Though the MENA Region is not a main contributor to climate change, it is predicted that several vital sectors will be negatively impacted, which is a threat to the sustainability of its socio-economic development. Water availability in the MENA Region is expected to be negatively impacted by climate change due to the predicted reduction of rainfall and increased evaporation. In addition, domestic and agricultural demands for freshwater will dramatically increase due to the expected temperature rise, which will enlarge the already existing gap between supply and demand in several MENA countries. It is important to note that the negative impacts on water resources will directly translate to other sectors due to their strong connectivity with the water sector. These sectors are food security, health, ecology, environment, economy and social. Predicted sea level rise due to melting of the poles is expected to result in land use change, which will in turn have severe social and economic consequences. Proper mitigation and adaptation options that take into consideration the multi-dimensional nature of the climate change impacts are imperative to conserve these sectors and to sustain the socio-economic development of the MENA Region. The objective of this book is to provide readers with state-of-the-art knowledge of diverse experiences related to the possible climate change impacts, mitigation and adaptation options in the MENA Region, and to identify and to deliberate upon the research needs and concepts against the background of increasing threats to ecosystems, economy and human health.

This is because of pollution due to anthropogenic activities that are related to the increase of human population. The man-induced inputs as important sources of pollution contribute to the contamination of water quality in rivers and reservoirs. These pollutants include domestic organic wastes, industrial wastes, heavy metals, oil and grease, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, endocrine disrupting chemicals, persistent organic pollutants, etc., which can deteriorate the natural chemistry of water. Monitoring the pollutant levels in water bodies is an important issue, since their elevated levels could be hazardous to biota that live in the water body and the sedimentary compartment of the aquatic ecosystems, partly or mostly being the natural resources in the food chain up to human being. Therefore, water pollution will always remain a never-ending story, today's society will be faced with. To conclude, the aim of this workshop was to update the knowledge on water related issues and to discuss practical solutions to reduce (if even not to stop) water pollution while integrating experts from technological, environmental and social-economic fields.

As water resources become more stretched, the energy and food sectors’ dependence on water means that decision-makers are now increasingly focusing on water resources management, ecosystem protection, and water supply and sanitation as part of their policy and practice for sustainable developments goals. In addition, there will need development of less water-intensive renewable energy, such as hydropower and wind power, before it makes a significant impact on water demand. As agriculture set to remain the biggest user of water into the middle of this century, efficiency measures along the entire agrifood technologies can help saving water and energy, such as precision irrigation based on information supplied by water providers, which can motivate farmers to invest in their systems ensuring the best returns from their water investments. The expert workshop held in Aswan, Egypt aimed to exchange knowledge and to share information on water-energy-food challenges and solutions, and to establish a sustainable network of water experts in the MENA Region.

In addition, water pollution issues are of high priority and crucial to address to stakeholders in terms of environment, health, and agriculture, and involving them into related R&D projects. Book excerpt: Today, plastic materials are present in nearly all spheres of modern life, starting from simple packaging, clothes containing synthetic fibers, containers, drinking bottles and tires to various life-supporting medical equipment. Their manufacture, use and discharge have significantly increased the amount of plastic waste, including plastic marine litter in oceans, which is detrimental to the ecosystems and human health. Marine litter and microplastics are having a great impact on global environment and human health. How to improve reuse and recycling, to minimize plastic waste and to promote plastic alternatives, have received much attention recently for the purpose of controlling plastic litter in the freshwater and marine ecosystems. Research related to microplastics is at its infant stage and thus is facing a number of unknowns and incompletely answered questions. Most of known literature studies are concentrated in the Northern hemisphere (Europe, North America, etc.), but very few studies are known in the Southern hemisphere, for example Asia or Africa. In addition, most of the investigations were carried out in marine ecosystems; however, the main source of microplastics pollution actually originates from terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems. Until today, no reliable inventory of microplastics pollution of rivers, estuaries, and sediments has been carried out in order to assess the current state and subsequent health risks to human and other living organism. The objectives of this book is to provide readers with state-of-the-art knowledge of MP pollution and its related implications, and to identify and to deliberate upon the research needs and concepts against the background of increasing threats to ecosystems, wildlife and human health.
