Book Synopsis The Pirates and the Mouse by : Bob Levin
Download or read book The Pirates and the Mouse written by Bob Levin and published by Fantagraphics Books. This book was released on 2003-07-09 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During a time of unprecedented political, social, and cultural upheaval in U.S. history, one of the fiercest battles was ignited by a comic book. In 1963, the San Francisco Chronicle made 21-year-old Dan O'Neill the youngest syndicated cartoonist in American newspaper history. As O'Neill delved deeper into the emerging counterculture, his strip, Odd Bodkins, became stranger and stranger and more and more provocative, until the papers in the syndicate dropped it and the Chronicle let him go. The lesson that O'Neill drew from this was that what America most needed was the destruction of Walt Disney. O'Neill assembled a band of rogue cartoonists called the Air Pirates (after a group of villains who had bedeviled Mickey Mouse in comic books and cartoons). They lived communally in a San Francisco warehouse owned by Francis Ford Coppola and put out a comic book, Air Pirates Funnies, that featured Disney characters participating in very un-Disneylike behavior, provoking a mammoth lawsuit for copyright and trademark infringements and hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages. Disney was represented by one of San Francisco's top corporate law firms and the Pirates by the cream of the counterculture bar. The lawsuit raged for 10 years, from the trial court to the US Supreme Court and back again.

Book Synopsis Memories of Childhood by : Martin Nicholson
Download or read book Memories of Childhood written by Martin Nicholson and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-09-21 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Nicholson was born in 1937 in Rio de Janeiro, where his father was working for Shell. He had sailed across the Atlantic twice before he was three years old, the second time just days after the start of the Second World War when the family returned to South America to live near Buenos Aires in Argentina. They returned to England in 1946 to experience the realities of 'austerity Britain' of the 1950s. They faced the bitter winter of 1946-1947 in Sutton Coldfield, near Birmingham, then moved to Twickenham, south west London, where they made their first real home. Like many middle class English boys of that era he went through the discipline of boarding school, in Swanage on the south coast, and at Oundle School, Peterborough. This book - the first of a projected series of four volumes that will take his memoirs up to retirement from the Diplomatic Service in 1997 - tells the story of a childhood constantly on the move, but always in the bosom of a secure and loving family - his parents and three siblings.

Book Synopsis Immortal Last Words by : Terry Breverton
Download or read book Immortal Last Words written by Terry Breverton and published by Quercus Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03-29 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immortal Last Words is a fascinating, diverse collection of history's most uplifting, entertaining and thought-provoking dying remarks and final farewells. The 370 entries in this book have been drawn from some of history's greatest statesmen, poets, scientists, novelists and warriors - the eminent men and women who have shaped events over the last four and a half millennia and whose final recorded words have often inspired great deeds or shed light on the nature of the human condition. There are also entries are from less well- known individuals who did not make such an impact on history but whose dying words are equally noteworthy as they encapsulate the spirit of the times or simply reflect the character of the speaker. And finally, the pages of this book contain the last words of some of most ignoble personalities in history - the monsters and maniacs whose final defiant utterances prompt us to reflect on the nature of evil and man's inhumanity to man. Arranged chronologically from antiquity to the present day, each entry is accompanied by contextual information giving a brief biography of the author and an explanation of the circumstances that gave rise to the quotation. Some of the sentiments expressed are unbelievably sad while others are optimistic; some final words have become famous while others have remained obscure, but all reflect the follies and greatness of mankind - its heroes and villains, war and peace and the absolute power of language to change our feelings and challenge our minds. Sample entries include: Buddha 'Strive for your own liberation with diligence'; Vespasian 'Dear me, I believe I am becoming a god'; Thomas Hobbes, 'I am about to take my last voyage, a great leap in the dark'; Robespierre 'Death is the commencement of immortality!'; George Washington'Tis well'; John Keats 'Here lies one whose name was writ in water'; John Maynard Keynes'I should have drunk more champagne'; Salvador Dalí 'I do not believe in my death'; Keith Floyd 'I've not felt this well for ages.'

Book Synopsis Abuse or Punishment? by : Marie-Aimée Cliche
Download or read book Abuse or Punishment? written by Marie-Aimée Cliche and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2014-11-26 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At one time, the use of corporal punishment by parents in child-rearing was considered normal, but in the second half of the nineteenth century this begin to change, in Quebec as well as the rest of the Western world. It was during this period that the extent of ill-treatment inflicted on children—treatment once excused as good child-rearing practice—was discovered. This book analyzes both the advice provided to parents and the different forms of child abuse within families. Cliche derives her information from family magazines, reports and advice columns in newspapers, people’s life stories, the records of the Montreal Juvenile Court, and even comic strips. Two dates are given particular focus: 1920, with the trial of the parents of Aurore Gagnon, which sensitized the public to the phenomenon of “child martyrs;” and 1940, with the advent of the New Education movement, which was based on psychology rather than strict discipline and religious doctrine. There has always been child abuse. What has changed is society’s sensitivity to it. That is why defenders of children’s rights call for the repeal of Section 43 of the Canadian Criminal Code, which authorizes “reasonable” corporal punishment. Abuse or Punishment? considers not only the history of violence towards children in Quebec but the history of public perception of this violence and what it means for the rest of Canada.

Book Synopsis Comics as History, Comics as Literature by : Annessa Ann Babic
Download or read book Comics as History, Comics as Literature written by Annessa Ann Babic and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology hosts a collection of essays examining the role of comics as portals for historical and academic content, while keeping the approach on an international market versus the American one. Few resources currently exist showing the cross-disciplinary aspects of comics. Some of the chapters examine the use of Wonder Woman during World War II, the development and culture of French comics, and theories of Locke and Hobbs in regards to the state of nature and the bonds of community. More so, the continual use of comics for the retelling of classic tales and current events demonstrates that the genre has long passed the phase of for children’s eyes only. Additionally, this anthology also weaves graphic novels into the dialogue with comics.
