Book excerpt: Washington Square is a tragicomedy that recounts the conflict between a dull but sweet daughter and her brilliant, unemotional father. The plot of the novel is based upon a true story told to James by his close friend, British actress Fanny Kemble. The book is often compared with Jane Austen's work for the clarity and grace of its prose and its intense focus on family relationships. Dr. Austin Sloper, a wealthy and highly successful physician, lives in Washington Square, New York with his daughter Catherine. Catherine is a sweet-natured young woman who is a great disappointment to her father, being physically plain and, he believes, dull in terms of personality and intellect. His sister, Lavinia Penniman, a meddlesome woman with a weakness for romance and melodrama, is the only other member of the doctor's household. Henry James (1843–1916) was an American-British writer who spent most of his writing career in Britain. He is regarded as one of the key figures of 19th-century literary realism.

Book excerpt: Washington Square is a short novel by Henry James. Originally published in 1880 as a serial in Cornhill Magazine and Harper's New Monthly Magazine, it is a structurally simple tragicomedy that recounts the conflict between a dull but sweet daughter and her brilliant, unemotional father. The plot of the novel is based upon a true story told to James by his close friend, British actress Fanny Kemble. The book is often compared with Jane Austen's work for the clarity and grace of its prose and its intense focus on family relationships. James was not a great fan of Washington Square. He tried to read it over for inclusion in the New York Edition of his fiction (1907-1909) but found that he could not, so the novel was not included. Readers, though, have sufficiently enjoyed the book to make it one of the more popular of James's works. Indeed, and has since been used in schools all over the world. The novel is told in the first person omniscient point of view, and the narrator often offers comments directly to the reader ("though it is an awkward confession to make about one's heroine, I must add she was something of a glutton", Chapter II) The novel begins at a distance from the characters, describing the background of the Sloper family. It then recounts in detail the story of Catherine's romance with Morris Townsend. When Morris jilts her, the focus shifts back to a long view. As the narrator puts it: "Our story has hitherto moved with very short steps, but as it approaches its termination it must take a long stride." The final few chapters are taken once more in short steps, ending with the striking vignette of Catherine's refusal of Morris.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: serialized in Harper's Magazine in 1880, Washington Square is considered one of Henry James' maximum well-known (and most on hand) novels. In 1881, Washington Square changed into published in novel shape the identical yr. that Portrait of a Lady become published. Unlike tons of Henry James' work (as an example, Daisy Miller or The Ambassadors), Washington Square is a thoroughly American novel: the characters are American as is the placing. Indeed, Washington Square is the neighborhood wherein Henry James turned into born. The novel makes a specialty of a specific American neighborhood all through a specific historic period. Nonetheless, the fact remains that Henry James did now not write Washington Square from the standpoint of a New Yorker who was a resident of a vintage historic neighborhood. Henry James turned into dwelling in London on the time however he wrote the tale whilst in Paris. In terms of context, it is imperative to situate Washington Square as a thoroughly American e-book that is deliberately written from a distance. If the reader does the math's, it isn't difficult to kind of discern out when Dr. Sloper became born and married, and while Catherine turned into born and whilst she has become engaged. Most of the radical's drama takes place at some stage in the early 1840s, whilst Dr. Sloper is around fifty years old and Catherine is about two decades vintage. By the cease of the unconventional, and Dr. Sloper's death, it is the early 1850s. Civil conflict has erupted, but this does not limit Catherine from saying: "I like surprises. And it's so quiet now." Henry James and his heroine are each nicely-removed shape the actual global of real activities. Just as Henry James has eliminated himself from American politics and society, his characters function inside a bubble. This novel is set Washington Square, but it's far notably insulated from large countrywide issues. The argument has been made on both facets that such insularity is quintessentially American and un-American, an expression of liberty or privacy. What is beyond dispute is that this novel does take extraordinary pains to demonstrate "Old New York" a society that changed into beginning to undergo critical alternate by way of the early 1880s. When James returns to the USA inside the early 1900s, he returns to his adolescence community and reveals that so much has departed. In the confusion of immigration, industrialization and commercialization, the various vintage homes and social circles of Washington Square had disappeared. In his journey narrative, The American Scene, first posted in 1905, James recounts that his birth-residence (the house wherein he changed into born) had been destroyed. Historical money owed suggest that a blouse manufacturing facility stood in area of the house! Clearly Washington Square demonstrates that this community and James' feel of personal non-public records was very vital. Just as Catherine will become a professional on antique customs and a mum or dad of the past, Henry James seeks to record the antique customs of "Old New York" on this painting.

