Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first detailed scholarly study of the late Victorian and Edwardian peace movement, the campaigns of which made a significant impact on political debate, especially during the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1), the Bulgarian Atrocities campaign (1876-8), Britain's conflict in Egypt (1882), the South African War (1899-1902), and the intensifying international crisis before 1914. The movement's activists included Richard Cobden, Herbert Spencer, Keir Hardie, J. A. Hobson, and Norman Angell. Among the first to benefit from the opening of the Peace Society Archive, the book focuses on the specialized associations at the heart of the peace movement. Paul Laity identifies the existence of different programmes for the achievement of a just, permanent peace, and offers a new interpretation of the reaction of peace campaigners to war in 1914. At the same time, his book makes an important and original contribution to the history of popular politics and political ideas in Britain.

This book was released on 2018-10-05 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is the first thorough analysis of the extent of the opposition to the Great War in Wales, and is the most extensive study of the anti-war movement in any part of Britain. It is, therefore, a significant contribution to our understanding of people’s responses to the conflict, and the difficulty of mobilising the population for total war. The anti-war movement in Wales and beyond developed quickly from the initial shock of the declaration of war, to the civil disobedience of anti-war activists and the industrial discontent excited by the Russian Revolution and experienced in areas such as the south Wales coalfield in 1917. The differing responses to the war within Wales are explored in this book, which charts how the pacifist tradition of nineteenth-century Welsh Nonconformity was quickly overturned. The two main elements of the anti-war movement are analysed in depth: the pacifist religious opposition, the Fellowship of Reconciliation, and the Nonconformist dissidents who were particularly influential in north and west Wales; and the political opposition concentrated in the Independent Labour Party and among the radical left within the South Wales Miners’ Federation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the contribution of modern Welsh literature to our understanding of peace and pacifism – an important and much overlooked subject in Welsh studies. Taking a literary-historical approach to the subject, it reveals how modern Welsh writing opens up history in ways in which historical discourse alone sometimes fails to do. It argues that the concepts of peace, peacefulness and pacifism have played a broader and more complex role in Welsh life than has been recognised, primarily through an influential Welsh-language pacifist intelligentsia. The author reminds us that Welsh pacifism is distinguished from English pacifism by the Welsh language itself, its links with Welsh nationalism and by the fact that it faced challenges and pressures never encountered by English pacifism. Authors discussed in this study include Tony Curtis, George M. Ll. Davies, Pennar Davies, John Eilian, Emyr Humphreys, Glyn Jones, D. Gwenallt Jones, T. Gwynn Jones, T. E. Nicholas, Iorwerth C. Peate, Angharad Price, Ned Thomas, Lily Tobas and Waldo Williams.

Book excerpt: In Britain, Wales has gained a reputation as a nation wedded to pacifism, but this view ignores the long history of Welsh involvement in armed conflict. The essays assembled in Wales and War examine the reactions of Welsh people to a series of conflicts from the Napoleonic Wars to the conflict in the Falklands. The impact of Britain's imperial economy on Welsh support for and participation in war, as well as the role played by geography, are among the range of illuminating topics considered in this collection. Featuring work from a new generation of historians, Wales and War is an innovative addition to our understanding of British history.

Book excerpt: This is the story of a Canadian woman who grew up in the Eastern Townships of Quebec during the late 1800s. Distressed by the outbreak of the Great War in 1914, she wrote a plan for continuous mediation that could have brought the fighting to a halt early on, but the diplomats and heads of state failed to consider it seriously. At the international Congress of Women in the Hague in 1915 she met Aletta Jacobs. Her conversations with European officials are surprising--and most revealing. All Canadians can take pride in Miss Wales ́ work for peace. It eventually led to the organization of the League of Nations and later, the United Nations, and the relatively peaceful years we have enjoyed since 1945.

Breaking Barriers, Shaping Worlds gathers scholars to explore the role of women in twentieth-century Canadian international affairs. They examine the lives and careers of professionals employed abroad as doctors, nurses, or economic development advisors; those fighting for change as anti-war, anti-nuclear, or Indigenous rights activists; and women working as diplomatic spouses or as diplomats themselves. This lively, wide-ranging collection reveals the vital contribution of women to the search for global order that has been a hallmark of Canada’s international history.

Book excerpt: Brock (history emeritus, U. of Toronto) presents peace activism as historically including two groups: those who reject war on grounds of conscience, and the internationalists who, without the same commitment of conscience, nonetheless strive to accomplish a warless world. He discusses the early Anglo-American peace movement and the dispute between its two principle groups, the 1838 pacifist radical abolitionists, pacifism during the Civil War, and Tolstoyism. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1970s, feminists urged us to "rethink" Canada by placing women's experiences at the centre of historical analysis. Forty years later, women's and gender historians continue to take up the challenge, not only to interrogate the idea of nation but also to place their work in a global perspective. This volume showcases the work of scholars who draw on critical race theory, postcolonial theory, and transnational history to re-examine familiar topics such as biography and oral history, paid and unpaid work, marriage and family, and women's political action. Taken together, these exciting new essays demonstrate the continued relevance of history informed by feminist perspectives.
