Book Synopsis Building a War Chest by : Ryan Smith
Download or read book Building a War Chest written by Ryan Smith and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-04-04 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does leadership mean to you? This is a complex question with many layers. You might say it's not a question that is as cut-and-dried as others. Explaining what leadership means to you can say a lot about how you interact with others and of the values that matter most to you. In this book, Ryan looks at leadership not as defined by the world, but from the vantage point of the leadership distinctives of the Bible. Most leaders understand that leadership is defined as one person's influence upon another. Readers, prepare to be challenged to look deeper at the motivation behind that influence, the eventual outcome of that influence, and the principles to guide and sustain you in leadership. Whether you are a leader in a church, business, nonprofit organization, sports organization, classroom, or in your home, this book will inspire you to create a war chest full of resources. Building a War Chest will give you the tools to become a person of character and competence. These tools will help you achieve all that God has intended for your life and influence people to achieve their God-given destiny as well. So before wasting any time, let's begin accomplishing something significant by putting the right tools in our war chest so we have the insight we need to translate our visions to reality.
Book Synopsis The Zanzibar Chest by : Aidan Hartley
Download or read book The Zanzibar Chest written by Aidan Hartley and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2016-12-13 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of colonialism and its consequences. “A sweeping, poetic homage to Africa, a continent made vivid by Hartley’s capable, stunning prose” (Publishers Weekly). In his final days, Aidan Hartley’s father said to him, “We should have never come here.” Those words spoke of a colonial legacy that stretched back through four generations of one British family. From a great-great-grandfather who defended British settlements in nineteenth-century New Zealand, to his father, a colonial officer sent to Africa in the 1920s and who later returned to raise a family there—these were intrepid men who traveled to exotic lands to conquer, build, and bear witness. And there was Aidan, who became a journalist covering Africa in the 1990s, a decade marked by terror and genocide. After encountering the violence in Somalia, Uganda, and Rwanda, Aidan retreated to his family’s house in Kenya where he discovered the Zanzibar chest his father left him. Intricately hand-carved, the chest contained the diaries of his father’s best friend, Peter Davey, an Englishman who had died under obscure circumstances five decades before. With the papers as his guide, Hartley embarked on a journey not only to unlock the secrets of Davey’s life, but his own. “The finest account of a war correspondent’s psychic wracking since Michael Herr’s Dispatches.” —Rian Malan, author of My Traitor’s Heart

Download or read book Community Chest written by and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voluntary contributions by private citizens and corporations in amounts ranging from a few coins to millions of dollars are a major factor in the maintenance of the American way of life. It is difficult to imagine the consequences if this source of support for the work of religious bodies, health and welfare agencies, and educational and research institutions were materially reduced. This case study, focused on Indianapolis, examines a critical mass fund-raising and giving program. Community chests in many communities evolved into the present-day United Way. In design, scope, and detail this study was without precedent when it was initially published in the 1950s. But "Community Chest "is more than an examination of local problems of fund raising. It also makes a decisive contribution to knowledge of philanthropic practice that is of general relevance to the social sciences. The book asks and seeks answers to the most ticklish issues of philanthropic fund raising: What may agencies expect in contributions from different social segments? How does one begin to estimate the need for philanthropic dollars in a given community? How can the public guard the interests of both ultimate recipients of assistance and donors? In short, what elements are crucial to success or failure in financing voluntary agencies, not merely in terms of money but with full regard for the needs and potentials of citizens and the community as a whole? Sociologists, welfare personnel, and professionals involved in financial development will find in this book an extraordinarv amount of material, both factual and interpretive, suggesting new approaches to the perplexing problems of community fund raising. A new introduction prepared by Carl Milofsky is a fascinating study of the tensions involved in the selection of the senior author, John R. Seeley, and of the critical response to this controversial study. This new material itself uniquely contributes to the sociology of knowledge.
