Download or read book No Better Death written by John Crawford and published by Exisle Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Gallipoli has been told many times, but few first-hand accounts exist, and none shows such acute observation as this one by the commander who led the assault on Chunuk Bair: Lieutenant-Colonel W. G. Malone. His diary and letters reveal a man of honesty, wit, knowledge and courage — and tell a moving story we should never forget. Lieutenant-Colonel W. G. Malone, commanding officer of the Wellington Battalion of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force at Gallipoli, is best known for his capture and heroic defence of Chunuk Bair on 8 August 1915. A gifted leader of men, he planned the action with his characteristic good sense and attention to detail. Chunuk Bair was held for two days before being lost in the last of a series of furious counter-attacks. By then William Malone was dead, and New Zealand had lost one of its finest officers. It emerged later that Malone had left behind a detailed diary and a large number of letters to family members and friends. Always shrewd and observant, Malone charts almost daily the events in the year leading up to Chunuk Bair: his preparation for war, the training camps, the voyage to Egypt, landing at Gallipoli, and life on the peninsula during the eventful few months from April to August 1915. Renowned for his imposition of tight discipline, Malone was nevertheless a caring and thoughtful leader of his men, always concerned for their welfare. He also loved his family, and in particular his second wife Ida. His letters to her are among the most moving in this book, and his tender concern for their young family back home shines through. The story of his older sons, three of whom also served in the Great War, forms part of the narrative too, a family story which continues right up to 2012, when Malone’s great-great-grandson was killed on active service in Afghanistan.
Book Synopsis Around The World With Mark Twain by : Robert Cooper
Download or read book Around The World With Mark Twain written by Robert Cooper and published by Skyhorse. This book was released on 2012-04-12 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On July 14, 1895, Samuel Langhorne Clemens, fifty-nine years old and deeply in debt, boarded a night train to Cleveland, launching a performance tour designed to alleviate his financial woes, and, more importantly, resuscitate his alter ego, Mark Twain. The journey took him to Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, India, and South Africa, and led to the resurrection of Twain as a celebrity. Equal parts travelogue, social history, and biography, Around the World with Mark Twain paints a decidedly different portrait of Clemens: a more tragic, darker figure who faced financial ruin and personal loss throughout his life. Around the World with Mark Twain delights while deepening our understanding of this magnificent personality.

Book excerpt: This book is the result of the cooperation between Cambridge Scholars Press and the Centre for Applied Linguistics of the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment of Santiago de Cuba. The present volume is a peer-reviewed selection from the papers written in English that were presented at the 9th International Symposium on Social Communication (Santiago de Cuba, January 24-28, 2005). The symposia are held by the Santiago-based institution every two years. Since their inception in 1987, these meetings have provided an excellent opportunity for scientific exchange among scholars from all continents, through the presentation of papers, keynote speeches, and workshops focusing on the most current and recent results of linguistics and other related disciplines that are also invited to the event. This volume includes 34 papers subdivided in eight sections: General Linguistics (8), Phonetics (5), Lexicology (3), Corpus Linguistics (2), Natural Language Processing (9), Foreign Languages (3), Mass Media (2) and Art, Ethnology and Folklore (2). These articles provide an excellent overview of the current state of research from around the world. Scholars came from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Cuba, Spain, United States, France, Greek, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Portugal and the United Kingdom. It is important to highlight the presence in this book of papers by some of the world’s leading researchers in linguistics, including Prof. Dr. Anton Nijholt, from Twente University, Enschede, The Netherlands; Prof. Dr. Nicoletta Calzolari, director of the prestigious Institute of Computational Linguistics of Pisa, Italy; Prof. Dr. Michael Zock, from the Scientific Research Center of France; Prof. Dr. Dieter Fensel, from the Digital Enterprise Research Institute of Leopold-Franzens University, Innsbruck, Austria; Prof Dr. Gloria Corpas Pastor from the University of Malaga, Spain; and the doctors Iñaki Alegria, Xabier Arregi and Xabier Artola, from the IXA Group of the Basque Country University.
Book Synopsis Living in Utopia by : Lucy Sargisson
Download or read book Living in Utopia written by Lucy Sargisson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Utopia is, literally, the good place that is no place. Utopias reveal people's dreams and desires and they may gesture towards different and better ways of being. But they are rarely considered as physical, observable phenomena. In this book Sargisson and Sargent, both established writers on utopian theory, turn their attention to real-life utopian communities. The book is based on their fieldwork and extensive archival research in New Zealand, a country with a special place in the history of utopianism. A land of opportunity for settlers with dreams of a better life, New Zealand has, per capita, more intentional communities - groups of people who have chosen to live and sometimes work together for a common purpose - than any country in the world. Sargisson and Sargent draw on the experiences of more than fifty such communities, to offer the first academic survey of this form of living utopian experiment. In telling the story of the New Zealand experience, Living in Utopia provides both transferable lessons in community, cooperation and social change and a unique insight into the utopianism at the heart of politics, society, and everyday life.
