Book Synopsis Water Rights Reform by : Bryan Randolph Bruns
Download or read book Water Rights Reform written by Bryan Randolph Bruns and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rights to water are increasingly crucial and increasingly contested across theglobe. Urbanization, industrialization, environmental degradation, agriculturalintensification, rising per capita water use, increasing population, andother social, political, and economic transformations contribute to growing scarcity and demand for better management of water resources. In responding to these challenges, the world can draw on a rich heritage of institutions for regulating rights to water and resolving disputes, and a diversity of institutional arrangements that demonstrate great ingenuity in designing solutions to fit the conditions and priorities of various river basins. However, policy discussion in water management has often been impoverished by narrow polarization around a few idealized models of centrally integrated management or water commoditization, even though these comprise only a small and very incomplete subset of the institutional options available for effective management. The authors in this book expand the range of reflection and analysis of water rights reforms, offering insights aimed especially at those seeking practical pathways to improve equity, efficiency, and sustainability in access to water."

Book Synopsis Valuing Fisheries by : Torstein John Arneson Hundloe
Download or read book Valuing Fisheries written by Torstein John Arneson Hundloe and published by Univ. of Queensland Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans have been fishing for food and pleasure since time immemorial. Long before the development of powerful commercial fishing vessels, tribal communities sought fish and other marine life for food and ceremonial purposes. Today, there is a significant tourism sector around diving and snorkelling.Commercial and recreational fisheries often compete for the same fish stock. Together these two groups compete with those who wish to promote a 'look but don't take' attitude to fish. And in some cases, traditional indigenous fishers have special demands that can be inconsistent with the needs of other groups. The limited nature of fish stocks can lead to arguments between these different groups. Too often the arguments are based on a wrong use of economic data. Access to and sharing of fisheries resources need not necessarily be based on economic data and principles, but if they are, the proper approach must be used. This book sets out in clear language, with simple examples, the correct economic method to be used. The aim is to improve decision-making so that everyone can enjoy a seafood meal, drop a line in the water or observe fish in a natural environment without unnecessary conflict.

Book Synopsis Hydrology and Water Law - Bridging the Gap by : J. Wallace
Download or read book Hydrology and Water Law - Bridging the Gap written by J. Wallace and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2006-04-30 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With "integrated water resources management" (IWRM) the current buzzword in international circles, the real question is: how to operationalise a truly multidisciplinary approach to the effective management of shared watercourses. Based largely on the actual experience of HELP (Hydrology for the Environment, Life and Policy), the overall aim of the book is to produce a series of case studies from around the world (from the Aral Sea to Zimbabwe) that demonstrate how the "gaps" between hydrology, water law and management are actually bridged in practice. Is hydrological data relevant and used in the formulation of national and international water law and policy? Cases cited include examples of where this has happened and been successful or unsuccessful and where this has not happened and led to problems. This will act as a guide to how future water laws and polices can be made more effective via the use of accurate and up to date hydrological information.

Book Synopsis River Basin Restoration and Management by : A. Ostfeld
Download or read book River Basin Restoration and Management written by A. Ostfeld and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2005-02-01 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: River Basin Restoration and Management is the result of two workshops that took place at the 4th IWA World Water Congress: The Restoration of Degraded River Basins and River Basin Management Using Machine Learning. The Restoration of Degraded River Basins set out to share experience in the institutional, policy, and public participation elements of restoration programmes, the 'soft' issues surrounding restoration of a degraded river basin and the development of the river basin plan. The resulting papers include a number of case studies from a variety of river basins in Israel, South Africa, United Kingdom, Australia and Central Europe. The River Basin Management Using Machine Learning workshop highlighted and compared the two different approaches to watershed management: the physically based modelling approach relying on the system physics versus the data driven modelling approach based on exploring the system 'data behaviour'. The workshop was motivated by the recent rapid advance in information processing systems. These have pushed the hydrological research community to explore the possibilities of using intelligent systems aimed at automatically-evolving models of natural phenomena. This is the discipline of machine learning (ML), the study of computer algorithms that improve automatically through experience.

Book Synopsis Australia's Water Resources by : John Pigram
Download or read book Australia's Water Resources written by John Pigram and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2007-05-25 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia’s Water Resources seeks to explore the circumstances underpinning the profound reorientation of attitudes and relationships to water that has taken place in Australia in recent decades. The changing emphasis from development to management of water resources continues to evolve and is reflected in a series of public policy initiatives directed towards rational, efficient and sustainable use of the nation's water. Australia is now recognised as a pacesetter in water reform. Administrative restructuring, water pricing, water markets and trade, integrated water resources management, and the emergence of the private sector, are features of a more economically sound and environmentally compatible water industry. It is important that these changes are documented and their rationale and effectiveness explained. This timely work provides an important synthesis of these issues. This revised paperback edition is a fully corrected reprint of the hardback edition.
