Book Synopsis A History of the Twentieth Century in 100 Maps by : Tim Bryars
Download or read book A History of the Twentieth Century in 100 Maps written by Tim Bryars and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-10-22 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twentieth century was a golden age of mapmaking, an era of cartographic boom. Maps proliferated and permeated almost every aspect of daily life, not only chronicling geography and history but also charting and conveying myriad political and social agendas. Here Tim Bryars and Tom Harper select one hundred maps from the millions printed, drawn, or otherwise constructed during the twentieth century and recount through them a narrative of the century’s key events and developments. As Bryars and Harper reveal, maps make ideal narrators, and the maps in this book tell the story of the 1900s—which saw two world wars, the Great Depression, the Swinging Sixties, the Cold War, feminism, leisure, and the Internet. Several of the maps have already gained recognition for their historical significance—for example, Harry Beck’s iconic London Underground map—but the majority of maps on these pages have rarely, if ever, been seen in print since they first appeared. There are maps that were printed on handkerchiefs and on the endpapers of books; maps that were used in advertising or propaganda; maps that were strictly official and those that were entirely commercial; maps that were printed by the thousand, and highly specialist maps issued in editions of just a few dozen; maps that were envisaged as permanent keepsakes of major events, and maps that were relevant for a matter of hours or days. As much a pleasure to view as it is to read, A History of the Twentieth Century in 100 Maps celebrates the visual variety of twentieth century maps and the hilarious, shocking, or poignant narratives of the individuals and institutions caught up in their production and use.

Download or read book The Curious Map Book written by Ashley Baynton-Williams and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-10-20 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since that ancient day when the first human drew a line connecting Point A to Point B, maps have been understood as one of the most essential tools of communication. Despite differences in language, appearance, or culture, maps are universal touchstones in human civilization. Over the centuries, maps have served many varied purposes; far from mere guides for reaching a destination, they are unique artistic forms, aides in planning commercial routes, literary devices for illuminating a story. Accuracy—or inaccuracy—of maps has been the make-or-break factor in countless military battles throughout history. They have graced the walls of homes, bringing prestige and elegance to their owners. They track the mountains, oceans, and stars of our existence. Maps help us make sense of our worlds both real and imaginary—they bring order to the seeming chaos of our surroundings. With The Curious Map Book, Ashley Baynton-Williams gathers an amazing, chronologically ordered variety of cartographic gems, mainly from the vast collection of the British Library. He has unearthed a wide array of the whimsical and fantastic, from maps of board games to political ones, maps of the Holy Land to maps of the human soul. In his illuminating introduction, Baynton-Williams also identifies and expounds upon key themes of map production, peculiar styles, and the commerce and collection of unique maps. This incredible volume offers a wealth of gorgeous illustrations for anyone who is cartographically curious.

Book Synopsis In and Out of School by : Roger White
Download or read book In and Out of School written by Roger White and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-01 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1978, reissued here with a new preface, this book describes a project based outside the school institution, but in co-operation with it, exploring methods and courses which might offer meaningful education for groups of fifth-form leavers. Though the project had been primarily concerned with developing a survival curriculum for the non-academic urban adolescent, the format of living, experiential teaching and learning it exemplifies would be appropriate to the education of children of all ages and abilities. The authors identified community resources and offer suggestions as to how these might be better employed. They show how education could be taken out of the classroom to extend ‘schooling’ beyond the schools, and in this context they point to the vast, untapped resources of both people and buildings outside the school walls which could profitably be incorporated within the existing learning framework. They show, also, how the training of ‘professionals’ – particularly trainee teachers and social workers – by involvement in such an experiment could constitute a fundamental preparation for their future roles. Finally, the authors urge for an extension of social policy with regard to education; an extension of provision which they argue could be achieved largely through the re-allocation of existing resources, such as had already demonstrably worked in the city of Bristol. The perspective throughout is ideological as well as practical, and the book is both a polemic and a procedural manual suggesting workable approaches and ideas, many of which are still relevant today
Book Synopsis Alevism as an Ethno-Religious Identity by : Celia Jenkins
Download or read book Alevism as an Ethno-Religious Identity written by Celia Jenkins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-23 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently the importance of religion in the modern world has often been underestimated in Western societies, whereas its significance is absolutely crucial in the Middle East. Religion is critical to a sense of belonging for communities and nations, and can be a force for unity or division. This is the case for the Alevis, an ethnic and religious community that constitutes approximately 20% of the Turkish population – its second largest religious group. In the current crisis in the Middle East, the heightened religious tensions between Sunnis, Shias and Alawites raise questions about who the Alevis are and where they stand in this conflict. With an ambiguous relationship to Islam, historically Alevis have been treated as a ‘suspect community’ in Turkey and recently, whilst distinct from Alawites, have sympathised with the Assad regime’s secular orientation. The chapters in this book analyse different aspects of Alevi identity in relation to religion, politics, culture, education and national identity, drawing on specialist research in the field. The approach is interdisciplinary and contributes to wider debates concerning ethnicity, religion, migration and trans/national identity within and across ethno-religious boundaries. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the National Identities journal.
