Book excerpt: This is the story of Irish convict/bushranger, Martin Cash as told in his own words. He related his tale to a hard-drinking mob at the Lord Rodney Hotel on Hobart Town's waterfront. Undoubtedly the old lags interjected with their own recollections and contempt for their British masters. It is easy to imagine the raucous scene as the hardened drinkers tossed back their rum and whipped each other to escalating fury. The result is a vivid account of the brutality of the convict system in Van Diemen's Land from the viewpoint of a victim caught in the net. Although Cash's account is unflinching in its depiction of cruelty and corruption, it is not without humour as Cash and his paramour trick their pursuers and make fools of the landed aristocracy.

Book excerpt: For millennia, people have given their children toys to help them learn about the world around them. The toys children play with demonstrate how cultures from around the world can be both different and exactly the same. When the early colonists arrived in Australia, they found that Aboriginal children were playing games and using toys that were similar to those from Europe. Find out about physics and toys, the importance of safety, toys and business and how toys have changed over time. Included are descriptions of colonial games and traditional Indigenous games, as well as a look at where toys in Australia come from now. The style of living we take for granted in Australia today was very different in the past. Many everyday tasks involved using tools and implements that are unrecognisable in our modern world. The Australian Aboriginal history of daily life, as well as that of the first colonists, all provide intriguing stories of how we all used to live and how we gradually moved on to depending on gadgets, fast food and other modern ways of life that our ancestors from the past would find amazing.

For someone is hacking a bloody trail throughout the Southeast looking for Arnie’s younger brother, a boy with Asperger’s Syndrome who possesses an unusual skill with numbers that could make a lot of money and that has already gotten a lot of people killed—and has even more of the deadliest people alive willing to do anything it takes to exploit him. As Dane joins in the hunt to find the boy, it swiftly becomes a race against the clock that has Dane entangled in a web of secrets involving everyone from the Filipino Mafia to distrusting federal agents to some of hardest southern outlaws he’s ever known.