She lives with her widowed father, a respected doctor, in Washington Square, a fairly new neighborhood in Greenwich Village. Catherine has a sizable income left by her mother, and stands to inherit a fortune from her father. Men don’t pay much attention to her—until she meets Mr. Townsend. The two quickly become interested in each other, but Catherine’s father disapproves of the match. He has determined that Townsend is an idler and only cares about Catherine’s money. Catherine refuses to give up Townsend, and remains as firmly for him as her father is against him. Her meddlesome aunt, Mrs. Penniman, becomes overly involved, trying to steer each actor according to her own foolish and romantic notions. Henry James considered Washington Square one of his poorer novels, and thought that Catherine was the only good part of it. Later critics received it more favorably. It was adapted into a play, The Heiress, in 1947, and into a film by the same name shortly after. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • From the award-winning, best-selling author of the classic A Little Life—a bold, brilliant novel spanning three centuries and three different versions of the American experiment, about lovers, family, loss and the elusive promise of utopia. A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: VOGUE • ESQUIRE • NPR • GOODREADS To Paradise is a fin de siècle novel of marvelous literary effect, but above all it is a work of emotional genius. The great power of this remarkable novel is driven by Yanagihara’s understanding of the aching desire to protect those we love—partners, lovers, children, friends, family, and even our fellow citizens—and the pain that ensues when we cannot. In an alternate version of 1893 America, New York is part of the Free States, where people may live and love whomever they please (or so it seems). The fragile young scion of a distinguished family resists betrothal to a worthy suitor, drawn to a charming music teacher of no means. In a 1993 Manhattan besieged by the AIDS epidemic, a young Hawaiian man lives with his much older, wealthier partner, hiding his troubled childhood and the fate of his father. And in 2093, in a world riven by plagues and governed by totalitarian rule, a powerful scientist’s damaged granddaughter tries to navigate life without him—and solve the mystery of her husband’s disappearances. These three sections comprise an ingenious symphony, as recurring notes and themes deepen and enrich one another: A townhouse in Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village; illness, and treatments that come at a terrible cost; wealth and squalor; the weak and the strong; race; the definition of family, and of nationhood; the dangerous righteousness of the powerful, and of revolutionaries; the longing to find a place in an earthly paradise, and the gradual realization that it can’t exist. What unites not just the characters, but these Americas, are their reckonings with the qualities that make us human: Fear. Love. Shame. Need. Loneliness.

The Miss Slopers had been but two in number, and both of them had married early in life. The younger, Mrs. Almond by name, was the wife of a prosperous merchant, and the mother of a blooming family. She bloomed herself, indeed, and was a comely, comfortable, reasonable woman, and a favourite with her clever brother, who, in the matter of women, even when they were nearly related to him, was a man of distinct preferences. He preferred Mrs. Almond to his sister Lavinia, who had married a poor clergyman, of a sickly constitution and a flowery style of eloquence, and then, at the age of thirty-three, had been left a widow, without children, without fortune-with nothing but the memory of Mr. Penniman's flowers of speech, a certain vague aroma of which hovered about her own conversation. Nevertheless he had offered her a home under his own roof, which Lavinia accepted with the alacrity of a woman who had spent the ten years of her married life in the town of Poughkeepsie. The Doctor had not proposed to Mrs. Penniman to come and live with him indefinitely; he had suggested that she should make an asylum of his house while she looked about for unfurnished lodgings. It is uncertain whether Mrs. Penniman ever instituted a search for unfurnished lodgings, but it is beyond dispute that she never found them. She settled herself with her brother and never went away, and when Catherine was twenty years old her Aunt Lavinia was still one of the most striking features of her immediate entourage. Mrs. Penniman's own account of the matter was that she had remained to take charge of her niece's education. She had given this account, at least, to every one but the Doctor, who never asked for explanations which he could entertain himself any day with inventing. Mrs. Penniman, moreover, though she had a good deal of a certain sort of artificial assurance, shrank, for indefinable reasons, from presenting herself to her brother as a fountain of instruction. She had not a high sense of humour, but she had enough to prevent her from making this mistake; and her brother, on his side, had enough to excuse her, in her situation, for laying him under contribution during a considerable part of a lifetime.

Book excerpt: Henry James’s Daisy Miller was an immediate sensation when it was first published in 1878 and has remained popular ever since. In this novella, the charming but inscrutable young American of the title shocks European society with her casual indifference to its social mores. The novella was popular in part because of the debates it sparked about foreign travel, the behaviour of women, and cultural clashes between people of different nationalities and social classes. This Broadview edition presents an early version of James’s best-known novella within the cultural contexts of its day. In addition to primary materials about nineteenth-century womanhood, foreign travel, medicine, philosophy, theatre, and art—some of the topics that interested James as he was writing the story—this volume includes James’s ruminations on fiction, theatre, and writing, and presents excerpts of Daisy Miller as he rewrote it for the theatre and for a much later and heavily revised edition.
