Book excerpt: Excerpt from Warships Associated With World War II in the Pacific: National Historic Landmark Theme Study During the course of this study more than 40 surviving warships and merchantmen dating from World War II were identified and visited. Twenty-five of these were found likely to meet the criteria of the National Historic Landmarks Program and are represented by inventory forms in this study. A twenty-sixth ship, uss Missouri, is written up because it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but is not likely to meet the criteria because of substantial changes made to her since listing. These vessels include most of the major types and classes of warships to see service from 1941 to 1945. The theme study is organized by classes because this is the best way to organize and describe the types of ships that saw service in the war. Many of these classes, especially for the destroyers and submarines, represent the development of warship design theory that evolved as a result of the hard lessons learned in battle against the Japanese during the war. Because of this, many of these classes are individually important and represent either an interim or final point in warship design. Included in this study are aircraft carriers, battleships, cruisers, destroyers, submarines, minesweepers, and a number of other types such as Liberty Ships, and PT Boats. One German submarine is included in this theme study for several reasons first, it is the only surviving one of its type anywhere; second, it relates to War in the Pacific in that the German submarine threat had to be defeated in order to shift strategic emphasis to the Pacific theater. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An highly illustrated examination of the key ships, tactics and operations of the Imperial Japanese Navy in the War in the Pacific in World War II. The Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) was the third most powerful navy in the world at the start of World War II, and came to dominate the Pacific in the early months of the war. This was a remarkable turnaround for a navy that only began to modernize in 1868, although defeats inflicted on the Russians and Chinese in successive wars at the turn of the century gave a sense of the threat the IJN was to pose. Bringing together for the first time material previously published in Osprey series books, and with the addition of new writing making use of the most recent research, this book details the Japanese ships which fought in the Pacific and examines the principles on which they were designed, how they were armed, when and where they were deployed and how effective they were in battle. The Imperial Japanese Navy in the Pacific War provides a history of the IJN's deployment and engagements, analysis of the evolution of strategy and tactics, and finally addresses the question of whether it truly was a modern navy, fully prepared for the rigors of combat in the Pacific. Illustrated throughout with photographs and detailed colour artworks, this is a valuable reference source for Pacific War enthusiasts and historians alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Top-ranking Japanese officers offer their personal perspectives of the Pacific War. Lauded by historians and World War II buffs eager for the Japanese viewpoint, this collection of essays makes significant contributions to the field of World War II literature. This second edition, originally published in 1986, adds five articles to the original twelve to provide a full picture of the Japanese’s navy’s role in the war. Most of these moving accounts were written in the 1950s and retain the immediacy felt by the writers when they participated in the events. They provide valuable information on the strategy, tactics, and operations of the Japanese fleet, as well as insights into the personalities and motives of its leaders. Here, Vice Admiral Shigeru Fukudome comes to grips with allegations that the assault on Pearl Harbor represented strategic folly, political blundering, and tactical stupidity. Captain Mitsuo Fuchida describes how his bombing group unleashed “devils of doom” on Battleship Row, and Mitsuru Yoshida gives an eye-witness account of the sinking of the famous battleship Yamato. The new contributions to the volume, translated especially for this book by the editor, discuss operations in the Indian Ocean, the battle of the Philippine Sea, the protection of merchant shipping, submarine warfare, and Japan’s overll naval strategy. A brief introduction precedes each essay to set it in historical context, and a biographical summary of each contributor is included. A striking collection of photographs and maps, many of which are new to this edition, augment the text.

Book excerpt: Abandon Ship is a fascinating account of enlisted life onboard U.S. naval warships in the Pacific Theater during WW2. Bill Jim Davis, the author, provides a riveting account of what it was like for him as a young seaman during those hazardous times. Amazingly, his individual experiences took him from the attack on Pearl Harbor to Okinawa, to the Japanese mainland, and from a new recruit to a commissioned officer by war's end. The reader gets a vivid, blow by blow account of the war in the Pacific. Anyone who wishes to see the war in the Pacific from the well trained eyes of a young sailor will find great value in this book. We, as a nation, are forever indebted to the young Davis and countless others like him who answered the call to duty and performed with valor. Such accounts are an invaluable reminder to future generations of the sacrifice, courage, and vigilance required to maintain the liberty and freedom we all enjoy in our great nation. Those young men and women who aspire to service in the United States Navy would be well served by reading this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italy's navy, the Regia Marina was the fourth-largest naval force in the world at the outbreak of World War II, and yet is often overlooked and largely discounted as ineffective. In general the fleet was made up of obsolete vessels, lacked radar functionality, and had a reputation for indiscipline and poorly trained crews. The complex and bureaucratic command system imposed on the fleet further hampered its effectiveness. In this book, Mark Stille details why the Italian battleships were able to maintain a solid reputation, examining their impressive designs and the courage and determination of the fleet at Calabria, Sirte, Cape Spartiveto and Cape Matapan, all illustrated with stunning photographs from the Italian Navy's own archives.
