Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main purpose of this book is to provide in-depth presentation of physical techniques for measuring water transport and their applications to a variety of biological membranes, from model membrane systems to cell membranes, and then from isolated cells to multicellular barrier systems, such as epithelia or even whole organisms. This survey of water transport in such a broad range of membrane systems will hopefully contribute to understanding of the structure-function relationships and molecular mechanisms of water permeation. Moreover, the description of various techniques, together with a review of literature will enable the readers to assess whether a technique would be useful in helping to solve his or her particular problem of research and will also expand their competence in these techniques. The book consists of two volumes.

Book excerpt: Water Relations in Membrane Transport in Plants and Animals contains the presentations in a symposium dealing with Water Relations in Membranes in Plants and Animals, during the 27th Annual Fall Meeting of the American Physiological Society held at The University of Pennsylvania, 17-19 August 1976. The purpose of the symposium was to explore the common modes of water regulation in plants and animals. In these proceedings, the mechanisms employed to restrict water flow across plant and metazoan animal cells are described. Putative differences in mechanisms of water regulation retained by plant versus animal cells become inconsequential in the light of the numerous similarities: dependence upon bioelectric potentials maintained across cell membranes, energy dependence of uphill water movement, and solute coupling during water transport. The presentations can be organized into four. The first takes up specific mechanisms of water transport in plants. The second and third parts deal with specific mechanisms in invertebrates and vertebrates, respectively. The fourth part covers generalized mechanisms common to plants and animals.

Book excerpt: A reissue of a classic book -- corrected, edited, typeset, redrawn, and indexed for the Biological Physics Series. Intended for undergraduate courses in biophysics, biological physics, physiology, medical physics, and biomedical engineering, this is an introduction to statistical physics with examples and problems from the medical and biological sciences. Topics include the elements of the theory of probability, Poisson statistics, thermal equilibrium, entropy and free energy, and the second law of thermodynamics. It can be used as a supplement to standard introductory physics courses, and as a text for medical schools, medical physics courses, and biology departments. The three volumes combined present all the major topics in physics. These books are being reissued in response to frequent requests to satisfy the growing need among students and practitioners in the medical and biological sciences with a working knowledge of the physical sciences. The books are also in demand in physics departments either as supplements to traditional intro texts or as a main text for those departments offering courses with biological or medical physics orientation.

Book excerpt: Plant Physiology: A Treatise, Volume IX: Water and Solutes in Plants explores problems associated with water and solutes of plants as they grow. This book considers water relations of plant cells, along with transpiration and water balance, the physiology of stomata, ion uptake by roots from the soil, and salt relations of plants. This volume is organized into seven chapters and begins with an introduction to the water potential terminology used by plant physiologists in describing the water relations of plant communities, individual plants and their organs, and plant cells. An account of the elastic properties and hydraulic conductivity of plant cell walls is provided. The following chapters focus on the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum, water uptake and movement through plants, the effects of water deficit on plant development and other processes, and the mechanics of stomatal functioning. The book also introduces the reader to salt relations of plant cells, tissues, and roots as well as long-distance transport in the phloem, and then concludes by discussing the solute composition of cells during development. This book is a valuable resource for teachers, research workers, and students with specific interest in plant physiology.

These technologies, along with the advent of tissue engineering, have propelled the challenges of tissue collection, preservation, and banking to the research forefront. Using examples drawn from reproductive technologies, Reproductive Tissue Banking presents the scientific principles underlying tissue banking. These examples serve as models for the technology of banking other living tissues, including blood, bone marrow, cornea, and skin. In discussing research emerging from their laboratories and those of others, the authors meld fundamentals of biology, chemistry, and physics with the latest discoveries in the field to give the reader profound insight into research directions and ethical considerations crucial to the advancement of tissue banking. With its emphasis on human applications and concerns, this book provides a valuable supplement to short courses on tissue preservation and tissue engineering. Researchers in reproductive medicine, animal and veterinary science, and cryobiology will find this book, with its extensive bibliography, a very handy reference. * * Written by leading international researchers* Provides insightful discussions on reproductive tissue banking* Presents comprehensive citations to relevant literature, both current and historic* Discusses in vitro preservation of spermatozoa, oocytes, embryos, and gonadal tissues of mammals* Contains coverage of ethical considerations from a discussion of the splitting of embryos to an exploration of the protection of biodiversity
