Book excerpt: Getting lost and feeling found... "I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in." John Muir, John of the Mountains Walking is medicine for the mind. It helps us slow down and think things through. It also helps us perk up and generate new ideas. There are few activities as readily available and revitalising as a brisk walk, or as soothing and stimulating as a long walk. Discover the wonderful things that can happen when you set out on two feet. Studies show a strong link between the mental state while walking and innovative ideas or strokes of insight. From Aristotle's strolls with his students to Steve Jobs's famous walking meetings, walking not only inspires creativity but also attention, presence and perspective. Taking your mind for a walk nourishes connection with yourself, it allows exploration of the self and the world around us and invigorates all of our senses. Walk to welcome the day "An early morning walk is a blessing for the whole day." - Henry David Thoreau Walk to get some perspective "I'd walk and think about my entire life. I'd find my strength again, far from everything that had made my life ridiculous." - Cheryl Strayed Walk to become more present "Suddenly I came out of my thoughts to notice everything around me again-the catkins on the willows, the lapping of the water, the leafy patterns of the shadows across the path." - Rebecca Solnit

It helps us slow down and think things through. It also helps us perk up and generate new ideas. There are few activities as readily available and revitalizing as a brisk walk, or as soothing and stimulating as a long walk. Wonderful things can happen when we set out on two feet. Within these pages, you will find stories from artists, designers, writers, psychologists and speakers who are inspired by the effect of pacing outdoors. You will hear of walks in the city, hikes through woods at dawn and epic adventures involving long journeys on foot. No matter the scale of the tale, the writer offers lessons they learned of a simple, human nature that we can all understand. In each chapter you will discover suggestions and ideas about how to create simple daily habits from the writer's thinking. In a world where so much of the noise around us suggests we are not good enough as we are, and that we must seek to change, these accounts try to do something different. They aim instead to invite a stroll into the complex pathways of the mind to discover the beauty of our own quirky individuality.

In “Thirteen Days,” passengers on a cruise line are quarantined, to horrifying and hilarious effect. And “Hyena” begins simply: “That was the day the hyena came for him, and never mind that there were no hyenas in the South of France, and especially not in Pont-Saint-Esprit—it was there and it came for him.” A virtuoso of the short form, T.C. Boyle returns with an inventive, uproarious, and masterfully told collection of short stories characterized by biting satire, resonant wit, and a boundless, irrepressible imagination.

Based on the classic song, this beautifully illustrated picture book celebrates rain and all its fun. Jump in puddles, raise umbrellas, and dance with joy through the pages of this gorgeous story. Sweet and positive in its message, with bright, eye-catching art, this book is an uplifting celebration of rain! 'Singing in the Rain' is one of the world's best-loved songs and the centrepiece of one of my favourite films. I love the song's positive message, and the iconic sequence of Gene Kelly dancing in the rain always raises a smile. As adults we tend to think of rain as an inconvenience rather than the joyous thing that it is. Next time it rains, step outside, feel the rain on your face, and give the clouds up above your biggest smile!'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The astonishing, Job-like story of how an existence filled with loss, suffering, questioning, and anger became a life filled with shocking and incomprehensible peace and joy. Vaneetha Risner contracted polio as an infant, was misdiagnosed, and lived with widespread paralysis. She lived in and out of the hospital for ten years and, after each stay, would return to a life filled with bullying. When she became a Christian, though, she thought things would get easier, and they did: carefree college days, a dream job in Boston, and an MBA from Stanford where she met and married a classmate. But life unraveled. Again. She had four miscarriages. Her son died because of a doctor's mistake. And Vaneetha was diagnosed with post-polio syndrome, meaning she would likely become a quadriplegic. And then her husband betrayed her and moved out, leaving her to raise two adolescent daughters alone. This was not the abundant life she thought God had promised her. But, as Vaneetha discovered, everything she experienced was designed to draw her closer to Christ as she discovered "that intimacy with God in suffering can be breathtakingly beautiful."

Book excerpt: Can two people brought together by desperate circumstances help one another heal, and maybe even begin a new life? New York Times bestselling author Charles Martin’s Send Down the Rain answers the questions of what it means—and what level of sacrifice it takes—to truly love someone. Allie is still recovering from the loss of her family’s beloved waterfront restaurant on Florida’s Gulf Coast when she loses her second husband to a terrifying highway accident. Devastated and losing hope, she shudders to contemplate the future—until a cherished person from her past returns. Joseph has been adrift for many years, wounded in both body and spirit and unable to come to terms with the trauma of his Vietnam War experiences. Just as he resolves to abandon his search for peace and live alone in a remote cabin in the Carolina mountains, he discovers a mother and her two small children lost in the forest. A man of character and strength, he instinctively steps in to help them get back to their home in Florida. There he will return to his own hometown—and witness the accident that launches a bittersweet reunion with his childhood sweetheart, Allie. When Joseph offers to help Allie rebuild her restaurant, it seems the flame may reignite—until a forty-five-year-old secret begins to emerge, threatening to destroy all hope for their second chance at love. Send Down the Rain will take you on a journey that spans the sweltering migrant worker routes of south Florida, muddy battlefields of Vietnam, thickets of northwest North Carolina, and the idyllic shores of America’s most beautiful beach (Cape San Blas). At the story’s center lies the question: What does it mean—and what level of sacrifice does it take—to truly love someone? Praise for Send Down the Rain: “Charles Martin understands the power of story and he uses it to alter the souls and lives of both his characters and his readers.”—Patti Callahan Henry, New York Times bestselling author Full-length, stand-alone novel Includes discussion questions for book clubs Also by bestselling author Charles Martin: The Mountain Between Us, Chasing Fireflies, When Crickets Cry, and The Letter Keeper

