Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On most days, the wilderness gave me peace. But not tonight. In a land sculpted by glaciers, the forest is on fire. Thick smoke chokes the mountain air and casts an apocalyptic glow over the imposing peaks and vistas of Montana’s Glacier National Park. When firefighters are called in to dig firebreaks near the small town bordering the park, a crew member is shocked to unearth a shallow grave containing human remains. Park Police Officer Monty Harris is summoned to the site to conduct an excavation. But with an incendiary monster threatening to consume the town, Monty seeks help from Gretchen Larson, the county’s lead crime scene investigator. While the two work frantically to determine the true identity of the victim, a teenager suddenly disappears from one of the campgrounds in Glacier. Could the cases somehow be connected? As chances for recovery of the missing boy grow slimmer and the FBI finds only dead ends, Gretchen and Monty desperately race to fit all the pieces together while battling time, the elements, and their own unresolved inner conflicts. The Weight of Night is the latest novel in an award-winning series which “paints a moving picture of complex, flawed people fighting to make their way in a wilderness where little is black or white” (Publishers Weekly). It is a gripping tribute to the power of redemption set against one of America’s most majestic and unforgiving landscapes.

Book excerpt: “The Tapping Solution for Weight Loss and Body Confidence may just go down in history as a game-changer when it comes to leading women out of weight loss hell.” — Cheryl Richardson, New York Times best-selling author of The Art of Extreme Self-Care Placing conditions on our lives and our happiness has become the norm. We see it all the time: We must establish a career before looking for a relationship. We must find love before feeling fulfilled. We must feel stressed out until we finish everything on our to-do list. But by far, the most common conditions we put on ourselves revolve around our weight—no love until we lose the weight, no pursuing a dream until we lose the weight, no happiness until we lose the weight. But now there’s a better option. Using tapping, also known as EFT, Jessica Ortner walks you through a process that helps you drop stress so you can drop pounds—without dieting, deprivation, or extreme exercise. Tapping, a tool that is based on the principles of both ancient acupressure and modern psychology, helps you address the underlying issues that make your body hold on to weight and gives you the ability to overcome some of the most common weight loss obstacles. Say good-bye to the cravings, panic, and self-doubt that keep you in a constant fight against your body! Using her own struggles with weight loss, along with success stories of some of the thousands of women she’s worked with, Jessica teaches you not only the basics of tapping but also how to use it to address the deeper facets of your weight and self-worth challenges. This proven process is based on extensive research into the effects of tapping on stress hormones, and it provides simple, step-by-step instructions throughout and easy tapping meditations at the end of each chapter. With this loving and supportive guidance you can learn to create a more empowering relationship with food, find pleasure in exercise, and implement self-care into your life. So join Jessica and learn to love yourself and your body!

Book excerpt: A collection of wisdom, humor, and tasteless remarks from Vanderbilt University's House Organ magazine: . Every morning when I would leave for work, he would give me the saddest look he could muster. If you know anything about beagles, you know that this is the canine equivalent of the death scene from Camille. When a beagle wants to look sad, he can roll his big brown droopy eyes up at you and pull his ears back, and you will do anything to make him happier. In fact, many beagles earn top commissions in the sales field by giving customers that sad look until they crack and buy whatever the beagle is selling. "I'll buy anything," the customers cry, throwing money at the beagle, "just stop looking at me like that!" . The voice-mail mantra, "Your call is very important to us" is always a lie. If my call were actually important to you, you would answer the phone instead of putting me on hold and playing an orchestral version of the old Buoys hit "Timothy." A portion of all profits from the sale of this book goes to the Jade Pasley Patient and Family Assistance Fund of the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center.

Book excerpt: In the New York Times best-selling book The Tapping Solution, Nick Ortner, founder of the Tapping World Summit and best-selling filmmaker of The Tapping Solution, is at the forefront of a new healing movement. In this book, he gives readers everything they need to successfully start using the powerful practice of tapping—or Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT).Tapping is one of the fastest and easiest ways to address both the emotional and physical problems that tend to hamper our lives. Using the energy meridians of the body, practitioners tap on specific points while focusing on particular negative emotions or physical sensations. The tapping helps calm the nervous system to restore the balance of energy in the body, and in turn rewire the brain to respond in healthy ways. This kind of conditioning can help rid practitioners of everything from chronic pain to phobias to addictions. Because of tapping’s proven success in healing such a variety of problems, Ortner recommends to try it on any challenging issue. In The Tapping Solution, Ortner describes not only the history and science of tapping but also the practical applications. In a friendly voice, he lays out easy-to-use practices, diagrams, and worksheets that will teach readers, step-by-step, how to tap on a variety of issues. With chapters covering everything from the alleviation of pain to the encouragement of weight loss to fostering better relationships, Ortner opens readers’ eyes to just how powerful this practice can be. Throughout the book, readers will see real-life stories of healing ranging from easing the pain of fibromyalgia to overcoming a fear of flying. The simple strategies Ortner outlines will help readers release their fears and clear the limiting beliefs that hold them back from creating the life they want.

