Book excerpt: Coasts and Estuaries: The Future provides valuable information on how we can protect and maintain natural ecological structures while also allowing estuaries to deliver services that produce societal goods and benefits. These issues are addressed through chapters detailing case studies from estuaries and coastal waters worldwide, presenting a full range of natural variability and human pressures. Following this, a series of chapters written by scientific leaders worldwide synthesizes the problems and offers solutions for specific issues graded within the framework of the socio-economic-environmental mosaic. These include fisheries, climate change, coastal megacities, evolving human-nature interactions, remediation measures, and integrated coastal management. The problems faced by half of the world living near coasts are truly a worldwide challenge as well as an opportunity for scientists to study commonalities and differences and provide solutions. This book is centered around the proposed DAPSI(W)R(M) framework, where drivers of basic human needs requires activities that each produce pressures. The pressures are mechanisms of state change on the natural system and Impacts on societal welfare (including well-being). These problems then require responses, which are the solutions relating to governance, socio-economic and cultural measures (Scharin et al 2016). - Covers estuaries and coastal seas worldwide, integrating their commonality, differences and solutions for sustainability - Includes global case studies from leading worldwide contributors, with accompanying boxes highlighting a synopsis about a particular estuary and coastal sea, making all information easy to find - Presents full color images to aid the reader in a better understanding of details of each case study - Provides a multi-disciplinary approach, linking biology, physics, climate and social sciences

Book excerpt: Since the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis began its study of water quality modeling and management in 1977, it has been interested in the relations between uncertainty and the problems of model calibration and prediction. The work has focused on the theme of modeling poorly defined environmental systems, a principal topic of the effort devoted to environmental quality control and management. Accounting for the effects of uncertainty was also of central concern to our two case studies of lake eutrophication management, one dealing with Lake Balaton in Hungary and the other with several Austrian lake systems. Thus, in November 1979 we held a meeting at Laxenburg to discuss recent method ological developments in addressing problems associated with uncertainty and forecasting of water quality. This book is based on the proceedings of that meeting. The last few years have seen an increase in awareness of the issue of uncertainty in water quality and ecological modeling. This book is relevant not only to contemporary issues but also to those of the future. A lack of field data will not always be the dominant problem for water quality modeling and management; more sophisticated measuring techniques and more comprehensive monitoring networks will come to be more widely applied. Rather, the important problems of the future are much more likely to emerge from the enhanced facility of data processing and to concern the meaningful interpretation, assimilation., and use of the information thus obtained.

Book excerpt: [Truncated abstract] The Peel-Harvey Estuarine System is one of the most significant waterbird habitats in Australia. However, despite its ecological significance, a serious decline in the water quality characterises the system, requiring catchment-wide waterway protection and enhancement. Although point sources, such as intensive animal industries and urban development exist in the catchment, the majority of pollution originates from diffuse sources in the wider catchment. This requires that due attention is given to catchment controls and characteristics that define 'diffuse' sources. But targeting all sub-catchment areas equally has been shown to be neither cost-effective, nor likely to significantly reduce pollutant discharge. In this work, the drainage system, a combination of artificial and natural drainage lines, is treated as a stream network and classified into a series of management units, to which water quality threats can be attributed. The establishment of channel characteristics in the Peel- Harvey coastal catchment produced nine channel classes, which highlight how the water quality threat varies at differing catchment scales. The classification process has highlighted the distinct differences between sand-based and clay-based catchments. These differences relate to both the functioning and stability of the channels, but also to the type of pollutants and the way these pollutants are entrained, stored and move through the catchment. In providing the means of overcoming the water quality threats, a range of alternatives methods/guidelines are explored, from which the most effective are selected, guiding the implementation of remediation activities, termed here Best Management Practices (BMPs). The thesis has confirmed that small, first-order streams (source zones) are the most effective locations for managing diffuse pollution. Existing BMPs such as vegetation buffers produce impacts that coincidence with those reported in the literature. Investigation into differences in water quality, between a vegetated (buffer) and unvegetated first-order streams, showed that with the removal of a buffer and stock access; suspended sediment (TSS) increased by 85 percent. But Nitrogen (N) and Phosphorus (P) concentrations and loads were more variable and dominated by specific landholder attitudes and practices. The drainage system demonstrates a surprising capacity to assimilate nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). Although the mechanism of how this is achieved, is not totally understood, it appears fine in-channel sediments provide the sink for these pollutants. The store is largest in source zones, where P concentrations are not significantly different to surroundings paddocks or riparian areas. It is noteworthy that in clay catchments paddocks are well coupled with channels. A catalogue of BMPs for management of diffuse water pollution is provided, of which a selection are shown that offer a range of benefits in both reducing TSS, N and P concentrations but also in overcoming other ecological obstacles...

Book excerpt: The Water Quality and Management for Recreation and Tourism conference brought together engineers, scientists and managers concerned with the management of water and wastewater in situations where recreation and tourism pose special challenges. The papers published in these proceedings discuss problems that develop in small water bodies - swimming pools, waterslides and spas - as well as the problems associated with larger water bodies - canals, rivers, lakes and coastal waters. The four main areas covered are management and planning, microbiology, ecotoxicology and analytical chemistry.
