Book excerpt: Revised July 27, 2010 - Working for twenty five years inside the prison walls, it has become harder than ever to keep staff safe. Smaller budgets and less staff, employees struggle to keep their heads above water and be safe. This effort has become an ever lasting challenge. This book was written from a personal view to help understand the dynamics of working inside a prison no matter where it is. Correctional Officers are heroes but never recognized as such in our community. Retired as a deputy warden and having the opportunity to work all custody levels I have been putting these thoughts into words. This book is written to be inspirational and provide insight how to focus on your dreams to attain your anticipated success in a most honorable and ethical way. Filled with adversity, challenges and reality, it is an inside view of your world inside the walls. Watching your friends and family fall to the stress and politics; it is important we don't let these dreams turn into wasted moments and wasted honor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In reality, prisons resemble small communities where the warden is the mayor of a small town and the unit deputy wardens serve as council members. As soon as you come to realize this background is very much like a miniature restricted adaptation of our free societies, you will understand the roles we play. The same responsibilities outside in the "free world" apply inside our prisons. Tools formalized to be available to administrators inside the prison consist of state statutes and policies and procedures that may be used to manage events which under the existing negative circumstances of a potentially hazardous work / living environment. This potential of danger may eventually lead to the use of force allowable by law that range from non lethal force to the use of deadly or lethal force, depending on the severity of the situation at hand. Thus when the comparison is finished, inside of the prison world we retain the basics of water, food, shelter, clothing and civility to a degree where these conditions resemblance limited and warped-minded kindness, compassion, respect, politeness and cooperation with each other to co-exist. Although there is no doubt of the correctional employee's boldness to brag about the job at times, it has been established "the less said in public, the better off we are explaining what we do'". This book is merely a reconstruction of events as they occurred and handled. Candidly written, the author tries to show part of a story as they were gleaned from his own eyes and his own mind. Regardless of what anyone else may think, judge or conclude to be truthful or untruthful this is his own story. In other words, it is purely personal from his point of view with a touch of reality to bring forth the issue at hand. Written in fiction and non-fiction, this book demonstrates logical and illogical decision making as well as sound correctional best practices and suggestions to make it better place to work and function.
Book Synopsis The Optimal Modified 2/1-Club System by : Neil H. Timm Ph.D.
Download or read book The Optimal Modified 2/1-Club System written by Neil H. Timm Ph.D. and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2022-03-23 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My goal for “The Modified Optimal 2/1-Club System” is to show how to use the Optimal Point Count (OPC) method of hand evaluation developed by Patrick. Darricades in his book “Optimal Hand Evaluation” (2019) to improve the dialogue between two players to achieve an optimal bridge contract. The primary objective is to demonstrate how to apply the new system approach to contract bridge by illustrating a more accurate method of hand evaluation whether you play 2/1, Standard American (SA), Acol or Precision, among others. The Two over One (2/1) Game Force bidding system was an improvement over the SA System that has been in effect and played by bridge players for many years. Many claim that the advantage of the 2/1 system allows the partnership to know that game is possible with only a single bid provided one has 13+ points. As we shall see for suit contracts it is only true if the opening 2/1 bidder has 15 points, not 12/13 points since 25/26 points do not result in game whenever a singleton in one hand finds “wasted honor points” in partner’s hand. Yet, most 2/1 conventions call for 13+ High Card Points (HCP). Another flaw of the 2/1 approach is the fact that opening 1-level suit bids have a wide bidding range (12-21). To eliminate this flaw, the principles of Pinpoint Precision with 1*= 18+ points and new responses associated with a new and improved hand evaluation method. A major flaw of most Strong Club opening bids is that they are based solely on HCPs with opening bids of 1*=16/17+ HCP. To correct these flaws among others, the search for a better hand evaluation method and a better bidding system has been unrelenting. Hand evaluation methods have been popularized by Milton Work, Charles Goren, Marty Bergen, and Petkoy Zar, and others. All falling short when applied to the commonly used “dialogue” bidding systems. The Optimal Point Count (OPC) method of hand evaluation corrects the many flaws of prior hand evaluation methods when applied to any bidding system. In this book many “traditional/standard” bidding practices that do not help to show suit fi t and distribution are to be avoided or re-defined. Splinters and mini splinters which show the location of voids and singletons to help locate wasted honors, the XYZ bidding convention, cue bidding, and new bids for the investigation of game and slam are among the cornerstone conventions reviewed in this book. Newly defined 2 and 3-level bids to show hands with 6/7+card suits are defined to prevent the opponents from finding their optimal contract and to improve upon difficult bidding sequences using traditional bidding strategies. The evaluation of one’s Offense to Defense Ratio (ODR), why many well-known bidding sequences must be avoided, and an analysis of several old “standard” bridge laws/rules are reviewed to show why they need not be used to improve one’s judgement if one employs the OPC method.

Book Synopsis Painting Women by : Patricia Phillippy
Download or read book Painting Women written by Patricia Phillippy and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original analysis of the representation and self-representation of women in literature and visual arts revolves around multiple early modern senses of "painting": the creation of visual art in the form of paint on canvas and the use of cosmetics to paint women's bodies. Situating her study in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Italy, France, and England, Patricia Phillippy brings together three distinct actors: women who paint themselves with cosmetics, women who paint on canvas, and women and men who paint women—either with pigment or with words. Phillippy asserts that early modern attitudes toward painting, cosmetics, and poetry emerge from and respond to a common cultural history. Materially, she connects those who created images of women with pigment to those who applied cosmetics to their own bodies through similar mediums, tools, techniques, and exposure to toxic materials. Discursively, she illuminates historical and social issues such as gender and morality with the nexus of painting, painted women, and women painters. Teasing out the intricate relationships between these activities as carried out by women and their visual and literary representation by women and by men, Phillippy aims to reveal the delineation and transgression of women's creative roles, both artistic and biological. In Painting Women, Phillippy provides a cross-disciplinary study of women as objects and agents of painting.
Book Synopsis Those Practical Proverbs by : David A. Balsley
Download or read book Those Practical Proverbs written by David A. Balsley and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2019-01-02 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those Practical Proverbs is a verse-by-verse commentary on the book of Proverbs from a pastor’s perspective. It begins with an exploration of the authorship of Proverbs—most of which was written by King Solomon, with brief sections by Agur, the son of Jakeh, and the words of King Lemuel (from an oracle, which his mother taught him). It proceeds to an explanation of the structure of Hebrew poetry, a list of some of the topics addressed in the book, and an outline of the book. The opening chapters of Proverbs (1–9) consist of longer “wisdom poems” on a variety of significant subjects. Most chapters of Proverbs consist of single-verse observations concerning many of life’s practical concerns (with occasional multiverse entries). The book concludes with the entries of Agur and King Lemuel and, finally, the classic alphabetic acrostic poem regarding the “excellent wife.” Because the book focuses largely on the wisdom and understanding, which find their origin in the fear of the Lord, it is among the most life-enriching books ever written. It is extremely important for anyone who longs for practical guidance in the many issues of life.
