical wavelength. At high plunge velocities both approaches show a loss of wake symmetry and the emergence of a dual mode wake behavior.

Book excerpt: The SwRI large water tunnel was modified by the addition of a large test section (.71 m x .81 m x 1.8 m long) to provide low Reynolds number flows with low blockage for models in a highly separated flow condition. Flow characteristics are documented and other physical features are described. The feasibility of conducting water tunnel experiments involving unsteady aero-hydrodynamics was demonstrated by performing a series of flow visualization studies on a oscillating airfoil (NACA 0012). This experiment was carried out at a reduced fully separated until 17 degress angle of attack, and the downstream wash of the separated flow occurred at 22 degrees. (mjm).

Book excerpt: The results of experiments in which a controlled region of flow separation was generated downstream of an oscillating fence-type spoiler located on one surface of an airfoil are discussed. The experiments were conducted in a low speed water tunnel under incompressible flow conditions over a wide range dimensionless frequencies and Reynolds numbers. High speed motion pictures and still photographs of hydrogen bubbles formed at surface mounted electrodes were used to obtain data regarding the shape and growth characteristics of the separation zone. Under certain conditions an energetic vortex-like structure was observed to form behind the spoiler and evolve in a manner determined by the Reynolds number and dimensionless frequency parameters. Observations of flow development reveal that the global structure of the separated region during the formation process is qualitatively similar to the one encountered in classical dynamic stall. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the aerodynamic features of oscillating and deforming airfoils with vertical axis wind turbine applications. An in-house large eddy simulation (LES) computational fluid dynamic code with the wall-adapting local eddy viscosity sub-grid scale model is used to perform simulations, first to replicate the results of a water tunnel experiment studying an oscillating airfoil, and second to analyze the effects of airfoil deformation on aerodynamic properties. The main features shown in the water tunnel experiments at a Reynolds number of 10,000 are present in the results of the simulations, including separation bubbles and laminar to turbulent transition, showing the effectiveness of using LES to simulate dynamic stall. The deformation of the airfoil's trailing edge is implemented using a spring-based mesh deformation method, showing the effects of this movement on the airfoil's pressure coefficient.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The physical principles of swimming and flying in animals are intriguingly different from those of ships and airplanes. The study of animal locomotion therefore holds a special place not only at the frontiers of pure fluid dynamics research, but also in the applied field of biomimetics, which aims to emulate salient aspects of the performance and function of living organisms. For example, fluid dynamic loads are so significant for swimming fish that they are expected to have developed efficient flow control procedures through the evolutionary process of adaptation by natural selection, which might in turn be applied to the design of robotic swimmers. And yet, sharply contrasting views as to the energetic efficiency of oscillatory propulsion – especially for marine animals – demand a careful assessment of the forces and energy expended at realistic Reynolds numbers. For this and many other research questions, an experimental approach is often the most appropriate methodology. This holds as much for flying animals as it does for swimming ones, and similar experimental challenges apply – studying tethered as opposed to free locomotion, or studying the flow around robotic models as opposed to real animals. This book provides a wide-ranging snapshot of the state-of-the-art in experimental research on the physics of swimming and flying animals. The resulting picture reflects not only upon the questions that are of interest in current pure and applied research, but also upon the experimental techniques that are available to answer them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low-speed aerodynamics is important in the design and operation of aircraft flying at low Mach number, and ground and marine vehicles. This 2001 book offers a modern treatment of the subject, both the theory of inviscid, incompressible, and irrotational aerodynamics and the computational techniques now available to solve complex problems. A unique feature of the text is that the computational approach (from a single vortex element to a three-dimensional panel formulation) is interwoven throughout. Thus, the reader can learn about classical methods of the past, while also learning how to use numerical methods to solve real-world aerodynamic problems. This second edition has a new chapter on the laminar boundary layer (emphasis on the viscous-inviscid coupling), the latest versions of computational techniques, and additional coverage of interaction problems. It includes a systematic treatment of two-dimensional panel methods and a detailed presentation of computational techniques for three-dimensional and unsteady flows. With extensive illustrations and examples, this book will be useful for senior and beginning graduate-level courses, as well as a helpful reference tool for practising engineers.
