Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design and objectives of the program for evaluating stream quality in North Carolina are described. Using water-quality and streamflow data collected since the 1940's, a study is underway to define certain variations in water quality, to quantify the effects of man 's activities on water quality, and to determine long-term trends at key locations on the State 's major river. Data collected from 47 unpolluted stream sites were used to estimate average concentrations for naturally occurring constituents during periods of high and low flow. Methods are described for estimating constituent loads derived from both natural sources and sources of pollution. (Woodard-USGS)

Book excerpt: Nonpoint sources of pollution may be responsible for as much as 50 percent of current water quality degradation in the United States, and as much as 70 percent in the Southeast. In this study, I used an ecological risk assessment methodology, at the watershed scale and riparian scales (zones 300, 100, and 50 feet on either side of streams), to analyze and quantify the impact of nonpoint pollution on the ecological integrity and water quality of North Carolina streams. Specifically, I determined how land-use patterns relate to aquatic ecological integrity, including the extent to which one of the most widely promoted best management practices (BMPs) - the preservation of riparian vegetated buffers - correlates with better ecological integrity. The central goal of this project was the creation of a set of empirical models that describe the vulnerability of North Carolina aquatic ecological integrity - as measured by benthic macroinvertebrate community structure - to changes in the landscape-scale sources of nonpoint pollution. The models, the result of multiple regression analysis of Geographic Information System (GIS)-derived data, take into account watershed eight land form characteristics, and three land cover types derived from 1992 Multi-Resolution Land Characterization (MRLC) Consortium raster data: forest, urban, and agriculture. The land form characteristics considered in this analysis are topographic complexity, mean elevation, watershed slope/relief ratio, watershed area, watershed shape, rainfall, soil clay content, and ecoregion. The regression equation models created by this process can be used by managers and policymakers to weigh the risks of management and policy decisions for a given watershed or set of watersheds, including whether vegetated riparian buffers are ecologically effective and economically efficient in achieving water quality standards. The coefficient of multiple determination (R2) for each equation indicates the p.

Book excerpt: Streamflow and water-quality data, including concentrations of nutrients, metals, and pesticides, were collected from October 1988 through September 2009 at six sites in the Treyburn development study area. A review of water-quality data for streams in and near a 5,400-acre planned, mixed-use development in the Falls Lake watershed in the upper Neuse River Basin of North Carolina indicated only small-scale changes in water quality since the previous assessment of data collected from 1988 to 1998. Loads and yields were estimated for sediment and nutrients, and temporal trends were assessed for specific conductance, pH, and concentrations of dissolved oxygen, suspended sediment, and nutrients. Water-quality conditions for the Little River tributary and Mountain Creek may reflect development within these basins. The nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations at the Treyburn sites are low compared to sites nationally. The herbicides atrazine, metolachlor, prometon, and simazine were detected frequently at Mountain Creek and Little River tributary but concentrations are low compared to sites nationally. Little River tributary had the lowest median suspended-sediment yield over the 1988–2009 study period, whereas Flat River tributary had the largest median yield. The yields estimated for suspended sediment and nutrients were low compared to yields estimated for other basins in the Southeastern United States. Recent increasing trends were detected in total nitrogen concentration and suspended-sediment concentrations for Mountain Creek, and an increasing trend was detected in specific conductance for Little River tributary. Decreasing trends were detected in dissolved nitrite plus nitrate nitrogen, total ammonia plus organic nitrogen, sediment, and specific conductance for Flat River tributary.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Relationships between stream flow and water chemistry are very useful in understanding how basin conditions/practices relate to overall water quality in and among watersheds. This information can further be applied in watershed planning studies and water quality restoration efforts, in which pollutant loadings to a stream are estimated. Regression analysis was conducted in two phases, on data collected by the USGS from 1993 through 1997 to determine relationships between stream flow and water quality for the Gar Creek, McDowell Creek, and McMullen Creek watersheds in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. The three basins vary in size and land use characteristics, which will allow comparison of how water quality parameters behave differently among the three basins. This paper will: (1) Reexamine the methods and results of a previous study of the Gar and McDowell creeks, by incorporating more recent (1995-1997) data, (2) Determine discharge-water quality relationships for the McMullen Creek watershed, taking into account lessons learned in the first step, and (3) Demonstrate how these relationships can be utilized in watershed planning and water quality restoration projects, through case studies and hypothetical situations.