Promoting the concept of “the road of regrets”, this book presents a five-stage process for the hypnotherapist to work through with clients (adults and children aged 5+). The process involves identifying and acknowledging regrets; working through the regrets and associated emotions; taking any necessary action before releasing the regrets and emotions; and finally moving on to plan for the future. The book contains over 60 customisable scripts, guidance notes and appendices to promote ideas for practice. The scripts offer a variety of methodology to choose from: regression (including past lives); metaphors (Ericksonian); benefits approach; Gestalt therapy and solution-focused. The appendices include practical resources such as questionnaires, checklists, summaries, forms, and worksheets for exercises which the hypnotherapist can utilise in sessions (individual or group). This practical volume will be of use to student hypnotherapists, trainers and training schools, supervisors, newly qualified and experienced hypnotherapists. Although the main focus of the book is regrets and associated emotions, the book can be used for an abundance of other concerns e.g. lack of confidence or self-esteem; fears; anxiety and panic attacks.

I birthed three children of my own in 1986 having had my first child at age sixteen. Dropping out of high school at age fifteen. Later birthing two more children at age nineteen and around twenty-three. Still struggling to find my purpose in life, taking to the streets at an early age only to realize, looking for love in all the wrong places would lead me down a path of self-destruction. Soon I found myself walking in my own mother's footsteps, birthing children that I wasn't caring for, raising, nurturing, and teaching them how to grow, and to become smart, respectable, loving, moral, and vibrant young men and women. Later in life in the early 2000s, I went back to school and received my diploma. This was a huge accomplishment for me! I knew without education I would be stagnant in my growth in life. Another great accomplishment happen also in the early 2000s. I met a nice guy who later became the love of my life, who later on became my husband, Romeo Lewis, who inspired me to be a better woman, mother, person, etc. A man that made me fill whole again! A man that became a huge father figure that my children didn't have. A man that loved all his children and grandchildren as well, that loves his family unconditionally. I want to share my story to inspire and help other young adults out there that maybe facing some of the same hardships as myself. Don't give up and don't give in, we all have a purpose to fulfill in one's lifetime. Keep the faith, and if you fall get back up! Ecclesiastes 9:11 reads, "The race is not won to the swift, but to the one who endureth till the end." PS: if I can do it, so can you!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Song Walking explores the politics of land, its position in memories, and its foundation in changing land-use practices in western Maputaland, a borderland region situated at the juncture of South Africa, Mozambique, and Swaziland. Angela Impey investigates contrasting accounts of this little-known geopolitical triangle, offsetting textual histories with the memories of a group of elderly women whose songs and everyday practices narrativize a century of borderland dynamics. Drawing evidence from women’s walking songs (amaculo manihamba)—once performed while traversing vast distances to the accompaniment of the European mouth-harp (isitweletwele)—she uncovers the manifold impacts of internationally-driven transboundary environmental conservation on land, livelihoods, and local senses of place. This book links ethnomusicological research to larger themes of international development, environmental conservation, gender, and local economic access to resources. By demonstrating that development processes are essentially cultural processes and revealing how music fits within this frame, Song Walking testifies to the affective, spatial, and economic dimensions of place, while contributing to a more inclusive and culturally apposite alignment between land and environmental policies and local needs and practices.

The sensory experience of water falling from the heavens evokes feelings ranging from fear to gratitude and has inspired many works of art. Using unique and expertly developed art-historical case studies – from prehistoric cave paintings up to photography and cinema – this book casts new light on a theme that is both ecological and iconological, both natural and cultural-historical. Barbara Baert’s distinctive prose makes Looking Into the Rain. Magic, Moisture, Medium a profound reading experience, particularly at a moment when disruptions of the harmony among humans, animals, and nature affect all of us and the entire planet. Barbara Baert is Professor of Art History at KU Leuven. She teaches in the field of Iconology, Art Theory & Analysis, and Medieval Art. Her work links knowledge and questions from the history of ideas, cultural anthropology and philosophy, and shows great sensitivity to cultural archetypes and their symptoms in the visual arts.
