Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story my father told me long ago goes like this. Sometime during his Army career, at a time and place unknown, probably 1943 or early 1944, he would routinely check a certain bulletin board for the names or numbers of those soldiers slated to go overseas. One day, he noticed his name had "flopped" from the "not going overseas" list to the "going overseas" list. My father also noticed he had been "switched" with another soldier who, the day before, was going overseas, and suddenly, he was not but my father was. This usually did not happen. So he decided to try and find out how he had been "switched." He wrote a letter to an off-base name as high in the Army hierarchy as he could find. He explained the mysterious switch and waited. He wanted to know how and why his name had been switched with some other guy. He was twenty-two and away from familiar surroundings for the first time and was panicked and in fear. He prayed. After some time, my dad was summoned to the office of his camp head honcho who told him: "I'm not sure who you are or who you know, but I am holding orders to personally transfer you to any place you want to go in the Continental United States for the duration of the war." My father said, "Florida." His military record was skeletal at best. I decided to find out where he was and when. That is the story of this book.

He was an artillery officer in command of a battery of 25-pdr field guns and saw action from Normandy to the final surrender of Nazi Germany. Capt. Davies was present at the Normandy battles, the fierce fighting for s'Hertogenbosch and the Battle of Arnhem.During the course of the war, Capt. Davies kept a diary and also snatched a few photographs on his treasured camera. When the opportunity arose Capt. Davies liberated a camera from a fallen SS officer and, after the war, had the film developed. The film contained graphic images of the war from the German side of the line.Seventy years on from the events, the wartime diary, the photographs of the guns and the photographs taken by the dead SS officer were the inspiration for the son of Capt. Davies, television producer and writer Gwilym Davies, to undertake an emotional return to the battlefields, which his father had described in his diary. The result of that pilgrimage is an important new book which builds upon the wartime diary and the photographs to produce a powerful record of one man's war service with the guns of the 53rd Welsh Division. The book also contrasts the experience of Capt. Davies with those of the Germans on the other side of the line. Gwilym Davies is himself an accomplished photographer and his photographs of the 70th anniversary celebrations and the memorials provide a poignant counterpoint to the events of 1944.

Book excerpt: There are several thousand, if not millions of married men who are in the closet today. For the majority of these men, dating, marriage, family and careers have kept them there. Fears of separation from family, loss of friends, and loss of job are those things which cause them to hide behind the mask of heterosexual male. These men had little if no opportunity to explore this after adolescence. Many lived in small towns across the country. They have lived with fear, anxiety and guilt. Many successfully hid it from their wives. Some did not. The evolution of the Internet opened many doors for these men. Statistics prove that coming out usually ends in divorce. Not My Father's Footsteps takes a look at one such journey an odyssey that in less than a year took him from inside the closet to a new life outside. It is a journey of love and torment, and finding love again. It is the story of seedy spas and confinement in the psychiatric ward for a brief time. By going back to his roots, he has been able to come out of his darkness and into the light of being a gay man.

Book excerpt: The Hard Bargain describes in vivid detail and elegant prose the clash of wills between a famous father and his hard-driving middle son. Richard Tucker, the American superstar tenor from the golden age of the Metropolitan Opera, demanded that his son become a surgeon. Rejecting his father’s wishes, David wanted to follow his father onto the opera stage. Their struggle over David’s future—by turns hilarious and humiliating, wise and loving—is played out in medical and musical venues around the world. The father and son strike a bargain, the hard bargain of the title, which permitted both dreams to flicker for a decade until one (the right one, it turns out) bursts into sustaining flame. This heartfelt memoir about a son’s struggle against the looming power of a magnetic father is conveyed in a moving narrative that one reviewer has called “the most dramatic exploration of the private life of a legendary singer in the annals of opera literature.”

Book excerpt: A true story of sacrificing everything for family, living with nothing but hope, then sharing generously all they received to discover the greatest riches of all. Tani Adewumi didn’t know what Boko Haram was or why they had threatened his family. All he knew was that when his parents told the family was going to America, Tani thought it was the start of a great adventure rather than an escape. In truth, his family’s journey to the United States was nothing short of miraculous—and the miracles were just beginning. Tani’s father, Kayode, became a dishwasher and Uber driver while Tani’s mother, Oluwatoyin, cleaned buildings, while the family lived in a homeless shelter. Eight-year-old Tani jumped into his new life with courage and perseverance—and an unusual mind for chess. After joining the chess club in his public school, Tani practiced his game for hours in the evenings at the shelter. And less than a year after he learned to play, Tani won the New York State chess championship. A young boy with an aptitude for chess? Absolutely. But if you ask Tani Adewumi, he will tell you he believes in miracles and one happened to him and his family. This story will inspire, delight, and challenge you to believe, too.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the tensions and tenderness between fathers and sons in this masterpiece of narrative psychology! “We live in a story-shaped world,” as the editors say, and Between Fathers and Sons: Critical Incident Narratives in the Development of Men's Lives shows how the stories we construct come to shape our perceptions of the world and of ourselves. The incidents recounted here are more than just moving, funny, or painful stories of fathers and sons. Each is a myth that helped form the authors’social and moral identity. This blend of feeling and intellect, story and analysis makes Between Fathers and Sons a work of art as well as a work of psychology. The contributors--many of them pioneers of narrative therapy--bring unique insight to bear on their own stories. Using a broad array of narrative forms, from the soliliquy to the multiple narrator, they explore and analyze themes of silence, mystery, respect, sports, self-reliance, and longing for continuity. In the stories you will find in Between Fathers and Sons: a father's disappointed silence is transformed as it resonates through four generations a Korean immigrant faces the differences between his ideals of fatherhood and his son's American view a father-son fishing trip ends with the biggest fish ever--or no fish at all betrayed by his stepfather, a boy seeks guidance from stories of his dead father a Baptist preacher helps his son make an agonizing choice a grown man's memory of a childhood event gives him new insight into his father's identity and their relationship Between Fathers and Sons is a landmark volume in father-son relationships and in narrative therapy. It is destined to become a classic in the field.
