Book Synopsis Sheet Music of the Confederacy by : Robert I. Curtis
Download or read book Sheet Music of the Confederacy written by Robert I. Curtis and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-04-03 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of the Confederate States of America and the subsequent Civil War inspired composers, lyricists, and music publishers in Southern and border states, and even in foreign countries, to support the new nation. Confederate-imprint sheet music articulated and encouraged Confederate nationalism, honored soldiers and military leaders, comforted family and friends, and provided diversion from the hardships of war. This is the first comprehensive history of the sheet music of the Confederacy. It covers works published before the war in Southern states that seceded from the Union, and those published during the war in Union occupied capitals, border and Northern states, and foreign countries. It is also the first work to examine the contribution of postwar Confederate-themed sheet music to the South's response to its defeat, to the creation and fostering of Lost Cause themes, and to the promotion of national reunion and reconciliation.
Book Synopsis Confederate Sheet Music by : E. Lawrence Abel
Download or read book Confederate Sheet Music written by E. Lawrence Abel and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-06-14 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the American Civil War, songs united and inspired people on both sides. The North had a well-established music publishing industry when the war broke out, but the South had no such industry. The importance of music as an expression of the South's beliefs was obvious; as one music publisher said, "The South must not only fight her own battles but sing her own songs and dance to music composed by her own children." Southern entrepreneurs quickly rose to the challenge. This reference book is distinguished by three major differences from previously published works. First, it lists sheet music that is no longer extant (and listed nowhere else). Second, it gives complete lyrics for all extant songs, a rich source for researchers. And third, a brief historical background has been provided for many of the songs. Each entry provides as much of the following as possible (staying faithful to the typography of each title page): the title as published, names of all lyricists, composers and publishers; dates of publication; cities of publication; and if applicable, the names of catalogs or magazines in which the song appeared. Music published in Southern cities under Federal occupation is excluded.

Book excerpt: “Chick does a good job of portraying [General Beauregard] as the first real hero of the Confederacy, who at times proved his own worst enemy.” —The NYMAS Review Few Civil War generals attracted as much debate and controversy as Pierre Gustav Toutant Beauregard. He combined brilliance and charisma with arrogance and histrionics. He was a Catholic Creole in a society dominated by white Protestants, which made him appear exotic next to the likes of Albert Sidney Johnston and Robert E. Lee. He was reviled by Jefferson Davis and mocked by Mary Chesnut in her diary. Yet he was popular with his soldiers and subordinates. Outside of Lee, he was the South’s most consistently successful commander, winning at Bull Run, defending Charleston in 1863, and defeating Benjamin Butler at Bermuda Hundred and Ulysses Grant and George Meade at Petersburg. Yet, he lived his life in the shadow of his one major defeat: Shiloh. Beauregard’s career before and after the war was no less tumultuous. He was born among the Creole elite of Louisiana, but rejected the life of a planter in favor of the military, inspired by tales of Napoléon. He was considered a shining light of the antebellum army and performed superbly in the Mexican-American War. Yet he complained about a lack of promotion and made a frustrating stab at being mayor of New Orleans in 1858. After the war, he was a successful railroad executive and took a stand against racism, violence, and corruption during Reconstruction, but he was ousted from both railroads he oversaw and his foray into Reconstruction politics came to naught. And though he provided for his family and left them a hefty sum after his death, the money was mostly gained by working for the corrupt Louisiana Lottery. In Dreams of Victory: General P.G.T. Beauregard in the Civil War, Sean Michael Chick explores a life of contradictions and dreams unrealized—in a biography of one of the most fascinating figures of the Civil War.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These papers - with one exception - were prepared for The Cultivation of Artists in Nineteenth-Century America, a conference held at the American Antiquarian Society, April 30-May 2, 1993, to celebrate Diana Korzenik's gift of the Cross Family Art Archive to AAS. Subsequently this gift of works by three siblings from Manchester, New Hampshire, that includes their childhood drawings and instructional works, the proofs of their wood engravings, and oils and watercolors done as adults, was augmented with other materials relating to the history of the family and its artists. Taken together, the conference papers trace the transformation of art in America for its consumers and the evolution of working in art.
