Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wartime Farming on the Northern Great Plains Here is one of the largest and most important agricultural regions of the world. Its grain and its cattle have been outstanding articles of commerce in world markets for half a century. Today, they are more vital than ever before. They are sinews of war. Total war requires total production. This is as true of agriculture as it is of industry. Every man, every machine, every acre of our vast agricultural plant must produce its share of supplies for fighting men, for men and women at work, and for our allies in arms. American agriculture must in the years just ahead produce more than it ever has before. The Department of Agriculture has set produc tion goals never before reached in all our his tory. But they must be reached now. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farming for Greater Production of War Crops in the Intermountain and Southwestern Country There is nothing of a miracle in such accomplishments, because conservation farming simply means good husbandry that stops the leaks and gets the most possible out of the land without wastage of precious water and topsoil. As a means of encouraging more widespread adoption of conservation methods, the Depart ment of Agriculture is conducting a special program of assistance through Department of Agriculture War Boards and agencies best equipped to help, drawing upon practical experience that has been gained dating the last 10 years of National f arm program development. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Farmer in War-Time Another matter which comes into prominence at this time, when the importance of increased production is no apparent, is the prohibition of the importation of live cattle. Owing to the fear of the introduction of contagious diseases, all cattle arriving in this country have to be slaughtered at the port of arrival, and thus the home breeder of stock is in the enjoyment of an absolutely prowoted industry. It is very desirable to leave nothing undone to 11t our herds from disease, but it must be remembered tnat the effect of the means adopted has been to raise the price of store cattle to a figure which, until the very recent rise in price of fat stock, allowed the feeder no direct profit at all. The relaxation of the order prohibiting the importation of live cattle would have a very material efiect on the cost of producing meat, but only those in authority can tell whether this might not be attained at too great a risk. Anyhow, it behoves the British breeder not to waste the opportunity by breeding any but the best commercial stock.
