Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that we should regard walking and talking in a single rhythmic vision. In doing so, it contributes to the theory of prosody, our understanding of respiration and looking, and, in sum, to the particular links, across the board, between the human characteristics of bipedal walking and meaningful talk. The author first introduces the philosophical, neurological, anthropological, and aesthetic aspects of the subject in historical perspective, then focuses on rhetoric and introduces a tension between the small and large issues of rhythm. He thereupon turns his attention to the roles of breathing in poetry—as a life-and-death matter, with attention to beats and walking poems. This opens onto technical concepts from the classical traditions of rhetoric and philology. Turning to the relationship between prosody and motion, he considers both animals and human beings as both ostensibly able-bodied creatures and presumptively disabled ones. Finally, he looks at dancing and writing as aspects of walking and talking, with special attention to motion in Arabic and Chinese calligraphy. The final chapters of the book provide a series of interrelated representative case studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fourteen years of NDTV's Walk The Talk Shekhar Gupta has interviewed more than 600 stellar guests-an outstanding feature for one of Indian TV news channel's most respected shows is the wide diversity of its guests. These range from heads of states to national, regional and international politicians and public figures, from Indian and global film stars to Nobel Laureates, scientists, economists, sports stars (not limited to cricket), spiritual gurus, business tycoons, philanthropists and, of course, activists. This book focuses exclusively on political leaders and public figures. Many of these conversations are path-breaking, and some extremely rare. For example, leaders like Sonia Gandhi and former prime minister P.V. Narasimha Rao have never before engaged in freewheeling, recorded conversations in such detail. Others have broken new ground since-Narendra Modi, L.K. Advani, Pranab Mukherjee, Mayawati and even M. Karunanidhi. There are also global thought leaders and heads of state: David Cameron, Henry Kissinger, and Pushp Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda', among others. There is also the rarest of rare interviews with the former RSS chief K.S. Sudarshan. It was challenging to choose just twenty-five political personalities and voices to feature in this selection. And one criterion has been to try and pick those conversations that mark political shifts and change. Hopefully, these will help provide an understanding of recent political history, and how we have reached the point we are at today, in the words of these very significant and interesting people.

Download or read book Walk the Walk and Talk the Talk written by Geoffrey R. Skoll and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a counselor for more than two years at a residential drug abuse treatment facility located in a midwestern city, Geoffrey Skoll observed the many contradictions between the public image of the institution as a center for therapy and treatment and the actual day-to-day practices that go on inside. In this case study, he argues that the facility forces its residents to "walk the walk and talk the talk" by compelling them to subscribe to its rules and ideology, which emphasize the need for them to conform to the image of a dope fiend in order to show "progress" in treatment. Skoll contends that facilities like this do not produce a positive change in the character of their residents as claimed, but instead reinforce negative social identities, especially the residents' powerlessness and subordinate status. Providing treatment mainly for cocaine and heroin abuse, the institution recruits most of its clientele from the criminal justice system and controls them with the threat of returning them to jail. Skoll demonstrates that behind the facility's ethic of caring and openness lurks a fear on the part of the staff that this is a deviant population that must be controlled and that their deviance (their pleasure in taking drugs, for example) may be contagious. He cites specific interactions that force residents to "snitch" on each other over petty misdemeanors in order to perpetuate negative identities such as whore or drug addict. This betrayal by peers further justifies the coercion of residents who resist reform. The drop-out rate from this facility is so high that the "revolving door" has become part of the center's basic structure. Skoll observes that those who remain in the program tolerate its ideology because it is the only one they know. Any attempts to formulate alternative ideologies are simply repressed. Skoll's analysis reveals that this treatment facility aims at thought reform and behavioral control rather than therapy, and he concludes that this approach confirms the addict lifestyle for most of its patients.
