Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1790, after seven years of heated debate, the Continental Congress approved a plan to establish the nation's offical capital in a barely populated swamp straddling the Potomac River. Ten years later, in November 1800, Congress gaveled in its first session in the federal city—Washington—in what was then called the Territory of Columbia. Washington, DC, History for Kids chronicles the rich and fascinating history of our nation's capital. Its first years were difficult—in 1814 the British invaded and burned the White House, the Treasury Building, and the Half-built Capitol Building—yet the city survived and flourished. During the next two centuries, District residents endured the Civil War at the front lines, witnessed the assassinations of two presidents, erected national monuments, and strove to overcome the city's shameful racial segregation. This lively history also includes a time line, a list of online resources, and 21 engaging hands-on activities. Kids will: gather items for a cornerstone time capsule, take a walking tour of the national mall, research family history through the National Archives, design a memorial for a favorite president, plant a cherry tree, and more.

Through numerous primary sources and kid-friendly anecdotes, the history of the building is detailed including the many renovations and redecorations made over the years, and the daily lives of the White House’s inhabitants are illuminated including presidents and their families as well as the enormous staff that makes the White House run smoothly. Kids will learn that George Washington never slept in the White House and Abraham Lincoln never slept in the Lincoln Bedroom; why the Trumans had to move out of the White House for three years during Harry Truman’s presidency; which president’s daughter held her high school prom in the White House; the evolving layout of floors and rooms including today’s, and much more. Crosscurricular activities allow readers to walk in the footsteps of presidents and those around them. Readers can play key passages of “Hail to the Chief” and practice signing a bill the way presidents do, as well as make White House Punch and re-create an aerobic game designed for President Hoover. Katherine House was born in Washington, DC, and grew up in nearby Arlington, Virginia. She is the author of Lighthouses for Kids and has written articles about US and Iowa history for children’s magazines including AppleSeeds, Cobblestone, and the Goldfinch.

Sasek’s beloved and nostalgic children’s travel series. Sasek’s This is Washington, D.C. is a facsimile edition of his original book, which was first published in 1969. The brilliant illustrations have been meticulously preserved, with the facts updated for the twenty-first century. With bright pictures and snappy commentary, Sasek wittily captures all the fascinating things to do and see in a city of green parks, wide avenues, and classic white porticoes. Designed by a Frenchman and renowned for its cherry blossoms, This is Washington, D.C.!

Book excerpt: A city's population can grow exponentially after a major event, and Washington DC is no exception. After the Civil War, the district saw a significant increase in its size. Freed slaves flooded into the city and Washington DC remained a large African American population, including abolitionist Frederick Douglass. In the nineteenth century, the first neighborhoods grew up around the Capitol, Center Market, and the White House. After this, new suburbs were built as streetcar lines extended outward. A quarter of district residents are functionally illiterate, and nearly one-third of Americans are illiterate. Although the area has an abundance of immigrants, English is the primary language for nearly eighty-five percent of the population. In 2016, half of the population aged five and older spoke English at home. In 2017, the median household income was $77,649, and the personal income per capita was $50,832. In 2005, only 19% of D.C. residents lived below the poverty line. While not an actual architect, the Architect of the Capitol oversees a division of over two thousand employees that maintains the historic buildings of the United States government. These employees help maintain the Capitol's 570 acres of grounds. This office is also responsible for maintaining the many historic buildings and landmarks on Capitol Hill. From the Capitol to the House of Representatives, Washington DC is a city of storied history. In fact, the city is home to numerous historical monuments and countless interesting facts.

Book excerpt: When it was passed in 1789, the Constitution set out the boundaries not only for a new government but for a new capital city as well. At the time, the new District of Columbia covered 5,000 acres, dominated by marshland on the south, pastureland on the area that is now the Mall, farms near the White House and Capitol Hill, and undeveloped woods throughout. Covering Capitol Hill, the Mall, the Old Downtown area, the Ellipse, Lafayette Square, and Foggy Bottom, this engaging photographic history and walking tour documents how the Federal City grew from farmland to world capital. Striking images and detailed captions tell the fascinating stories behind many of the famous and the not so famous buildings and monuments that cover the D.C. landscape, from Union Station and the Capitol to the White House and the Watergate Hotel and many important sites in between.
