Better yet, he could kick his way up into the sky and look far down onto little people with horses and wagons, street cars and shops. He could flutter-kick out of the way of bullies who called him "Shrimp" and chased him through the streets of Brooklyn.

Book excerpt: Tommo dreamed; Tommo wished, and Tommo believed he could Walk On Air. One day, Takli, Tommo's best friend, made it happen! And for both! She had the power. Takli's Chinese grandfather had left her with the ability to perform wondrous things. Nica, Takli's other best friend, a Chinese whistling duck, taught himself to whistle speak by watching Harpo Marx, of The Marx Brothers. Harpo spoke to his TV brothers in this manner. Tommo and Takli eventually understood every word Nica whistled. When it happened! When the fog surrounded them, Tommo and Takli were walking above a forest of Maples while Nica flew. They felt lost until they saw the golden escalator. Stepping on, they rode it to The Land of Sweet Illusions. This land, made from candy and ice cream, was ruled by King Hagen Das and Queen Bunny Blue. There, the trio met characters from fairy tales and plays: Until—The Sultan of Sour from The Land of Sour tried to overthrow King Hagen. Nica became everyone's hero, wreaking the Sultan's plans and driving him away while all others sat hypnotized. After saving King Hagen's kingdom, Tommo, Takli and Nica left to find the golden escalator that would take them home. Success! But it stopped, OMG in the Land of Sour where everyone and everything was pickley green and mean. There they met two witches, happy Abra and miserable Kadabra. They were then taken by the Cheesed Off Police to the Sultan of Sour. They couldn't leave until they had made all greenies smile and giggle and laugh—an impossibility. But—with h the help of Abra and Kadabra and a plan, Tommo, Takli and Nica made 'em laugh and were allowed to go home. Was it an illusion? Was it real? Only Tommo and Takli knew for sure.

Book excerpt: But today I dream of falling...into the crowd of God-struck people. The pale leaves of their faces tilt up and their white limbs rise to catch me as I am passed among the river of their hands, one to another, am kept by them, am kept. -- from Walking on Air It is the Depression in America, 1931. Twelve-year-old June is a tightrope walker. Performing in her preacher father's revival shows, June travels through cities, makeshift camps, carnivals, and freak shows. The family has no home, no money, no friends -- and faith that is getting thinner than the air upon which June walks. On her journey June examines her life and is torn between loyalty to her family and their religion, and the life she might have. She comes to understand that discovering what the world has in store for her will require facing old family secrets and making some gut-wrenching decisions. Walking on Air is a stirring novel of self-examination, as June balances on a literal and figurative tightrope within the rich and tormented landscape of America during the Depression. Facing the problems of her day, June must use her wit, fire, and strong spirit in order to triumph.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a story about the life of George Livieratos, whose success personified the American Dream. It is a story of an adventurous life filled with endless involvements. As a young child in Greece he becomes an orphan during World War II when both of his parents were killed during a German bombing attack. Joining the merchant marines George traveled around the world and enjoyed the experiences of many cultures. At the age of 21 George immigrated to the United States. After 35 years of hard work and a lot of good times he reaches~ a financial plateau of rich and fame. He had become the Chairman of one of the fastest growing penny stock companies on Wall Street. In 1983 George became one of the first targets of the United States Organized Crime Task Force. This action brought him and his family into the lowest level of human despair, when ultimately led to the death of his son and the destruction of his financial empire. The story is very exciting, it tells how he made his deals and can help to mature students of business overnight. His deal making shows a simple way to do business using common sense and golden rules. George is a capitalist with a liberal heart. It takes courage and power to face the forces of evil, to defy them, provoke them, and ignore their ruthless power. The transcripts of his trials prove his courage and statements. This book tells how he stood up for his principles of loyalty, pride and self -respect. Sacrificing himself and taking a fall. Discover how the resolve of this Greek immigrant's mind and soul empowered him to defy incarceration and even death from his compelled oppressors. In 1986 when he was incarcerated and refused bail, pending his appeal, his morale remained as furious as ever. This story details how the U.S. Justice Department prosecuted and convicted Mr. Livieratos and his co-defendants. The story indicates that interpretation; politics and selective application of the law can lead to the conviction of the best intentioned, while protecting the potentially less desirable. His description of the Federal Prison System is in such detail and simplicity that it can be used by inmates as a Federal Prison manual. His characterization of governmental regulatory agencies depicts them as large bureaucratic quagmires, which complicates and destroys the interest of the victimized citizens. Although considered outrageous by some, he provides opinions on how he thinks organized crime and the mafia was a better alternative to the current drug infested street crime. His human instincts will open the public's eyes and hearts for a better society based on love and care for all humans. The author hopes this book will wake up Americans to strive for equal justice for all, regardless of your social status, color, or religion. The Authors main point is to expose his characterization of the hypocrisy of government officials who don't care about the people, but only the power they posses. His colorful sexual encounters and lustful desires add some levity to an otherwise tragic Greek epic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aviation pioneer Phoebe Fairgrave Omlie (1902-1975) was once one of the most famous women in America. In the 1930s, her words and photographs were splashed across the front pages of newspapers across the nation. The press labeled her “second only to Amelia Earhart among America’s women pilots,” and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt named her among the “eleven women whose achievements make it safe to say that the world is progressing.” Omlie began her career in the early 1920s when aviation was unregulated and open to those daring enough to take it on, male or female. She earned the first commercial pilot’s license issued to a woman and became a successful air racer. During the New Deal, she became the first woman to hold an executive position in federal aeronautics. In Walking on Air, author Janann Sherman presents a thorough and entertaining biography of Omlie. In 1920, the Des Moines, Iowa, native bought herself a Curtiss JN-4D airplane and began learning how to fly and perform stunts with her future husband, pilot Vernon Omlie. She danced the Charleston on the top wing, hung by her teeth below the plane, and performed parachute jumps in the Phoebe Fairgrave Flying Circus. Using interviews, contemporary newspaper articles, archived radio transcripts, and other archival materials, Sherman creates a complex portrait of a daring aviator struggling for recognition in the early days of flight and a detailed examination of how American flying changed over the twentieth century.

The 2,000-plus-mile trail winds through 14 states, stretching along the east coast of the United States, from Georgia to Maine. It snakes through some of the wildest and most spectacular landscapes in North America, as well as through some of its most poverty-stricken and primitive backwoods areas. With his offbeat sensibility, his eye for the absurd, and his laugh-out-loud sense of humour, Bryson recounts his confrontations with nature at its most uncompromising over his five-month journey. An instant classic, riotously funny, A Walk in the Woods will add a whole new audience to the legions of Bill Bryson fans.

Book excerpt: William Addams is dying. Controlling, mercurial, and estranged from his family, he is consumed by the fear that he'll be abandoned by Henry and Susan, his closest friends, the only people on whom he can rely. What he wants is for their faithfulness to last until they take him home to his beloved house to die. But as William's condition worsens, it becomes apparent that his expectations of devotion and loyalty involve not simply a loving commitment but the virtual handing over of his friends' vitality and independence; indeed, William covets their very lives. Filled with penetrating insights and dazzling beauty, Walking on Air explores the shadowy, often disturbing parameters of devotion, demonstrating its inevitable limits as well as its astounding powers of transformation.
