Book excerpt: Excerpt from Walks and Talks About Historic Boston Dear old Boston, we, your sons, hold you in tender remem brance tonight.' Like all your absent children, we ever turn to you in loving thought and affection, and when the sands of life are nearly run, we want our last walk to be in the old fa miliar streets, we want our last look to be on the old familiar faces, and as the twilight deepens into darkness we want to sink to our eternal night, our soul exalted by memories of you. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Walks and Talks About Boston Strangers have difficulty in finding their way about Boston on account of the irregularity of its streets. It will help if it is borne in mind that Boston, like New York, was formerly a peninsula and that Washington Street traverses it lengthwise as Broadway does New York. The North Station, which is the terminal for trains from the north and east, is near the northern end, which begins at Haymarket Square. Canal Street, leading out of Haymarket Square, ends at the North Station. Leading at right angles from Washington Street, Summer Street brings one to the South Terminal Station, where trains from the south and west arrive and depart. Winter Street, directly opposite Summer Street, leads to Tremont Street, which runs parallel with Washington Street, and to Boston Common. On the Common, at the head of Winter Street, may be found the Park Street Subway Station, where cars may be taken for any part of the city or suburbs, either directly or by transfer. Leading off Washington Street, at right angles, farther south, is Essex Street, which leads directly to the South Terminal Station. Opposite Essex Street is Boylston Street, which leads by the Common and Public Garden to the Back Bay District. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular History of Boston Some ten years ago the writer of this volume came to Boston, a stranger, for the purpose of reading in the Public Library and obtaining work as a journalist. Becoming deeply interested in works of local history, especially in those of Drake, and being unacquainted with society, he resolved to visit all the old historic places in and about Boston, in hours needed for exercise, and to study their associations. About a year ago the publishers asked him to prepare a young people's history of Boston, and to seek to make it popular and entertaining, after the methods of the Zig zag books. It was a pleasure to attempt this work, as it revived the memories of the solitary walks ten years ago, and brought into use the material then collected. The newspapers, also, have been laid under contribution. For the materials of one of the most amusing chapters, I must acknowledge obligations to the Reminiscences of a veteran. Every summer there arrive people from different parts of the nation who have a curiosity about the history of Boston, or about its present activities, which they would gladly gratify, as well as possible, in a few days' stay here. Perhaps they have auces tors among the fifteen thousand people who united in the capture of Louisburg, or the twenty thousand people who, thirty years later, defied King George. I recollect what I would gladly have done and said, first. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis A History of Boston by : Caleb Hopkins Snow
Download or read book A History of Boston written by Caleb Hopkins Snow and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Boston: The Metropolis of Massachusetts, From Its Origin to the Present Period The reader may expect to find in this book some account of the persecutions, which drove the first settlers of New England from their native country, and some brief notices of the settlements, that were made or attempted to be made, in various parts of the United States, before the arrival of Governor Winthrop and the company under him, which laid the foundation of Boston. There taking up our history, I have endeavoured to select from the mass of records, which numerous hands have left to us, those facts which appear to have excited any great or general interest among the inhabitants of this metropolis. To those who are aware of the disadvantages under which I have composed this work, I need offer no apology for the imperfections they may discover iu the execution of it. To others it may be proper to mention, that Mi. Bowen, the publisher, was disappointed in his expectation of the assistance of other gentlemen, and that my engagements with him commenced at least four weeks after his proposals of the 17th April, lS2'l, hud been issued. To enable him to fulfil the terms of those proposals, I was obliged to let the first number appear, on the first of July, before I could possibly know what the succeeding number should contain. The case has been similar with all the other numbers. I have consequently found it necessary to put my notes to the press, almost in the same form in which I had taken them, at the hazard of being compelled afterwards to exclude other matter, perhaps more important.
