Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Cotton Gin Whitney, protested against the praises of his friend, removed what hopeful expectations the most ardent may have had by calmly replying that he had never seen either cotton or cotton-seed. Mrs. Greene's Object in her friendly introduction was to attract the attention of her influential visitors to the promis ing young man whom she was befriending. The conversa tion, however, had an unexpected result. The young law student threw aside his books and soon set off for Savannah. There he wandered about the wharves, in and around the storehouses, seeking a sample of cotton. After a long search he returned with a small parcel. A workroom in the basement Of the house was set apart for his use. He made the tools necessary for his task, drew his own wire, and proceeded to construct a gin engine is the full form) for separating cotton fibre from the seeds. His pur pose was divulged to no one save Mrs. Greene. The winter of 1792-93 was nearly over when his mysterious task was fully and satisfactorily completed. Early in the spring the cotton gin was set up in a shed, and prominent planters from all over the states were invited to see it work. It was successful from the start. The machine for which there had been such a clamoring for many years was at last pro vided by the ingenuity of a Yankee student. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Work of the United States Cotton Ginning Laboratory Cotton still belongs to the farmer while it is going through the ginning process. Most other farm products - milk, soybeans, fruit, vegetables, livestock, for example - leave the ownership of the grower before any processing starts. Therefore, as part of their quality-improvement programs, cotton growers are insisting that ginners handle and gin seed cotton so as to preserve all the quality that has been produced through improved varieties and cultural methods. They realize that a large part of the increased value as a result of their efforts toward crop improvement can be nullified during the few minutes it takes to gin a bale of cotton. Losses resulting from poor ginning are variously estimated up to or more annually. Therefore, the cost to producers of inadequate and poorly operated gin machinery represents a tremendous yet largely avoidable loss. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reclaiming and Marketing Cotton Gin Motes Most large industries handling products in their raw form have ultimately discovered ways to convert processing waste into valuable byproducts. In the ginning industry, cottonseed was the first ginning byproduct to receive wide spread recognition for its use value. Another byproduct that has more recently received attention is gin motes. The term gin motes, as used in the trade, re fers to any gin waste usable for its fiber content. It consists primarily of lint cleaner waste, but may sometimes include motes from.the gin stand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ginning Cotton to Preserve Fiber Quality Eli Whitney invented an ingenious machine. It worked wonders in solving a vexing problem of that age - that is, how to remove the fibers from the seed of very clean seed cotton. By very clean, we mean that almost all foreign matter had been carefully removed by hand. Whitney's gin met a great economic need because (1) it removed cotton fibers much faster than hand methods and (2) it removed cotton fibers at much less cost than hand methods. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past three decades, many history professors have allowed their biases to distort the way America’s past is taught. These intellectuals have searched for instances of racism, sexism, and bigotry in our history while downplaying the greatness of America’s patriots and the achievements of “dead white men.” As a result, more emphasis is placed on Harriet Tubman than on George Washington; more about the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II than about D-Day or Iwo Jima; more on the dangers we faced from Joseph McCarthy than those we faced from Josef Stalin. A Patriot’s History of the United States corrects those doctrinaire biases. In this groundbreaking book, America’s discovery, founding, and development are reexamined with an appreciation for the elements of public virtue, personal liberty, and private property that make this nation uniquely successful. This book offers a long-overdue acknowledgment of America’s true and proud history.

Book excerpt: Since its original publication in 1987, Like a Family has become a classic in the study of American labor history. Basing their research on a series of extraordinary interviews, letters, and articles from the trade press, the authors uncover the voices and experiences of workers in the Southern cotton mill industry during the 1920s and 1930s. Now with a new afterword, this edition stands as an invaluable contribution to American social history. "The genius of Like a Family lies in its effortless integration of the history of the family--particularly women--into the history of the cotton-mill world.--Ira Berlin, New York Times Book Review "Like a Family is history, folklore, and storytelling all rolled into one. It is a living, revelatory chronicle of life rarely observed by the academe. A powerhouse.--Studs Terkel "Here is labor history in intensely human terms. Neither great impersonal forces nor deadening statistics are allowed to get in the way of people. If students of the New South want both the dimensions and the feel of life and labor in the textile industry, this book will be immensely satisfying.--Choice

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.