This powerful technique helped Jon drop 220 pounds without dieting or deprivation because it didn’t depend on calorie counting or extreme exercise—rather it changed his biochemistry and neural pathways. In turn, this helped lower stress and its associated inflammatory chemicals in his body, allowing him to lose weight easily and naturally. Examining the importance of visualizing for weight loss, Jon takes readers through the latest research on the power of the mind in order to show why this technique works. And then he lays out concrete, unintimidating advice about how to implement visualization into their lives. In addition to teaching readers how to move into the most powerful brain state for enacting change, Jon includes visualizations to help readers: • Overcome disempowering beliefs surrounding food and weight loss • Melt away stress • Conquer fears of losing weight • Rediscover the joy of movement • Create healthy new habits • Kill food cravings and addictions • Achieve better sleep Jon not only provides readers with these visualizations but also teaches them how to create their own personalized visualizations that can be even more powerful. He then presents a four-month visualization strategy that can be easily included in anyone’s life—no matter what time constraints they face. As Jon found in his journey, the biggest challenge in weight loss is not finding the perfect diet or the perfect exercise routine; the biggest challenge is convincing your brain that your body needs to be thin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caldas and Bankston provide a critical, dispassionate analysis of why desegregation in the United States has failed to achieve the goal of providing equal educational opportunities for all students. They offer case histories through dozens of examples of failed desegregation plans from all over the country. The book takes a very broad perspective on race and education, situated in the larger context of the development of individual rights in Western civiliztion. The book traces the long legal history of first racial segregation, and then racial desegregation in America. The authors explain how rapidly changing demographics and family structure in the United States have greatly complicated the project of top-down government efforts to achieve an ideal racial balance in schools. It describes how social capital—a positive outcome of social interaction between and among parents, children, and teachers—creates strong bonds that lead to high academic achievement. The authors show how coercive desegregation weakens bonds and hurts not only students and schools, but also entire communities. Examples from all parts of the United States show how parents undermined desegregation plans by seeking better educational alternatives for their children rather than supporting the public schools to which their children were assigned. Most important, this book offers an alternative, more realistic viewpoint on class, race, and education in America.

Drawing upon recent examples including Lost, 24, and Heroes, this book closely examines the ways that television programming has changed with the influx of new media—transforming nearly every TV series into a franchise, whose on-air, online, and on-mobile elements are created simultaneously and held together through transmedia storytelling. This book is essential for understanding how creative and industrial forces have worked together in the new media age to transform the way we watch TV.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is meant to paint a picture to my grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended families, friends, and loved ones to be attentive to your children. It was not in the closet nor was it a dream. He was an unwelcome visitor that followed me no matter where we moved to. He would always seek me out after everyone went to bed. It seemed like no one could ever see what was going on when he was around. I developed a hatred disposition that was visible. I hated each episode. I just wanted to be left alone. He would always find his way to me. All I wanted was to be free and live childhood and a teenage life. It continued until age fifteen. I prayed that he would disappear, and one day he did. I've been teaching, preaching, singing the gospel for over forty years. I recognize that nothing is more important to me than living a life for God and being an example for Him. Through it all, God kept me and God equipped me with a spirit of discernment in this particular area. When I see it hovering over young males or young females, I am now able to intercede on their behalf. The lifestyle I had before Christ had no character. At that stage of my life, character did not count. I've been told a lot of things by people who are gone on to be with the Lord. So many people have helped me in dire straits throughout my life. Through it all, I thank God for introducing me to those who have helped. Some have gone on to be with the Lord. Some are still here to encourage me to persevere all for Christ Jesus and kingdom building. I'm grateful for those of you. I believe that God wants us to live and enjoy life abundantly. I believe in having godly character because character does count. Abuse--whether verbal, mental, physical, psychological actions or threats, financial, bullying, manipulation, humiliation, injury, or pornographic--is catastrophic and detrimental to one's life and future.
