Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walter Hilton's The Scale of Perfection maintains a secure place among the major religious treatises composed in fourteenth-century England. This guide to the contemplative life, written in two books of more than 40,000 words each, is notable for its careful explorations of its religious themes and also as a monument of Middle English prose. Its popularity is attested by the fact that some forty-two manuscripts containing one or both of the books survive, with a relatively large number of manuscipts with Book I alone, which suggests it may have been the more popular of the two. Hilton (born c. 1343) was a member of the religious order known as the Augustinian Canons. There is reason to believe that be was trained in canon law and studied at the University of Cambridge. He was the author of a number of works in English and Latin, all much shorter than The Scale. He died at the Augustinian Priory of Thurgarton in Nottinghamshire in 1396. On the basis of the content of certain of his works it can be safely inferred that he was actively involved in some of the religious controversies current in England in the 1380s and 1390s, and his principal concern, evident in The Scale , is to defend orthodox belief, especially in the conduct of the contemplative life.

Book excerpt: Kevin Goodrich' s lively, devotional, and practical guide to the teachings of fourteenth- century mystic, Walter Hilton of Thurgarton, one of the great medieval figures of the English spiritual tradition is the most accessible full-length introduction to Hilton written. It is the ideal accompaniment to Goodrich's anthology of Hilton's writings, The Greatest Desire. A near contemporary of Julian of Norwich, Hilton was widely read in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries by laity and clergy, as well as those in monasteries, who sought his wise counsel and penetrating insights into the spiritual life. Kindling the Fire draws from all of Hilton' s extant writings, including his two major works, The Scale of Perfection and The Mixed Life, and will introduce readers to the English mystical tradition and the spiritual counsel of Hilton, not as disinterested observers, but as apprentices of the Spirit. Goodrich invites readers to intentionally make their life a pilgrimage, learning from the wisdom of a trusted guide, whose teachings reflect not only his own education and experience, but the venerable tradition of medieval English spirituality.

Book excerpt: The Greatest Desire distils some of the wisest spiritual insight and guidance of the fourteenth-century mystic Walter Hilton into short readings that may be used to deepen your prayer life and to bring you into closer relationship with God. Walter Hilton was widely read in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, offering profound spiritual wisdom in works such as The Scale of Perfection, from which these readings are taken (translated into modern English). Today, Hilton is less celebrated than his near contemporaries Julian of Norwich, Richard Rolle and the author of The Cloud of Unknowing, yet through his writings we can learn of life in the Spirit long forgotten. The Greatest Desire offers an ideal way to rediscover the words of this important mystic. This collection is edited by the Rev. Dr Kevin Goodrich, OP, a friar in the Anglican Order of Preachers (Dominicans). Father Goodrich is a spiritual director, theologian, and author.

Mystic Bonfires is for students, scholars, and practitioners of ministry, theology, and spiritual formation. It explores theology and theory and shares insights for practice and prayer. Readers will encounter classical concepts about the spiritual life and how to apply these concepts to their ministries in faithful and creative ways. Mystic Bonfires includes questions for students in academic and formation settings as well as project ideas for congregations. Mystic Bonfires explores the intersection of spiritual theology and practical theology. Walter Hilton, a 14th century English mystic and a contemporary of Julian of Norwich serves as a case study for the intersection of these fields called practical spiritual theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a marked increase of interest in the art of spiritual direction in recent decades. Yet in many circles, especially in ecumenical and interfaith contexts, it is unclear what grounds the practice of this ancient art. As a tradition’s practice of spiritual direction expresses its particular theology, which, in turn, is shaped by its unique history, this work explains that ecumenical spiritual direction must make and retain the tri-perspective of history, theology, and method that faithfully reflects each tradition’s distinctives as requisite for true ecumenical enrichment. The importance of this trinocular vision is brought into sharp focus through a comparative study of Ignatius of Loyola and John Calvin, where points of continuity and discontinuity between the Ignatian and Reformed traditions underscore the importance of this work’s thesis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE LADDER OF PERFECTION is a guide to the contemplative life in which the soul is reformed to the image and likeness of God. Book One provides an overview of contemplation and its prerequisites, a discussion of prayer and meditation, and a path for dealing with sins, both obvious and hidden, through self-awareness, humility, and the love of God. By these means one passes through the darkness known to another English mystic as "the cloud of unknowing." Book Two distinguishes between the reform of the soul that is in faith only and the reform that is in both faith and feeling. Loving Jesus is the way through the initial darkness that one sees after withdrawal from the world of the senses, and God gives light to those who persevere in this work. The spiritual eye is opened in a way that cannot be arrived at by mere intellectual study, nor by individual effort. Contemplation is given by God. After further progress, the soul knows itself as it is, and Jesus speaks directly to her.
